Chemistry- electron formation.

Question Posted Saturday October 18 2003, 5:51 am

What is the sequence for orbital filling? I've been given a sheet that seems to have missed out 4p and I am subsequently completly confused. It's a homework sheet that is due in on Monday so I need the help quite soon.

p.s. I'm taking you on your word about the whole chemist thing.

In general, we're talking s, p, d, f

Since you mention 4p, and row 4 is the first time you get d orbitals from the transition metals, I'm assuming that you have Argon as Ne:3s2,3p6.

So, if you start with Potassium, you add your 4s electrons... then you move into the 3d stuff, then you get back into the 4p electrons with Gallium

Row 5 is the same deal, 5s, then 4d, then 5p's...

Row 6 all hell lets loose with the Lanthanide series, where the f orbitals rear their ugly heads. Lanthanum is Xe:5d1,6s2, then the next element, being Cerium, is Xe:5d1,5f1,6s2

Hopefully this helps and makes sense... if not, let me know.

At least you weren't asking about orbital hybridization for organic bonding and all that... sp2 hybrids... yay!

p.s. If I were to lie about a career, wouldn't you think I'd pick something a little more glamourous than "chemist"?
