I just got a guinea pig from petsmart today. They said I could hold it and pet it. But when she got home I tried to pick her up but she had her claws out and was scratching me. I put her back down. When I try to pick her up will she claw me, then get calm? Because I want to hold her. Please give me some advice! If she stays mean I'll just leave her in her cage and leave her be, but it will be sad to know that I wasted $113.oo on her, the food and the cage!!
And supposedly she was separated from males so this wouldn't happen.
Anyway, she might just be scared and be getting used to you and her new home. Be patient, don't give up on her. Animals have to know that they can trust you and need to change to the new environment. [ rubytuesday's advice column | Ask rubytuesday A Question ]

This should pass over. This is what happened to my hamster, and it is probably because it is a new environment for it. It is not used to its' surroundings yet. Give it time- and pet it, care for it, and play with it as much as you can:] [ ASAPcamille's advice column | Ask ASAPcamille A Question ]

Pick up some gardening gloves that are thick, she won't be able to scratch you that way. Once she has warmed up to you the gloves won't be necessary anymore. From what I have read they thrive on routine. They like to eat, be played with etc. at the same time every day. Whatever routine she had is messed up right now! Somebody took her out of her home
and moved her somewhere strange with strange people. As soon as she gets to know you and feels safe, she will calm down.
There are quite a few good websites on Guinea pigs
care. I will give you the search I used if you care to have a look at some of them. :)

unfourtunately, this is because they never trained your guinea pig. that is why she is scared to be held, and is going to try to defend herself, by scratching you.
one way to train when they bite, is to flick them on the nose. one time, nothing more, and nothing less. this will have them associating biting or scratching with something like that, and they wont want to do it.
make sure anyone who holds her, however, does this. you don't want to go confusing her about what the consequences are.
also, try being the one to feed her. this will form a trust relationship, as weird as it sounds, haha.
you can start training like this while wearing gloaves. this will help you so that you don't have to put her away right away, while training.
try that for a while, and if that dosen't work too well, go to your pet store, and tell them about the situation, and they SHOULD be able to help.

Do NOT bother her while she is eating, she might claw you again. Then calmly, take your finger and stroke her at the top of her head. Guinea pigs LOVE that. Did you guys buy her that plastic ball that she can roll in? If you didn't, then I highly would suggest it, they're only a couple of dollars at Walmart. Let her roll around in the ball and explore your room or the living room. Let her get used to her new home. Don't worry too much about it, give her a few days to get settled and you should be alright. Inbox me if you need any more info. on guinea pigs.

First let her get used to having your hand in the cage with food in it. Be patient. You have to be patient with all pets. Don't give up, then she will stay mean.
