For school dress codes, make it persuasive speech about how schools shouldn't have them. Or, you could stay neutral. It's good because then teens won't see school as a fashion show, or that they have to look the best, or somebody else has the same thing you have. But then again, having your own clothes is good because you can have your own personal style.
Off campus lunches can be good because it's not the crap they serve you at school, and you don't have to have a bunch of noise when you eat from everyone talking. Again though, it's fairly relative that kids will often just not come back to school, or they'll get so caught up in talking to their friends [and not having a bell to let them know lunch is over], that they'll forget about school & possibly stay, or lose track of time.
Abortion is good when you've been raped, or if you're young. But again, if you can make it, you can have it too. Also, babies deserve to live. I bet it'd suck to have known your mother wanted to kill you too.
Technology definitely is changing life. You have the world at your fingertips with the internet. You no longer have to count on simple things like cleaning, or homework to entertain you. Music/tv can do that. It's a quicker form of communication rather than just writing a letter, or talking on the phone. Some people don't have internet, or they're not home, or they just have dial up for that matter. Then again, technology can be a bad thing because it's making teens more lazy, and dependant on a computer to do things for them. Like talk to their friends, and do their papers.
But, the choice of what to do for your paper is totally your's. I'd do one of those. :]
jeanine278972 answered Wednesday January 10 2007, 9:33 pm: Whatever you do, make sure you can keep the audience's attention. Use lots of examples and if you can, bring in some type of visual aid to help you out. The 10 minutes will fly by.
-The one on current technology wouldn't be too bad. You could make them think about how the world would be without internet and cell phones.
-Also, the abortion one would be good since your teacher would have a harder time marking your grade down for your opinion. Talk about like teens and abortion. Mention stuff like how it affects people not only physically and mentally. Also, not only how it affects them now, but research how it can affect them in the future.
-Another one you might look into, would be something along the lines of lab testing on animals. It is also a very controversial issue. I did a report on that, and found some great stories about it. There are stories about animals that were rescued from labs, and the treatment the animals get before, during, and after the testing. FOr that one, talk about how if we buy products of companies that test on animals, we are helping pay for them to harm these poor creatures.
-something else that would be good, Violence in the media. We talked about this in my Social Problems class. You could talk about how every day the media shows us some type of violence. It is such a part of our everyday lives. People are so used to it, it doesn't bother most people anymore. We're used to seeing bloody crime scenes on CSI and people getting shot on NYPD Blue. We have grown up in a society that promotes violence. That would be an easy one to do.
- You might look into doing one on Cell Phones in general. They are a good thing, but can also be a nuisance (sp?) People leave them on in school and church and disturb those around them. Places have resulted in using a new paint that blocks all cell phone signal inside the building. You could talk about how cell phones are both good and bad, like a comparison of the pros and cons of the technology advances. Also, you can talk about how cameras on the cell phones can be abused. Since everyone carries their cell phones with them, they have access to a camera all the time too. They can take pictures and use them for blackmail when someone does something they shouldn't. They can also get pictures and the other person doesn't know it.
- One last thing and i swear im done. -
- College Costs. College is so expensive today, and there isn't enough government money to help out the families that can't afford to send their children to school. Show how in state and out of state tuition compare, and how a small scale college costs in comparision to a large university. [ jeanine278972's advice column | Ask jeanine278972 A Question ]
amanda_bear answered Wednesday January 10 2007, 6:51 pm: unlike what a different columnist said. i think that you should go with abortion. a teacher cant give you a bad grade because what you did on your repot offended him. abortion is a good issue to do because there are two strong sides of it. go with the one that you want. i did a speech on abortion and it lasted about 15 and 1/2 minutes. it is a good topic and i think that you should go for it. i hope that i helped.=) [ amanda_bear's advice column | Ask amanda_bear A Question ]
kc answered Wednesday January 10 2007, 6:24 pm: I was in this kind of thing too.
Everyone is going to think of a topic like that, why don't you do something a little different, get your audience in the mood.
I did Hauntings, like ghosts and stuff. Went on google and looks up stories about ghosts and hauntings all around my state, and in the U.S.
It was a huge hit, everyone was amazed. I made a poster with different pictures I found, and they really liked it.
Do something fun. It would wake people up and get them interested.
Alin75 answered Wednesday January 10 2007, 12:41 pm: Ok first of all, you could talk for ages on abortion. One could probably go twice as long on "how technology is changing life". I grew up in the 80's, and let me tell you I could probably go for an hour off the top of my head- starting with how the annonimity of the internet is breeding the rudest bunch of kids in the history of mankind.
However, here are some other options:
- global warming (a current "hot topic" on advicentors actually)
- outsourcing/ offshoring... good or bad for the economy?
- animal welfare/ rights
- when is it ethical to go to war?
- should religion and politics mix?
- should drugs be legalised (an ancient debate I know, but then again, so is abortion).
Well thats a few off the top of my head. Good luck on Friday.
Edit: Just noticed the other post. The advice to steer clear of "hot topics" is probably good. You will notice I gave you only hot topics lol. Good advice or not, I generally feel that if it doesnt have the chance to shatter someone's perception of reality, then its not worth doing. But its most certainly risky. Just thought I would add that. [ Alin75's advice column | Ask Alin75 A Question ]
Xenolan answered Wednesday January 10 2007, 12:36 pm: Well, if you've only got two days, you'd better pick something you're already familiar with. You don't have time to do exhaustive research.
I'd steer clear of abortion and other really hot-button issues. There's certainly a lot to talk about, but you run the risk of offending the instructor and that won't do your grade any good. A truly ethical teacher would grade objectively, but there's always the chance that his personal feelings may influence him without his realizing it.
Actually, when one is in a classroom situation, the topic doesn't usually matter nearly as much as your delivery. It is therefore best to pick something that you know you can speak confidently about.
Ten minutes is a lot shorter than it sounds; you could probably fill hours with any of the topics you mention above (except for off-campus lunches; I'd give that one a pass). Of the ones on your list, I think the last might be the most interesting, but it needs to be narrowed down a bit - speak about how just ONE particular technology is changing lives, such as the cell phone or the internet. And make sure you have real facts and numbers to back you up; don't just talk about your impressions. Part of your grade will undoubtably be about how thoroughly you did your research and how well you can support your statements. Among the notes you take to the podium should be your list of sources for your data - offer to turn this in, it may get you extra credit.
Finally, try to find the time to practice the speech before Friday. You don't have much time left, but it will really hurt you if you're giving it for the first time in front of the class.
