still scared of the dark

Question Posted Sunday December 30 2007, 4:22 pm

ok so im 14/f and still TERRIFIED of the dark. every night when i go to sleep i imagine murderers breaking in and killing me. I don't watch scary movies anymore, just a few here and there. the old ones still come back to haunt me, i'll remember any scary thought when it's nighttime. the fact that my house is PITCH BLACK at night doesn't help at all either. i really really desperately need help, i'm scared to go to bed at night. i can't even get up to go pee because im scared the killer with "hear me". i want to use a nightlight, but i don't want my parents to think i'm a wuss, i mean i'm 14!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me find a way to be comfortable in my own house at night.

I know EXACTLY how you feel. Here are some ways that make me feel better at home :)

1. If you have a TV in your room, you can watch something humorous/happy before/during you sleep. I like to fall asleep with my TV turned on, because part of my fright is the noises your mind exatterates

2. Radio. Music can always help you block out the creepy sounds and thoughts

3. Just know that there is nothing out there. Keep a phone near you when you sleep, so that you can be reassured that anything that happens, you will be safe.

This fright is completly normal, and everyone has there own ways of helping themselves get over it. Like me, I found that the direction of where I sleep and the position of my bed plays a big part. I sleep facing the door and my bed is in the corner. :) trust me, it helps. I hope you get over your fears, and feel free to ask me any other questions.

Hope I helped,
-Jessica- :)

im the same way in a sense, im terrified of the dark also. but, since i have plenty of windows in my room, i open them + all the street lights + the house lights, which helps a bit. also, maybe you can ask your parents for a TV in your room, i have one + it makes my room a lot brighter. so what if you use a nightlight? if it makes you comofortable then go for it, + your parents wont make fun of you, they're your parents, they want you to be happy. after i watched Scream 2, i was petrified, but the only way to overcome your fear + being able to face it. also, if you have a cellphone, try keeping the backlight on for a bit to make it a bit brighter. dont worry, a lot of young adults are afraid of the dark, your not the only one! [:

i hope i helped!

Don't worry, you're not at all alone in this situation. I still like to have a light on when I go to bed, I have this light that changes colour and it's placed across the room near my door, so this way I have some sort of light to help me get to sleep at night. You're not at all a wuss, this is perfectly normal, I know tons of people who still like to have light on when they go to bed, it's not wussy, I mean if it will help you get to sleep than the better. Don't feel at all embarassed of being scared of the dark because you're not alone, even my 18 year old brother still has to make sure all the lights in the house are on before he can get to sleep after a scary movie. Buying a night light or some sort of light to help you get to sleep is not wussy, it's actually quite brave, why? Because you're facing your fears and finding a solution, if a light will help you sleep at night, than by no means should anything be stopping you from getting one! Also if you're really worried about someone being in your house when you're asleep, don't be afraid to talk to your parents about that, they'll want to make sure that you always feel safe in your own house, as long as the doors are locked and your parents are in your house, no one will break in, if they did(By some very teency weency chance)Then you'll hear them, along with the rest of your family, if you have an alarm it will go off, close neighbors? They'll find out. Don't worry, you're safe:)
Good luck!I hope I could help.
Always here,

phatdopelove answered Monday December 31 2007, 10:01 am:
All people experience a fear of the dark, if they haven't yet they will at least one pt. in their life.
1. If you watch scary/suspense movies, try not to watch it at night. Save those movies for early times in a day, like the morning, or afternoon. That way it can help you think less about the scary parts that happened in the movie when you go to sleep at night. Or if you really want to watch scary/suspense movies at night then turn on a light when you watch it, see if that helps. But I really recommend my #1 response for you. That helps better.

If you have to go the bathroom, use it. It's not good to hold it, you could get kidney stones. (Which really hurts) A doctor will tell you that.

Don't be embarrassed of asking your parents for a nightlight, they should understand. Chances are they've been scared of the dark too when they were younger. Even if they don't admit it. They have, (been scared of the dark before) trust me.
It will help you.

Tip 1: So the light won't disturb your parents keep the door to your room closed. This could also help with that thought you have of a "killer" coming after you.

TIP 2: When you go to the bathroom take the nightlight from your room (or buy an extra one) with you and turn it on in the hallway (if you have an outlet where you go to the bathroom). If you don't have a plug-in carry a flashlight with you when you go to the bathroom. Also, I could say you can turn on the light in a room so that you can see where you're going and helps with that fear but it might disturb your parents if there is a whole bright light in a room. So a plug-in or a flashlight is recommended. Turn this on only when you go to the bathroom.

TIP 3: Watch a comedy something really funny before you to bed rather than a horror/suspense movie. It can help you to rid of those bad thoughts. You'll sleep on all the funny parts and candy and sugar plums plus happy faces dance in your head :) So watch a comedy movie before you go to bed, see if that helps.

Well this is all I have left that I can give you, and I hope I really helped. And I hope that you achieve your fear, and you will, it just takes time. Have good luck and a hope you have a HAPPY NEW YEAR! :)

kc answered Monday December 31 2007, 9:41 am:
You are not the only one that is afraid of being in the dark. I know plenty of people your age and older who sleep with a night light or a hall light on because they just cannot go through being in the pitch black.

It's not about being a wuss, it's about feeling safe in your own home. If you don't feel safe in the place you live, you shouldn't be afraid to add something like a nightlight to change that. If you parents don't understand that, then fine. YOU want to feel better about the night life, not them. The dark is freaky, but it's not the DARK that you are afraid of, it's what is in it which you need to work on.

If you don't want to try out a nightlight yet, then try keeping your door open a little bit, and keeping some kind of light on. Also, you should probably be the one to lock the doors/windows at night. That way you know for sure no one can get in.

I used this when I was little and still sometimes use it today, and it works like a charm:
When you are lying in bed and thought and pictures come up in your mind of a murderer in your home or whatnot, think of it as a movie. When you see the murderer, pretend there is a director yelling "CUT!" during it, and yelling at the guy for doing a horrible job at the part. Trust me, it may sound stupid, but you'll get a laugh out of it, and eventually fall asleep.

Eventually, you will grow out of it, but for now I suggest you should get a nightlight. If none of these work, maybe you should consider a sleeping aid for a little bit.

I know how you feel. I'm 15 years old and to this day I still can't sleep in the dark. I normally keep my door open so the kitchen light will come threw or I turn on my nightlight (yes I have a nightlight lol). You shouldn't be ashamed to get one. There are grown adults out there that are afraid of the dark and have nightlights. but if you really don't want one, just keep in mind that whatever is there during the day is there during the night. Nothing changes. If that all fails you can always ask your parents for help on coping with it. I'm sure they won't judge you for being afraid. Everyone has their fears. Hope I helped :)

Corbie answered Sunday December 30 2007, 11:15 pm:
Well I have one way that might make you feel a LITTLE more comfortable. It's a little bit of a different problem but sort of the same too. I love the dark, I just don't like what is in the dark. I have those thoughts too; about if someone is going to come out of my closet from hiding or someone just breaks in. It is something that haunts my mind as well and I am 15 lol; BUT there are ways to handle it. I don't know if you believe in God or go to church but I do and that is my getaway. I just think of a prayer in my head and think about God or I think about my boyfriend or someone I love is in the room with me at all times. I actually used to sleep with my t.v on, or a radio. I just need noise to cover up the creaks and scratches. Maybe if you have a t.v you can turn it on and act like you fall asleep to a movie or you can just try music. One more option is something my dad did for me. You know the shapes they sell in walmart but are like electric light? my dad got me a dolphin shaped one so when I plug it up and turn it out it's like electric light and I leave that on at night. Get one; it's not like a night light it is just a creative light you like in your room for "style".

I hope this helps, Corbie♀

orphans answered Sunday December 30 2007, 6:35 pm:
hah yehh im the same way. eventuall though i just suck it up and have to go to the bathroom. i realize that i live in a safe neighborhood, and theres no way anyone could get in. especially since my windows are always locked, especially since i dont open them in the winter, and sometimes i lock my door.
what you should get is a clap on/clap off light. that way, if your too scared to get up you just clap. also, if there really was a killer, hed probably set off the light. or you could just get a light that moves at any motion at all.
ask your parents. i mean mine know im afraid of the dark. im not as afraid as you, (no offense,) but i still get reaaally spooked. my parents just make fun of me, but they understand. by telling the, they are able to joke about it, which might help you overcome it a little, because it sure helped me did. like this is an example: as a child, i was really terrified of leprechauns haha, becuase once i watched this show and they were on it and it just scareedd me out of my pants. but now, my parents joke about it, and i realize how ridiculous i was. but if i saw one, i would be scared shiiittleeesss. but i dont live in constant fear of them anymore.
deffinantly ask your parents, they'll be a lot more comforting then me, since you can trust them more than me haha. but i can relate to you, so id suggest doign those few things to get over your feaarr.
sorry this is kinda long, but i wish you the best of lucckkk and if you ever have any more questions always feel free to ask me =]

beckss answered Sunday December 30 2007, 5:41 pm:
That's nothing to be ashamed of. People are scared of the most bizzare things, and the dark isnt that bizzare because I use to be too. Actually, not AFRAID of the dark but I would imagine murderes or scenes from a scary movie I just saw. You shouldnt be embarrased to tell your parents because they also need to help you overcome your fear. You do need a nightlight and it's not like your a wuss because you want one, people use nightlights to be able to see where they are going if they wake up in the middle of the night to go pee for example lol. Also, you should maybe leave atleast one light on in your house like the kitchen so it's not PITCH BLACK. If you happen to be scared when you are in bed, just hug your pillow or stuffed animal and think of something that will make you happy. :) I really hope I helped.

MzJENNiFER answered Sunday December 30 2007, 5:35 pm:
The really funny thing about that is I was exactly the same way when I was your age. What I did was I put out candles. After a while my mom said I shouldn't do that in case of a fire so I put on my TV throughout the whole night. After that, my mom started complaining about the TV so I convinced my mom to buy me a nightlight by looking about a really cute one and telling my mom I really wanted it because it matched my room. If you're not sure that will work, buy a book light that runs off batteries and tell your parents that you like to read at night. Worse comes to worse, explain to your parents whats going on.
Good Luck:]

Teza answered Sunday December 30 2007, 5:34 pm:
It's okay if you're scared but it doesn't make you a "wuss". You should tell your mom to get you a nightlight, the ones that you can just plug in. She won't think anything bad. You're her daughter and she loves you no matter what. Before you go to sleep, listen to some music, read a book, or watch tv to get your mind off the bad thoughts. Hopefully it'll work. If it makes you feel better, make yourself get up and check that no one is there. Be brave enough to do it and then you'll get over your fear.

Matt answered Sunday December 30 2007, 5:32 pm:
Buy a night light anyway. If you need an excuse to have one for your parents' sake, just say you need one in order to get up to go to the bathroom, because once you nicked your toe on your dresser or something.

According to that, you might need help from a specialist. :x

Im really scared of the dark too because for some reason in my house whenever it is light or whatever everything is calm and relaxing. BUT when I turn off the lights of course I hear noises that creep me out. But than I just think, 'Everything was fine just two minutes ago when It turned off the lights. The doors are locked and my dogs are by me so I'm safe and just fine, there is nothing to be scared of.' And I can eventually calm myself down. Just think of non-scary things and think of peacful things or what you want to dream about. Good Luck! <3

jediforhire answered Sunday December 30 2007, 4:56 pm:
Well, first off thanks for asking me.

Frankly I'm not quite sure how to answer this, but i certainly understand your problem.
Being afraid of the dark is a legitimate and very common fear, many people much older than you are in the same situation.
I guess my point is that its not really something to feel ashamed about, and that it shouldn't matter what other people think about you.
So, I suggest leaving your bedside lamp on or something like that, and if anyone asks just say that you like sleeping with a light on.

And thinking about it logically, what are the chances of some killer breaking into your house and murdering you? Next to none.

So, turn a light on, close the blinds, whatever helps you sleep. And think about it logically, the fear though real, is ridiculous.
Over time you need to learn to get over it and convince yourself that nothing bad is going to happen to you, that there aren't monsters under the bed, and there aren't axe murderers in the hallway closet.

Good luck, just remember that its ok to be afraid of the dark, and that you can get over it eventually.

Sima answered Sunday December 30 2007, 4:46 pm:
I understand EXACTLY what you're going through. When I was 12/13 [I'm 15 now], I couldn't even go upstairs and clean my room when I was home alone. It still takes some courage for me to do that. You might imagine murderers but I imagine rapists sometimes. It's hard since we're surrounded by news about Amber Alerts and young little girls being kidnapped [think Madeline McCann].

You have some options on what to do with lighting:
a] Keep the light on in your closet.
b] Get a small lamp and put it on the floor in the farthest corner in your room so that the light doesn't disturb you.
c] OR, get a Glade PlugIn that is basically a night light, but looks much better [your parents won't think you're a wuss].

[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

Basically, you can put it on your night stand or your dresser, and your room smells good and it's lighted, but still gives you the ability to sleep without being interrupted.

Just remember that your parents are there, and the chances of a break in are slim to none. Also, ask if your parents can turn on the alarm system, and check all of the locks and windows to make sure that everything is safe and secure so you feel better before you go to bed.

I hope this helped you, and I hope this was the answer that you are looking for.

Good luck, and if you need further assistance, do not hesistate to drop on by again. :]
