So, like, I'm this guy. And like, I do stuff...

Chemist, musician, artist, programmer, coach, husband, dad, uncle, etc.

So yeah.

Advice-wise? There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

I have to drink coffee every day to survive. I don't drink a ton of it, probably two cups a day in the morning. My friends and I used to have a day we'd call "detox thursday" where we wouldn't drink coffee all day, but I was starting to hate detox thursdays because I felt tired and grumpy all day so I quit doing it with them. Does this mean I'm addicted? Is coffee really that bad for me? It's way better than soda, right? (link)
Coffee better than soda? How? They are both fairly awful for you.

Yes, you are addicted to caffiene. Believe it or not, you'll have more energy if you drink less caffiene. Try drinking water instead.

Why do you like Turc's butt? (link)
What is there not to like?

Such a silly question.

I'm out of toothpaste. Is it socially acceptable to use ground up Mentos as a tooth-care substitute? (link)
Eat a non-pulpy apple, then follow with a glass of water. Chew on a sprig of mint to freshen breath.

I'm not kidding.

What happens if you put this side up face down while popping microwave popcorn? (link)
The side that needs to be "down" has a small amount of metal in it, which is used to reflect the microwaves right back into the unpopped kernels. Many microwavable foods used metallized films to assist in cooking the food faster.

If the metallized layer is on the top, the popcorn will probalby never acutally pop, and you'll only damage the microwave, and possibly set the bag on fire.

I'm an athiest, but i don't try to force people to believe what I believe. I don't challenge other people's beliefs. I've had this one guy bother me for 5 years about being an athiest. (I go to a PK-12 school distict). He's always asking me why I'm not religious, why I don't believe in God, etc, ect, and so on. i've done everything I can think of, including inflicting bodily harm on him (well - I dropped a book on his head. But I don't even think that hurt him) but he won't stop. how do I stop him? (link)
make up something, like, "I gave up religion for Lent" or start telling him about the Norse pantheon in excruciating detail.

How do you get blood off the walls and carpet because I spilled alot of it while killi*cough* I mean choping up meat and it was all bloody and now everything else is all bloody too. (link)
Fire.

Lots and lots of fire.

I'm a volleyball player - does anyone know good excercises to work on my jump? (link)
Hi. I coach volleyball.

Simplest way, without buying overpriced equipment:

Get either a big block of wood or some sort of platform you can stand on. Get some bungee cords.

Attach the bungee cords to the blocks of wood. Have the length of the cords be short enough that they must be fully stretched for you to hold them while standing. Either hold the bungee cords, or attach them to your waist. Squat down and stand up a whole lot. You are now building leg strength for jumping.

Practice your approach at the net a lot. Work on foot placement, the steps you take in the actual approach, angle of approach, and pay particular attention to your arms and how you swing them to help you build momentum as you jump. Many players worry too much about hitting the ball, and not enough on how they even get to that point.

There are many, many ways to strenthen your legs, and it looked like others have already suggested lots of good stuff. The USAV site would definitely be a good reference. Off the top of my head, I know we have the book "Pass, Set, CRUSH!", and a book by Karch Kiraly, which is really, really good, but mostly for setters.

What is the sequence for orbital filling? I've been given a sheet that seems to have missed out 4p and I am subsequently completly confused. It's a homework sheet that is due in on Monday so I need the help quite soon.

p.s. I'm taking you on your word about the whole chemist thing. (link)
In general, we're talking s, p, d, f

Since you mention 4p, and row 4 is the first time you get d orbitals from the transition metals, I'm assuming that you have Argon as Ne:3s2,3p6.

So, if you start with Potassium, you add your 4s electrons... then you move into the 3d stuff, then you get back into the 4p electrons with Gallium

Row 5 is the same deal, 5s, then 4d, then 5p's...

Row 6 all hell lets loose with the Lanthanide series, where the f orbitals rear their ugly heads. Lanthanum is Xe:5d1,6s2, then the next element, being Cerium, is Xe:5d1,5f1,6s2

Hopefully this helps and makes sense... if not, let me know.

At least you weren't asking about orbital hybridization for organic bonding and all that... sp2 hybrids... yay!

p.s. If I were to lie about a career, wouldn't you think I'd pick something a little more glamourous than "chemist"?

Okay, I'm a high school student who is on her eighth year of band, the clarinet specifically, and I want to major in music. I have this year and next until college, and I really want to go to one school, but it's an elite school that very few people make it in to. The school is Julliard. My question is, do you think that it's possible for me to make it in even if I'm not one of the world's most amazing musicians? Oh, I also wanted to ask what instrument you play.

Slán go fóill,
Clarinet Girl Lyss (link)
First off, the easy part: I play saxophones, bass guitar, some guitar, flute, keyboards, and I sing. I also write and arrange in several different styles / genres.

Julliard. The school is freakin' impressive, with the massive amounts of talent that come in and out of it. Sadly, I really have no clue how hard it is to get into it. Nearby where I live is the University of Cincinnati's College Conservatory of Music, which is in itself an internationally recognised and rather prestigious music school. I can tell you that I could have gotten into it had I chosen that path. Perhaps not with a full-ride scholarship, but I would have been accepted into their music program. But Julliard? No clue.

I know the graduate programs at CCM are more difficult to get into... they have waiting lists for people who apply and audition for those spots.

I know a couple people who might have better insight into your question than I. I'll be sure to ask them their thoughts on the matter (one of which is my next door neighbor, but she should be having her baby any second now...) I'll follow up again hopefully in a few more days with what I'm able to find out.

Just wondering...

What's a good software program to use to learn Spanish. I have Windows 2000 and Linux so nothing Mac! Thanks in advance for suggestions! (link)
Go to Spain and live there. Or Mexico. Or Argentina, Bolivia, Belize, Honduras, Guatamala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Venezuela, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Panama, Cuba, Nicaragua, Paraguay, or Uruguay.

Most of the software I've used for languages suck. None of them really get the job done well. It just doesn't work. You need to actively speak the language with people as well as learn vocabulary and grammar. And learning about the customs of the people who speak the language also helps immensely.

I have looked 3 different programs for Spanish, one for Latin, and one for Chinese. They were all sub-par. Sure, they'll help, but you won't really learn the language.

How do I get kids to show up for debate practice, or to take chess practice more seriously?

Chess isn't all fun and games if you want to get good. And it's frustrating to go to tournaments and lose all the time, so I'd think they'd want to get better. Study. Too much like schoolwork.

At least they're showing up for chess practice. I'm getting almost nobody to debate practice. And this was their idea, too.
(link)
If they aren't showing up to practice, I have to ask, why do you continue to keep trying?

When a team falls apart for whatever reason, sometimes it is best to just wash your hands of it and see if it works out better next year.

Sometimes, it takes folding a team to drive the message home to those involved that they really need to put some effort intot it. Remind people that if they make a commitment to a team, well... it is a commitment. And failing their commitment is failing the team, which only shows a lack of dedication and responsibility.

Should I get another job and move to another city now, or will my current job get better soon? (link)
All jobs suck, thus it matters not.

You are doomed no matter where you go.

why does god hate me?
(link)
because you suck?

because you are an evil person?

because a gypsy curse has been placed upon you?

There are many reasons, but really, I will be blunt and say that if you are really being serious with this question, that you have some issues that lie outside the realm of things spiritual and are looking to place blame for things that have happened in your life. And since owning up to your own failures is oft too diffucult for many people, the find blaming God an easy way out.

I'm 20 years old and I still live with my parents while I'm in school. They are driving me crazy. I want to get out but I can't afford to so I'm stuck in this situation. Anyway, my birthday is coming up and they're throwing this huge party that I don't want. They already sent out the invitations, so I can't get out of it. Is it wrong to fake an illness so I can stay the entire night in my room? (link)
Umm... I would hope being that you're about to be 21 that you could actually talk to your parents and suggest that perhaps this party is a bad idea.

Being that the invitations are already sent, you missed your chance. Right now, I'd say that since you're living under their roof still, that you should just suck it up and deal with it. And next time, assuming there is one, that you are more able to express yourself to them... they are your family, afterall, and you are basically "all growed up" now.

I met a guy in a chat room....We have a lot in common and a lot of the same interests. I am 15 and he is 37...he looks way younger. I have been hanging out with him after school and at the mall. I want to date him. I am very attracted to him and he is SO nice and sweet to me. He takes me to lunch, etc. Should I get involved with him even though we have a huge age difference? I don't think it makes a difference. (link)
I'll be blunt:

GOOD GOD NO! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU THINKING?

Lately I developed a liking towards a guy friend in my dorm. Every time it was just the two of us together, or just the two of us and perhaps one other close friend, he would act very solicitous towards me--he would do small things such as put his arm around my shoulder, hold my books for me, etc. I have also had many wonderful conversations with him in his room and elsewhere. So I was hopeful until this week, when I found out that he has asked another girl to a date event and has feelings towards her. Now I wonder if he felt something towards me but was discouraged by my inaptitude in flirting--I have difficulty playing that whole game of hinting and whatnot. It's a foreign language to me. (link)
Well, don't give up on him. Be patient and see what happens... likewise, don't throw in your hand and attempt to hang your fate on one guy.

If you babysit four little kids by yourself for three hours, around how much should you be getting paid? (link)
Depends on the rates that others in your area charge, the ages of the kids, and how experienced you are.

For little babies, asking for a bit more is often ok, because changing massively poopy diapers sucks.

Also, don't always think in terms of $$$/hour/kid. Often, flat-rates can be better. And sometimes, the people you are babysitting for will offer you more than you were going to ask.

which church is the best church 2 go 2? how do i pick a church thats rite 4 me? (link)

I so want to travel to atypical countries for vacation. I'd rather go to India than France or England, Africa than Cancun, Cambodia than Japan, the Philipines than Australia.

Any suggestions? Where would a good place to go be? What might I need to be aware of before I go to such places? (link)
If you're really into action and adventure, might I suggest lovely and scenic Liberia? Also, Bolivia and Venezuela are quite exciting right now. Why, both La Paz and Caracas are chock full 'o adventure and surprises around every turn. And by all means, do not overlook the Phillipines. A good friend of mine got to witness his cousins go beat up squatters in the family warehouses... great fun.

Remember, renting cars in these places can be risky, as there is the chance that your car will be blown up by whatever faction is fighting that particular day.
