Distracted soul ruining my studies, and my chance at college!

Question Posted Wednesday June 22 2011, 1:42 am

16/f/India
Okay so I am in senior year. Here 12th grade is VERY important..My admissions into a good college will be only on the basis of the marks I score in my "board examination" which is held at the end of the year. The papers are not checked by my teachers but by some other teachers who don't know me and are teaching in some other school. This is done to make the examination fair. The cutoffs for any college where i live (new delhi) are CRAZZY. I mean nothing below a 475/500 is acceptable.
I have Physics, Chemistry, Computer science, English and Maths as my subjects.
Im telling you all of this just so that you know there is a lot of pressure to perform well.. and I have to in order to get a good college.
Ive just been real distracted for a while. I don't know how to concentrate on my studies. I dont feel like sitting with my books. It is freaking me out because every day matters to me. Please help!!!!!

you just have to stay focused on your goals.
you want to get into a good college ? well, youre gonna need to work for it.
reminding yourself how badly you want this will most definitely help.
you also have to keep your confidence up.. if you KNOW youre good at studying and good at what you do, then dont doubt yourself. this exam should be a piece of cake for you. keep doing what youve been doing because it has gotten you this far with excellent grades and studying habits.
you already have the extra edge. youre brilliant, obviously. just keep your eye on the prize.. a good college :]
you will do spectacular. just relax and dont obsess over it or youll psych yourself out, trust me. good luck ! hope i helped, xxo.

Try setting up little rewards for yourself...like, say," I will earn myself a piece of candy if I study for 30 minutes." It might help motivate you in a way that doesn't make you panic. Yes, the examination is important, but if you think too long on that you can scare yourself to the point of distraction. So, set up little rewards for yourself that don't remind you of that.

Be sure to study somewhere away from distractions like the Internet or chatty friends, if you can. If you are having trouble focusing in the first place, external distractions wont help.

Also, try some new ways of study that aren't just plain memorization from books. Use flash cards, or make up a game that helps you remember the important information you need to know. If the books aren't working for you, maybe some other method of study will work for you.

Try not to think so much about the importance of the exam. You seem to be a pretty good student from what you say, but you lack confidence in yourself. Tell yourself that you can do this. You are going to go in there and do fantastic on your exams, and let's see other people even try to get in your way. You will do this. It just requires some effort on your part as you study. But don't lose that confidence in yourself because that is almost as important as studying.

And remember, what happens will happen. I used to be really obsessive about getting perfect scores on all my assignments, and the stress almost broke me. Now I'm a bit more relaxed. I still aim for the top and put all my effort into my work, but I accept that I will not always be the best. Maybe you will get a 474/500 or something like that, but it wont be the end of your life. You are a good student; you have excellent skills in English, Math, and all the subjects you have studied. Even if you don't get into the top college, no one can take these skills from you. There are plenty of paths you can take in life and missing the cutoff on the exam with not close all of them to you. You are intelligent, skilled, and you have a future regardless of what happens on this test. Remember that, but study hard anyway. ;) I believe in you.

Hey(: well thanks for asking! umm so your basicaly saying your stressed right and you don't want to study because you have a lot? well Here is my advice, Try to think of things that make you happy like a boyfriend, a pet, a memory things like that or things your looking forward to doing(: also maybe set a certain time late in the day to study so you can get all of your things for the day done so you don't have and worries on your mind and maybe to make it more fun bring some snacks you like up to your room and maybe make a pillow pallet on the floor and like blankets and stuff to make it more "fun" haha instead of just sitting at your desk. Another thing is set a certain amount of time each day to study, so you don't overdue it and get stressed/ or more stressed than you already are! I think all of those things I told you will help a lot! I hope I helped you Good luck(: let me know if you need anymore help/ questions on this or anything else let me know! thanks again for asking(:

I understand that you're in a tough situation but the world will not come to an end if you don't score high on those tests. You can still excel in your studies if you're in a mediocre college and get to the top of your class there. Being distracted is normal in life and can sometimes be healthy to balance out school and your social life. I'ts great to study hard but make a little time to give your brain a break and do something fun. Your path will take a course that I'm sure you'll bape able to handle when the time is right. I hope this helps and good luck.

WittyUsernameHere answered Wednesday June 22 2011, 12:38 pm:
Honestly, be healthy. Getting yourself into a routine which includes studying will help you focus.

8 hours sleep every night. 3 meals a day with a few snacks (fruit or something) whenever you can manage it. Set out your study time, study for half an hour and take a 10 minute break, then do it all over again.

The breaks during studying help your mind relax, past half an hour your retention drops if you don't let your mind rest a little bit. Get a movie you like, a book, something that will take your mind entirely off studying for a few minutes, then put it down and go back.

Plan out your studying so you can cover new material. The key to repetition is giving your mind time to go over something, giving it time to forget, then going over it again. Things will stick, others won't, and you can refocus on the less clear parts and pick those up. So like study chemistry for 30 minutes, read a book, then study english for 30 minutes, then read a book, then go back to chemistry and see what stuck and focus on what didn't.

Set aside time every night for fun and for work. You have to find a balance which will help you keep your focus while not spending too much time in leisure that you don't get what you need to get done, done.

That's the best I've got. Studying has honestly never been my strong suit, but this stuff is what others have taught me to try to improve my study habits. The problem is habits only get you so far, because in the end it's your ability to take a test that reigns supreme. You can know everything you should know and still choke on a test, lose your head enough that you can't focus and remember what you need to remember, think how you need to think.

You can know how to do calculus and still get algebra problems if you lose your head and forget to carry over or something. That's all about calm patience.

Go to bed early before the test. Study enough that it's not a problem, then wake up and have a good breakfast, something with protein. Give yourself some time to warm up mentally in the morning by going lightly over whatever you think you need to improve so that it's got one final application on your mind. Keep calm, take your test, do the best you can.

You've gotta just work on suppressing the worry. It won't help. Focus on something else, even escapism if you need to. The more time you spend worrying the more stress you put on yourself and the harder it will be to perform the day of the test. Lock it away, bury it deep down, let it out after you've turned in the test and walked out the door. That's when you can feel free to dissolve into a puddle of nervous worry.

DearAbby92 answered Wednesday June 22 2011, 12:24 pm:
Hi there :)

First off, I'm shocked to here how competitive it is in New Delhi. In the US, college admissions are based off of a number of elements, such as test scores but also GPA (grades you have gotten in each class all four years of high school), extra curricular activities, volunteer work, and writing. We get the chance to show some personality to schools, and I wish you had that chance.

All I can suggest is using the time you have wisely. Don't over do the studying, but make time for it every day. If you can take an hour to study one subject every day, you will be on the right track. Try practice tests and working with other students. Have you considered getting a tutor? I had a tutor for my SAT testing and he helped me raise my score about 80 points.

It's hard to concentrate on boring subjects, but this is something that you have to buckle down on and tough it out.

Test scores are not the end. If you cannot get into the college you want in India, there is opportunity for you elsewhere. You could probably get a substantial scholarship in America to a prestigious college even if you don't make top marks. Your success is in your hands, not the hands of the teachers grading your test scores.

Work hard, do your best, and then plan your next move from there.

Good luck,

-Abby

Because you live in a different culture it is hard for me to give you sound advice. I don't fully understand the pressures. But I would say that you are letting the pressure affect you and that's why you can't concentrate. I know its important on the outside, but really, your whole life will not be about what college you get into. There are so many other things that will happen to you that will shape your life and who you become that have absolutely nothing to do with school. That being said, try to take some of the pressure off yourself by giving yourself a break. Take one day a week off from studying to do something that you enjoy. Or try taking mini breaks during your study days to relax, talk with friends or enjoy an activity. Your brain needs a rest! You're freaking yourself out and the only way to get over it is to find some time to just relax. You may feel guilty at first because you are not studying, but trust me, in the long run it is better for your brain and your emotional health to take a break every now and then. Then you will feel refreshed when you return to your studies. Good luck. You will be just fine, no matter what happens, I promise.

I see. You should do what I used to do. Here it is:
1) Know what your goal is in life, which is to get into a very good college. Know that you are studying for this reason and that it is really important to you.
2) Believe that you can do it. I studied psychology and I advice you to watch the movie called "the secret" it shows how the human brain works and how it effects your every day. This could help allot.
3) A reason why you might not be distracted is because you have something on your mind. Always do this: Have a special room to you that is dedicated to studying, and remember that every time you walk in this room, all the stress and tension that you went through in the day will go away and just go to studying. It really help to concentrate.
4) When you study, make it seem fun. Back in high school, I was into Drama allot, and I used to practice it when I was studying. I would go into a room and pretend that I was in a different year and that I was learning about the war ( I was studying history at the time) that just happened. It really helped me out of boredom while studying, and I got better at drama. Try this.

If you need any more ways, just email me at AskAliceMadisson@hotmail.com and I will give you more ways to study! It's all free! Good Luck

Hey don't stress yourself out number one. I'm in college right now and maintain a 3.8 out of a 4.0 gpa in one way or another. What I do to help me study is chill outside, when the weather is nice.. :) Either that or have a designated place set where you study and nothing else. Assuming the place where you sleep is a bed, don't study there. Or you can go to the library, even stay after school. If you have friends that have the same goal as you, it might help to study with them. Right now I'm attending community college. If you have something like that there, I don't think there's anything wrong with starting out there.. A lot of my credits will transfer to the school I want to go too. Hope I helped.

Hey I understand that you are stressed out because what you do now will influence your future. All you have to do is stay calm and don't get too stressed out. The important thing is to motivate yourself each day. Do not lose concentration. Don't overwork yourself either. You just need to get motivated again then you won't be distracted anymore. Think about the great college you will get in if you work hard and how bright your future will be. You can also try listening to a few motivational songs.

Hope things work out for you.
