Are ultra thin condoms more likely to break?

Question Posted Monday August 2 2010, 5:11 pm

My boyfriend bought a box of condoms that are marked as ultra thin or whatever. I told him I won't use them because I think they probably are more likely to break and I'm not on birth control pills so we don't have a back up protection thing or whatever. He says they aren't more likely to break than like regular condoms and doesn't want to go buy more condoms.

Are these thing condoms more likely to break or not?

Need to know

They're no more likely to break through the friction of sex itself than any others but they are more delicate. Nails and jewellery, especially rings, can catch on a condom and tear it, so as with any condom you need to be careful putting one on.

However, if you are having regular sex with your boyfriend then it's a good idea to look into other forms of contraception. No form of contraception is 100% but if you combine them, such as Pill/condoms, you stand a better chance. Birth control will also give you peace of mind if the condom does break.

Yes in my experience I have had several extra thin ones break on me. Yeah they probably meet the standards they have to, but the normal ones are safer to use.

Condoms labeled ultra thin can only be sold because they've tested them. Most the time it tells you they're tested. On the back or wherever there's information. My boyfriend and I use ultra thin condoms five or six times and they've never broken.

Yes they are. Maybe they are the super stretch size or watever...but ignore that. Fact is, the less material, the more delicate.

I just wanna mention that i don't overly think your boyfriend's being a 'jerk' as suggested... I just think that he should probably of explained how they are safe or should have got some more. He's not a jerk though!

Don't worry about them being too thin, like previously mentioned they have to meet the law so you'll be fine.

I'm so glad, however, to hear that i'm not the only person who worries about things like this! I'm proud that you'd rather not have sex than risk it! I'm sooo the same :) xx

They are not more likely to break.
(Also your boyfriend is being a jerk.)

All condoms must meet the exact same safety standards, by law, in order to be sold. So your ultra thin condoms are just as safe as any other condom you can buy.

The biggest factors in torn or broken condoms are people using them improperly. So, you need to make sure of things like storing them out of the heat, the cold or direct light, making sure to use the proper size for your partner, handling them gently and putting them on correctly. If you are concerned about condoms breaking the very best thing you can do is both you and your boyfriend making sure you know how to put them on correctly, and practicing it.

(Your boyfriend was a jerk about this though, and you should tell him as much. When your partner is uncomfortable with the contraception plan, you change the contraception plan or you don't get to sleep with that person. Period. He basically just said your concerns weren’t worth another 20$ to him, jerk. Even though you were misinformed about thin condoms, that was still not the best way for him to respond.)

from what my uncle has told me. yes!
they are more likely to break because they are thinner. if your going to use these condoms they should be used orally (altho most people use flavored ones instead) or for some very gentle loving, and are not to be used for anal sex.
secondly if hes not willing to go and buy more condoms. that shows me what kind of guy he is. someone i wouldnt want to be having sex with.

the reason why most men like thinner condoms is so they can get more of a sensation. if this is so i recommend gettin so sensitive condoms ( average thickness, but have features to make it more pleasure able for him.)

i dont know how old you are but you seem to be 16-20 kind of age range roughly. for someone of that age i recommend the thicker condoms. because when we are young we get more excited and are more... faster lets put it ;) hehe ;).

Probably not, as all condoms are required by law to be factory tested for dependency . What makes them more likely to break is dryness.
