First off dont judge me or say anything rude because i hate talking about this to (anyone). And this may be a little long.

I have this disease Alopecia. Its where you lose your hair. Im not losing it right now but i have a few bald spots. And no its not any form of cancer and its not life threatning so i cannot die from it.

But every day i wear my hair up in a messy bun. Its getting kind of old really. Once in a while ill wear my hair down and put a little bit up. But once i get to school or work i put it up because i either get really hot. Or i just dont feel comforatable wearing it down because i hate when people question me about it.

The other day decided i want to have side bangs. I kind of had some but the bangs werent all the same leangth so i cut them the same length and it doesnt look right. i tried pinning them back but they wont stay.

Is there any cute hair styles i can wear with either my hair up or half down and half up? How can i make these side bangs look right?
---Also im 17 and i have had Alopecia for 9 years. So dont tell me to go to doctor and make sure its really Alopecia. ive have taken meds for it and nothing works.

thank you

also if you need a picture ill send you one just leave your Screenname in the answer.

it might help to be able to see pictures. as a kid I struggled with patchy hair loss that looked fine if I put it in pigtails. when I went completely bald I wore a wig just fine. for the most part, though, I just wore my hair how it was. Physical appearances have not meant much to me.

now then. you can get extensions put in around the spots that fill them in if they're tiny enough. you can also just get your hair cut creatively and pin it to fold over your spots. tiny plastic kiddie-style hairclips are really in and would work really well to do mini comb-overs. if you have long-ish hair you can get it permed and wear it messy with a fabric headband so that the spots don't show as much. it depends on your style and the amount of work you want to put in.

as for making side-bangs work, you need to cut them yourself or have a friend do it. most stylists won't do it just right. you also never want to cut them all the same length. it makes your hair look childish.

if all else fails, I know I would enjoy seeing someone completely comfortable with patchy hair loss. that's how I was for several years. it would be refreshing for me and a comforting to know that I'm not the only one (if I still had hair loss problems).

hi, well the other day i saw this video on how they kill animals for human consumtion, and i decided to turn vegetarian after seeing it. any tips for me on going about this? and are there any alternatives to meat?because i love my meat

you should ABSOLUTELY become vegetarian if you care about the animals. humans are actually natural HERBIVORES, not omnivores. we cannot get on without a generous supply of vegetables and fruits and grains and beans. I went vegetarian last may and vegan last august and it feels great.

now. tips. start off little. phase out your meats and replace them gradually with meat subs like boca and quorn and tofu (but I prefer not to use these in cooking so I can't give you product reviews). see how sustainable it is to live without meats before going vegan if you so decide to (and I suggest it). you should IMMEDIATELY begin looking into soymilk, especially the kind fortified with B12. even if you're just a lacto-ovo vegetarian, buy soymilk fortified with B12 for your breakfast cereals. this is a healthy decision for anyone. because of factory farming and current vegetable production, you cannot get B12 in sufficient quantities and live in the US. In other countries the veggies have B12 because of proper crop rotation.

as for the soybeans that "cut down the rainforest" that's not the case at all. Illinois is the largest supplier of soybeans in the US. I've personally been to a soybean farm and even met the soybean princess of Illinois (who I go to school with). I'm not seeing the rainforest in Illinois.

if you get down about not being able to eat like a "normal" teen, do a fun vegetarian thing. hang out with the local vegetarians, go to a food drive with live music, bake cookies. I personally bake cookies. I baked a lot of cookies when I first went vegan, but now I'm perfectly fine just living and enjoying life. I sometimes make a big pot of my favorite soup as well.

now! product reviews!

Amy's: I don't like the chili. not at all. I think it sucks. they do make frozen tv-dinner-like meals that are pretty good, though. the scrambled tofu is my absolute favorite. the shepherd's pie is also good and I ate tons and tons of the spinach pizza before going vegan.

Quorn: I had no idea this wasn't vegan when I bought it. it's a delicious substitute as chicken nuggets. but I don't plan on eating any more because milk products make me really sick.

boca: this is an only-at-restaurants thing for me. I really really really hate meat substitutes. restaurants frequently have this or morningstar farms brand around here. my parents like to think I'm happy to eat this stuff. I'm really not, but it's an adequate sub.

tofutti: better than cream cheese, soy ice cream, cheddar slices. the first two are awesome. I eat the ice cream nonstop. I hate the cheddar slices, though.

now then. my final tip is to always read labels, not just the allergy information. that's how I ended up with quorn that makes me sick to eat. I'm usually really good about it, though. I also have a list of animal-derived ingredients for your iPod if you're interested. drop one in my inbox.

If you wanna just skip all this and get to the question, Then look at the very bottom.

Okay, I really didn't know what category to put all this under, because it's a variety of issues I'm having, yet it basically all comes down to one thing, Self-esteem.
This might be long, so I'm sorry, in advance, if you get a little confused. But to me there is no way for me to make this any less complicated unless I type out the WHOLE thing.

I have a weight issue, and this is where it all started, In 8th grade. [I'm in 10th now] I've been chubby all my life..starting from 3rd grade, & I had been dancing up until 2 years ago. Well, getting to the main point.. I was 4'11 and weighed about 118, and I was really er..chubby. That was until 8th grade, I got taller..about 5'4, and weighed the same. When I had returned back to school, I had gotten lots of compliments on my appearance and that it looked like I had lost alot of weight. Which wasn't really the case, but it dawned on me that I liked hearing these compliments, [who doesn't?] and I wanted more, so I started going days without eating, and exercising. Now, Before that, My best friend since 4th grade, was practically my "sister". I was ALWAYS at her house whenever I had the chance, which was pretty much every weekend. We always hung out, but when I stopped eating I started losing interest in socializing, and about the middle of 8th grade, we didn't hang out as much..and we hardly talked. I was obsessed with wanting to lose weight, and I'd get upset and hurt myself if I ate that day or even gained weight. I've always been a quiet person, and this really didn't help. Now, I'm always worrying about my appearance, & I can't seem to make any new friends because I'm so worried about what they'll think of me, not to mention I've "reunited"? with my best friend from 4th grade, after us fighting because of some lame loser she was 'friends' with. I've lost most of the friends I've had from dance because I quit. I've told my mom I lost interest in dancing, But I didn't. I couldn't stand the fact that I looked fat in my costumes.

I don't mean to tell a story or anything, But the reason why I'm writing is, I can't take it anymore. My dad constantly puts me down, telling me I look fat, and that I'm ugly, and going through my clothes saying this-or-that is too small for me, then tries to throw it away.I'm tired of always feeling like crap about my appearance, and constantly worrying about if I look fat in my clothes. I probably go out in public once, maybe twice a year since then. My best friend is really tiny, she's about 5'5 and weighs 96 pounds, maybe. So I feel really self conscious when I'm around her. She's lost about 11 pounds in the past year or so. So I wonder maybe she has the same weight issue, too? Anyways, I've tried eating healthy, but everytime I eat I go into this breakdown. I can't say I've actually had a bf, maybe long distance..but that's about it. & I'm not saying I want a boyfriend, but lately I've been feeling like I'm missing out on being a teenager. I always see these girls talking and flirting with guys, and I get jealous. I want to be able to talk to a guy without wondering whether he thinks I look fat, or ugly. & of course everyone wonders about that stuff, and I'm positive people are in the same situation I'm in. I just want to know what I could possibly do to help me raise my self-esteem.
Please don't say anything like try talking to my parents about my feelings, or a school counselor, anybody like that.
I'd just like to know some ways that some of you increase your self-esteem. Like what gets rid of your stress, or some things you do that take your mind off things, anything around those areas..
Once again, sorry if this is long and confusing.

well.

I tap dance.

I just started last week, but it makes me really glad for thursday nights when I have lessons. and I'm not a stick-thin dancer. every time I think of myself as "fat" I think, "I'm a little chunky, and that's okay. I'm still beautiful." now then. I don't plan on dancing in the recitals so I don't plan on ever wearing a silly dance costume (and if I did, I'd end up making it on my own because that's what I do best). if I get stressed out doing something I just get away from it and listen to some tap dancing or sew in my sewing room. or I doodle or go through antique buttons. I realize that what I'm going through is not something exactly unique and I write it all out and later write a poem based on it. and then I go to slams and people relate to what I go through which really helped me get through my grandpa dying.

I accept that I'm not unique at all and I use my averageness to tell other people that they're exactly the same as any other kid in the world today and that everyone's got some sort of hang-up makes everyone feel a little bit better.

so, just do what you see as your best thing that you feel like you could do for days. make sound effect tapes, play the tamborine, count pennies, bake bread, play with dolls, take a day off to plant trees or bury little rocks and pretend like they're magical trees. be utterly five years old and don't let anyone stop you from doing it because they're just mad that they can't be comfortable enough to do it, too.

Okay know this may be weird but can anyone please tell me if there is any difference between european clothing sizes and american pants sizes because i really don't get it! I am going over seas next summer and I want to go shopping there-thanks!

you're best off using a tape measure while you're in the states. the pants sizes here mean pretty much nothing unlike in europe. sizes not only fluctuate between brands, but even within stores. right now I'm wearing a size 8. but I have some size 4s that fit and a size 12 that's too small. all made by the gap over the last year.

Hey everyone. My world history teacher wants to go to italy for spring break (first 2 weeks of april...yes...we get 2 weeks off) and he wants only about 5 or 6 students to go with him. Well he's obviously got a long time to plan and we'll get more information later...but right now he estimated the trip (for 9 days) to be about $2,500..not too bad right? WRONG if you live in my family! we are in a horrible money situation right now and certainly cant afford it. Heck, I dont think we can afford it when spring break rolls around..so i need a way to make money..enough money to go to italy for spring break. please dont tell me to get a job because i've already considered that and no one (besides mcdonalds) will hire at 15 around here and i'm not about to work at mcdonalds...and even if i did put in for a job...there is no promise i'll get it. So how on earth am i going to make money?? I dont like the basic idea of making and selling food because there is no point in doing it in my neighborhood. So can someone PLEASE help a sister out? I WOULD LOOOOOVE to go to italy! I'm only $2500 away! :) Thanks In Advance To Anyone Who Helps!

well. if we're at the same school, you're not going to be picked to go on the trip. he's taking seniors and a few juniors.

if we're not going to the same school, you should really consider a job. I have to put up over half in order for my parents to allow me to go. my grandfather is paying for the rest. and I'll probably work all of winter break. if you don't end up going this year, there's always the next time he goes. I wasn't able to go to the UK with my world history teacher freshmen year because I was a freshmen and not doing A work in his class. Now I'm in AP World and I'm already on the list to go to spain. things like this come around multiple times. trust me.

What is that website you can go to to find out if a rumor going around in emails is true or not?

indeed. often plugging in a few random words in the search box at snopes.com (the urban legend internet database) you can find out if your email is real or not. basically, most of them are fake.

i have a problem with my weight. my mother works from 3pm-11pm, so that leaves dinner up to my dad. My dad can't cook. He can only barbeque, and make chicken cutlets...and pasta. So every night we either have something barbequed [like hamburgers, hot dogs, etc.] or pizza or fast food. I have high cholesteral and I'm supposed to be trying to get it down since it's very high, but I can't do it with the way my dad "cooks". I do have a treadmill and I try to run a mile whenever I can fit in, but I do have school and other activities so it's hard to exercise everyday. What could I do to help bring down my cholesteral and lose some weight [or gain some muscle, either way] when I have to eat this food? I'm 13 by the way, so I can't exactly cook myself.

you're 13. you can absolutely certainly cook completely for youself. As a clutzy 16-year-old who had never cooked ever I started cooking for myself. every single meal. I'd venture to say that you can cook anything you can put your mind to with simple simple materials. as for lowering your cholesterol, you can virtually reverse it (especially at young ages) by eating a vegan diet. no meat. no cheese. no milk. no ice cream (unless it's tofutti!). no cruelty. I live vegan and I love living. the book The Everyday Vegan is chock-full of delicious, one-pot recipes that are easy for teens and busy adults to make. then, by switching from white to whole wheat flour and brown rice you'll lose weight and feel healthier. there's no way, however, that you're going to lose weight or lower your cholesterol eating meat-based meals.

I live in a one storey house. My family sleeps late and wakes up early. That's bad and I don't wanna have that kind of lifestyle. So whenever I try to sleep early, my parents(who arent asleep yet) will be watching tv and talking rather loudly. And when I try to sleep after all of them have slept, I'd be unable to sleep till late morning cos they'd all be up already. The sound of my dad's car driving off and the clanging of the pots and pans in the kitchen by my mum wakes me up in no time.

I feel really very frustrated. I told them to please keep it down. They'd try to be quiet for a few days but then their old habits kick in again after some time. So when I told them to keep it down again, they told me that I'm spoilt and told me to deal with it.

My eye bags are like so darn obvious and I feel so damn frustrated at being unable to sleep.

I've tried to not sleep for a whole day so that I'd be sleepy enough to sleep the whole day but it didnt work out. Its the noise that my family makes that keeps me up almost all night. I get only like 6 hr plus of sleep and tt's definitely not enough!

I used to be a heavy sleeper but I dun know why I've become such a light sleeper and that sucks. So now, I feel so paranoid to the extent that I dont dare to sleep for fear that my family members will wake me up with their noisiness.

THere's no point telling them to keep it down cos they'd just go back to their own habits again.

I'm desperate for a good night's sleep. Someone please help me. Tell me how to shut out their noisiness and be able to sleep like a dead man.

therapists often use white noise machines to calm their patients. they remove all excess sound by covering it with "white noise", noise we can't normally hear that blocks out all other sound. I have no idea where to buy one, but I can say that they exist. there's also the music and headphones approach. This is the one I used when my parents were loud because I didn't have a white noise machine. usually, the headphones fall out of my ears before the night is through (and I am a heavy sleeper when I get going) so I can hear my alarm clock.

i have a problem with eating.
like i will eat breakfast and i'll have like a bagel and orange juice but then im like constantly hungry. it's gross. is there anything i can do or certain lowfat things i can eat to make me less hungry. im 13 btw. and i weigh 140 pounds. and i am 5'6" is that too much?

HELP!

you need to eat better breakfast. bagels are not very good unless they're whole grain. you might want to try cereal with fruit or toast with fruit. oatmeal is also good. just be sure to cut back your sugar.

idk if this is the right category but its similar. okay well i got new shoes and i have really bad blisters from them but they go good with this outfit im wearing to school tomorrow and they are the only shoes i have that would match so wearing different shoes wont help & they are flats so i can't wear socks. i tried putting band-aids on them but they just fall off. so what can i put on my blisters so they wont hurt as bad tomorrow?

it really depends on the exact style of shoe. sometimes you can get away with nylons or foot undies made for dancers. it also depends on where your blisters are. I usually get one blister on the 4th toe on my right foot, so I can get away with wearing bandaids. you probably have typical blisters in typical places (like the back of your foot). flesh-toned tape works well on the inside of your shoe or moleskin taped to your foot. for AVOIDING blisters (in the future), break in your shoes by wearing a thick pair of wool socks with them for the first day or so. you'll protect your foot from blisters and widen your shoes just enough that your feet won't sit really close the edges.

your very best bet, of course, is to wear a different outfit with different shoes (and socks with bandaids on all of your blisters) tomorrow and wear your new outfit some other day.

well they say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. its always hard to make up my mind on what to eat before school.

and i'm asking if anyone knowns some quick healthy breakfasts that i could at least eat every other day. or what foods i could alternate with. thanx for the advice.

puffins! it's like the best cereal ever! they're all-natural corn puffs in various flavors (peanut butter is the only one I eat). I eat them with fortified soymilk. I'll eat a piece of fruit or a clif bar (or just more cereal) about two hours later when I'm at school. it works out really well for me.

Is lipgloss, lipliner, eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara, foundation, and concealer too much for a 10th grader?

I haven't seen other girls wear this much makeup.

Is this too much makeup for my age? [15]

It's not caked on or anything... I'm just wanting your opinion.

I don't wear that much make-up even when I'm onstage in a show. once I covered my face completely in glitter, but for normal people I wear foundation, eyeliner, lipstick, fake eyelashes, and eyebrow thickener on my eyebrows (if it's in-the-round I wear less). offstage I wear no non-natural make-up (and if I do wear any it's like beet juice mixed with lotion). I'm seventeen. what you described is definitely too much for me.

Hey iam 17 female and iam thinking about becoming a vegetarian and I was wondering what kind of foods are out there for vegetarians besides vege's.

everything.

your best bet is to get a vegan/vegetarian cookbook and join up a couple of vegan/vegetarian forums. my favorite foods are falafel, minnestrone, vegetable stir fry, black bean soup, and boca burgers (even though I had never had an actual hamburger until I became vegan). I eat a lot of hummus and pita bread and PB and J at school. and I eat a whole bunch of spinach. you just have to test around to see how the new food is. my favorite cookbook is vegan with a vengeance.

can you only use soft bananas for banana bread? also, is there a way to make it without a boxed banana bread mix? approximately how many bananas do you need to make one? thank you :)

traditionally, bananas are used as egg substitutes in vegan baking. it's about 1/2 of a banana to each egg for an intense flavor and 1/4 or 1/3 for a lower flavor. so basically you could just take a regular bread recipe and switch out the eggs with bananas. try googling for banana bread recipes. also, it's possible to make cookies and muffins and everything taste exactly like banana bread by switching out the eggs for bananas.

I wasn't sure what catagory to put this under. My 8 year old daughter has gotten bubble gum stuck in her beautiful long hair. What can we do to get it out without having to cut any of her pretty locks? Thanks!

try freezing the section of hair with an ice pack or ice cube then using peanut butter. it's easier than peanut butter alone and less messy because you're not combining straight gum with mushy peanut butter.

I've been looking around for homecoming dresses with thicker straps, but I'm having a hard time. They don't have to be really wide, I would just like to be able to wear a regular bra underneath it. Strapless bras are always a pain because you have to keep pulling them up and even with underwire, they hardly support anything. Does anyone know where I might be able to find a dress with thicker straps? Thanks a lot!!!

buy a dress that you really like. put on the bra you want to wear with it. go to a tailor. any tailor worth his/her skin can find a coordinating fabric and add straps to any dress. it's a minor minor tailoring. you can also have a dress tailored to have enough support and be really comfortable without a bra. this one is a little more intrusive and difficult. it would probably be more comfortable in the long run, but more expensive.

Hey my name is Rachel and iam 17 years old and i've been really depressed about my weight lately and my self-esteem has really been going down and my blood pressure has been going up to like 152/102 and my doctor says that's really high for a 17 years old and he looked scared and that really scared me that my doctor looked scared so i've been eating alot less than I use to.I use to weigh 149 and now I weigh about 105 and iam 5foot and I got so use to my lowcarb diet I decided to stick to it and excersize regularly, but my mom seems really worried and so do my friends and my other family they say when iam only 105 I don't need to diet i've been seeing my school counsler and she tells me to do what I feel is right, but at this point I don't know what is right. Is this anorexia?

you have high blood pressure, so you went on a low-carb diet?

what the hell?

high blood pressure. low cholesterol diet. plant-based. carbohydrates are your friend. they will not cause you to gain weight. eliminate animal-related products to lower your cholesterol. no meat. no milk. no eggs. no cheese. these foods have cholesterol which gums your veins. ta da. high blood pressure. a low-carb diet will only cause it to get worse and make you more sickly.

if it's not anorexia, it is just plain stupid.

I need more fiber. Any suggestions for meals? I want something that has fiber in every meal [3] I have.

Is there any cereals that have a lot of whole grain and less sugar? I can't really go into the store and take my time to look..

I can't have beans** that last time I did, i threw up [i dont know why] i can't digest them?

So any recipes? Anything good with fruits? :]

Any help is wanted!

beans. brown rice. whole grain, low sugar cereals.

if you're young, you should have no trouble with one fiber-heavy meal and low meat in all of the rest. beans are a great way to do this if they're not refried in oil or baked with bits of pork. hi, america, those aren't the only way to eat beans. as for your body "not being able to digest them" that doesn't make sense. if you couldn't digest beans you wouldn't be able to digest anything. beans are possibly the easiest foods to digest. you were probably sick that day.

oh, and wake up, you have to start reading labels in the store.
