What is music without harmony? Verily it is not music. Life without goodwill and fraternity - what is it? Indeed it is not life. He has not truly lived who has not lived for others, in sympathy and in harmony with his fellows.

Hey, I was wondering if there are any leg work-outs I can do to lose mass around my upper leg area. I have a bike and I go bike riding, I walk a lot but I'm usually in the house during the summer. Don't suggest walking or jogging because I don't like to do that kind of stuff alone and a lot of my friends are busy this summer. I have a pool, so if you know of any good exercises I can do in the pool that would help me lose a lot of the weight in that area by the time school starts, that'd be great. Thanks : ) (link)
When you say you want to lose mass around your upper leg, do you mean lose fat mass or muscle mass? Or both? There are many exercises you can do and dietary changes you can make to lose fat, but you can do nothing to control from where that fat comes. A lifestyle with high-endurance, low-power exercise can result in leaner muscles. Feel free to ask me for more detailed information if you can give me more details as to your personal goals.

How important do you think ratings are? I have asked questions, and try to go back and rate all the answers. However, I notice that a lot of people do not give ratings. It seems like it should be a common courtesy when someone gives a detailed well thought out answer.

Also have you noticed that the ratings now show up next to the answers? I haven't found this to be true of all my answers that were rated, but at least some of them.

I am new to this site, but I think ratings are a flaw to this system. I have not yet asked a question of my own, but I probably would rate any answers given out of courtesy. However, I think some people may grow to enjoy this feedback a bit too much and come to a point where their motivation to answer questions lies in receiving positive feedback rather than helping others.

Hi, I keep getting notices in my email that say there is a question in my inbox, or someone answered my questions, and when I come to the advicenators site, it also says that I do have questions and answers waiting for me. But then I check it and there's nothing there, even though it says that there's "Inbox (1)" or something like that.

What's going on? Just a glitch or something?

Thanks! (link)

This question is directed toward all you christian colunists. I'm planning to get a tattoo soon and I'd like to get the opinion of other christians. So if you are a christian, I'd like to know how you feel about tattoos. (link)
I am a Christian and, unlike some other Christians who have answered your question, I have never felt or been led to believe that getting a tattoo is a sin or is a way of rejcting the way God made you. A previous responder to your question brought up a Catholic belief that "[getting a tatoo] says to God 'you did not make me perfect.'" I feel this is bad advice and a very warped point of view because God DID NOT make us perfect. Getting a tattoo IS life-changing because it is a (more or less) permanent mark on your body.

My advice is to you is to not let the fact that you are a Christian dissuade you from getting a tattoo. However, be sure that the tattoo you get is truly meaningful and is something that you will enjoy in a few decades as much as you will when you first get it.

i want to get a job in the summer but i dont have any job experience want can i do? (link)
Livestrong has good ideas. Also, remember that a very large percentage of today's jobs are acquired not through the application process, but through networking. Ask your friends and family if anyone they know is looking to hire someone.

What are some easy dishes to make that doesn't really include specific amounts of ingredients? For example, chicken noodle soup? I can't think of anything right now. Well, thanks a lot! (link)
Try to think of combinations of simple foods, such as a classic frozen chicken breasts (just microwave), instant mashed potatoes (very easy to make) and a frozen vegetable. On dish I've always liked is "souper rice." It's a terrible pun, but a good dish. Simply prepare a can of Campbell's soup (with milk, not water) (chicken soup is good for this, as is mushroom), and instead of bringing it to slightly hot, let it begin to boil. Once the soup is boiling, add a soup can-full of white Minute Rice. Stir it up, take it off heat, cover, and let sit for about 20 minutes. If you make that dish first, wait a bit, and then make frozen chicken or another easy main dish, you have a good meal.

Is it out of line to correct somebody who you know is wrong in your answer? For example, say the question is "should I keep my pony?" and another person replies "no because a pony is a baby horse so you won't go as far on him", is it out of line to say "Actually, a pony is just a horse who is under 14.2 hh" blah, blah, blah? (link)
I share this problem. While I can't stand the spread of misinformation, no matter how innocent or unimportant, I also must remind myself to consider the context of each situation and make decisions accordingly. It is difficult to be the bearer of much knowledge with a desire to share it without being labeled a "know-it-all." All you can do is try to limit your correcting of other people to appropriate situations.

my best friend is scared of the dark. i can't get to sleep when i spend the night at her house because she keeps all the lights on in her room and i just cant fall asleep. so when she hits the hay... i quietly go to the light switch and turn the lights off. as soon as i do that she wakes up and starts crying! what to do???
thanks in advance

I think there are two things you can do. The first, and most important, is to talk to your friend about this fear and try to help her work through it. Second, as a temporary fix, you can buy a sleep mask.

how can i get motivated to excercise on rainy days? I do not have any excersize equiptment in my house, and on sunny days i like to go for a jog, a walk, or bike ride. On rainy days however, I am either too lazy, or don't know how to excersize indoors. Any suggestions? (link)
As corny as it sounds, seeking out an exercise video to work out with indoors will probably help. Anything from generic aerobics to Pilates will do you some good. I'd recommend shopping around and finding what sorts of indoor exercises fit you and your personal goals. As far as motivation to exercise in the rain, try investing in workout clothes that are designed for bad weather. You may end up enjoying the rainy day jog if you like the clothes you're wearing.

OKay so I was with my boyfriend and his friend the other day and they were talking about something and they said "I don't want no C B". I didn't want to sound dumb so I just ignored it. But now its bugging me and I want to know what it means! I know its something that has to do with something sexual. Please tell me if you know! Thanks soooooo much! (link)
The previous answers from others are probably what your boyfriend was referring to. In the future, a great resource you can use is http://www.urbandictionary.com

Well, It's really not at the forefront of my mind right now, Byzantine history is, but I am debating my religious beleifs from time to time. I am floating somewhere between a Deist, an Agnostic and an Atheist. Something that doesn't have some sort of personality cult at its center. I enjoy other peoples' opinions on subjects like this. I can handle being preached to if it's something that you believe, but what I most want is something well-reasoned. I would like it if some people who sport some religious affiliation to tell me why theirs makes sense and why that is something someone like myself should believe. Thanks for your participation - I hope the rest of your day is a blast! (link)
I, too, have been questioning aspects of my faith. I was raised Episcopalian, although with much more conservative beliefs than those to which our national church currently subscribe. Above all the denominational clutter and nonsense, I am a Christian. Bringing it down a few steps, I believe in God in the traditional Judeo-Christian sense. Your choice between Deist, Agnostic, and Atheist will probably be the easiest choice you make, especially if you choose Deist. Because that's where you are right now, I'm not going to bother even getting into Christianity, but rather just the fact that I believe in God.

Some people see science as a way of disproving God. Evolution, for example. There are those who take the Bible far to literally and use that ignorance on both sides of a futile arguement. One side says "Look! We have evidence of Evolution. The Bible says God zapped us into existence from nothing, but science tells us that we evolved from apes." Answering, the other side says "I didn't evolve from a monkey! God made us men to begin with." It seems to me that people ignore the possibility that when, on whatever "day" God created man, that "day" probably represents thousands, if not millions of years. More importantly, they don't consider that God may have used evolution to create man. What engineer simply builds something based on one design? Designs evolve and change to accomodate variables. The idea of intelligent design is one of core ideas that kept me believing in God.

More important than any idealogical argument, however, is the fact that humans are arrogant. The very idea that we, completely flawed beings with such limited understanding of our own existence, let alone the universe, think we know anything about God. In my church, there is the often-ignored concept of a "Holy mystery." That mystery being something that no human can understand or explain, but we continue to believe because of our faith.

I've probably rambled on enough at this point. I hope I've given you some ideas to think about. Feel free to contact me to inquire and discuss further.

Does anyone know of any good bands/song I can put on my iPOD? I'm getting tired of all the bands I have. I'm mostly into indie/rock/acoustic/some ska/oldies.

I like Death Cab, The Postal Service, The Audition, The Higher, Panic!, Further Seems Forever, Dashboard Confessional, Hidden in Plain View, Taking Back Sunday etc. Preferably bands that you know and that aren't on the radio. (link)
I have recently been very impressed by Dream Theater (rock/metal/fantastic music). If you're into ska, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones have a very unique ska-core sound and also touch many other genres in their albums. Other ska favorites are Reel Big Fish, The Forces of Evil, Less Than Jake, The Toasters, The Aquabats and Voodoo Glow Skulls. Also, I recently stumbled upon a band by name of "Dragonforce" on MySapce. Also very impressive.

I am a couch potato of 16 and have been since I was 11. Thanks in advance if you have any idea on how I can get in shape. Is there a plan I can follow, like walk 30 minutes for two weeks before starting to jog or? (link)
It seems to me that you already have the right idea - Progression. Hopefully you're already avoiding the ever-so-common mistake of jumping into high-intensity exercise with no preparation. In order to help you devise a specific plan, I would need to know what your goals are. I encourage you to post again with more details on your personal goals. For instance, what do you consider "in shape" to be? Are you looking for health benefits, a certain look, sports performance, or any combination thereof?

does anyone know any stomach exercises that will make your stomach skinnier? i need it to be by friday if possible. do curl-ups work? or what besides cur-ups? thanks. (link)
LoveToLaugh37 is correct in that you will likely not see any results by Friday regardless of what you do. On thing you should understand right away is that there is absolutely no way to target certain spots on the body for fat loss. To lose fat in one area, you have to lose fat period. For fat loss, sensible eating habits and regular cardiovascular exercise are the best things you can do. For toning your stomach area to give it a more aesthetic look, there are a variety of exercises you can do. In my experience, Pilates is a fantastic way to strengthn your "core" muscles, and often results in the kind of look you're currently after. Classic sit-ups and crunches are always effective, especially if performed with lateral motion as well as upward motion to stimulate use of the obliques. Again, you are unlikely to see any detectable results by Friday, but starting now will definitely help you in the long run.

I know this may sound evil, but seriously, how do you get your family member to stop smoking in a sneaky way if they are mad at you for asking all the time and are adamant in their opinions? Are there, like pills I can trick her with and pretend they're vitamins? (link)
Sadly, there is no miracle pill to make one stop smoking. Any "tricking" you may do might cross some ethical lines, but it's just one more situation of do the ends justify the means? You may wish to investigate the possibility of associating smoking with something unpleasant. Whatever negative stimulus you choose to associate with your relative's smoking would have to be quite potent in order to break such a powerful addiction. Reading up on basic psychology might give you some ideas to help you, should you choose to try anything "tricky."

OK, well, my two best friends will call me out if they think I'm "flirting" with a guy. It doesn't even matter what guy, they will just give me a look and act all mad. They don't even like the guy, since they both have boyfriends. But the problem is that our ideas of flirting are WAY different. Like, they think that striking a conversation up with an ex or playing soccer with a good guy friend is flirting, but I say not really. I need help! I need to know what to do? Should I laugh it off, or just not talk to my guy friends?
(link)
You might try asking them why they care if you flirt. Ask them if they perceive you as being overly flirtatious, or if they are just jealous because they don't have your attention. Granted, they will not likely respond with much honesty, but you can learn much from the way they answer rather than what they actually say. Above all else, tell them that you don't care if they think you're flirting or, if you are flirting, agree that you are flirting and show that you don't care.

Hey I have chicken legs!!! =P
Well yea and I want to know if there is anyway to make them fatter without making my tummy fatter. I lub the rest of my body except my legs. And I really dont want muscular legs, i want to have a little fat around them before any muscle. =/ (link)
Xomegaroni is correct; there is nothing you can do to decide or control where and how your fat is distributed. Performing exercises that strengthen your legs is the one thing that you can do, and doing so does not mean you will end up with overly muscular legs. Low weight, high repetition resistance training will likely add some mass your legs, but will not result in any kind of body-builder look. If you have the time, try exploring the website http://www.exrx.net

what is a GREAT exercize that i can do so my stomach isnt fat and doesnt bulge out of my shirts? (link)
Contrary to popular myths, there is no way to target a certain area of your body for fat loss. To lose fat in one area, you need to lose fat period. At the risk of sounding terribly generic, the "eat right and exercise" cliche is the best thing you can do. For the exercise part of the equation, moderate to high intensity cardiovascular exercise is the best thing you can do. Activities that fall into this category are jogging, running, bicycling, swimming (laps, typically), many forms of aerobics, and the list goes on. A good way to lose fat with minimal effort is to curb your current diet a bit (without going overboard and obsessing) and taking walks daily. Walk for 20-30 minutes when you get home from work, in the evening after dinner, or whenver you can fit it into your schedule. In general, remember

calories in < calories out = fat loss

I just found out that there is going to be a ten year highschool reunion for my grad class this august. I said I was going to go and already sent the check in the mail. Well I looked at the website for who is already signed up to go and this guy that was really popular who I was madly in love with is going to be there. He knew I liked him and treated me like dirt. I still get nightmares sometimes. I've changed alot since school. My question is how can I be less nervous when I go and have to see him? Also how should I act around him? (link)
I'm certain that both you and he have changed considerably since high school. I feel that I have made such changes, and I've only been out of high school for three years. However, being suddenly surrounded by people from that part of your life can make you begin thinking and acting like you did back then. If you do feel a certain tension between yourself and this man or if he treats you badly at the event, try your best to brush it off and remember that you've grown up and your life is different now. You may find that you are able to talk to and relate to him better now than you did in high school. In any case, remember that your friends deserve your attention at the reunion and that, above all else, you should be enjoying yourself.

I am a pepper fiend. I put pepper on practically everything but sweets. My question is, could that be misconstrued as an insult?

My brother's girlfriend kindly made dinner for our family for the first time, a few weeks back. Chicken. Of course, I went nuts with the pepper shaker. The way she looked at me really hurt my feelings. I don't think she purposely shot me down. I think she was just more in shock that I had the nerve to do that. She eats dinner with us everynight, though. She knows my routine. It's nothing new. I still felt like a jerk. I didn't say anything then, but I probably should have. Now it's too late, and I would just like to gather multiple opinions for future reference. I'd hate to unintentionally put somebody (who so generously devoted their time and effort to please me) down.

So if you worked all day to prepare a meal for your guests (even family) and someone were to pepper the hell out of it, would you take offense? (link)
Personally, I would take no offense because I can respect the fact that different people have different tastes. However, in a situation where someone important to you has taken the time to prepare a meal, you may wish to be subtle about adding pepper or any other condiments. Also, it's always polite to try the dish first before assuming that it needs to be altered to suit your tastes. If you are worried about this becoming a social problem in the future, you may wish to begin using less pepper in everyday life so that you don't drown dishes in pepper out of habit.
