Isn't annoying when people type in run-on sentences and don't punctuate? It makes the question/statement difficult to understand and read. I can understand when people sometimes misspell words; but I hate when people don't even attempt at making themselves seem somewhat intelligent. It is bothersome when people type a response or question like its a text message. No, I'm not an English teacher if you're wondering. I am a sixteen year old female that is in high school.
But what really gets to me is when people don't make sense in what they are typing. It's like I will get completely lost and will have to skip it. The moderators really need to write those people a personal message saying that the question won't be submitted until the question has correct grammer and makes some sense! And we aren't even asking for that much here, just a little grammer, not a big run-on sentence that gives us a headache!
Siren_Cytherea answered Monday October 30 2006, 7:49 pm: I concur. I'm a grammar nazi and it drives me absolutely insane to see run on sentences. If I get them in my inbox I reject them, or ask the questioner to speak English instead of Babble.
Heh.
So glad I'm not alone in this. [ Siren_Cytherea's advice column | Ask Siren_Cytherea A Question ]
Orpheus answered Monday October 30 2006, 6:41 pm: Incorrect grammar is rampant on this site and can certainly be annoying, but I don't think it's worth worrying about. I admit that I am less likely to answer a question if it is poorly worded or full of intentional misspellings (i.e. "noe" instead of "know" or "rite" instead of "right"), but I do what I can to keep in mind that I am no better than those individuals who write such questions.
Also, not to be rude, but your question and statements lack grammatical perfection (as do my own), so do try to be tolerant of those who do not share your command of the English language. [ Orpheus's advice column | Ask Orpheus A Question ]
mariahwannabe answered Monday October 30 2006, 12:15 pm: I agree but what annoys me is that I was banned for three days for using "text" language like Laugh Out Loud - even though the "question-ner" has used short words themselves!- so they obviously understand it! isis answered Monday October 30 2006, 9:55 am: I agree, it is annoying and it can make the questions hard to read.
Having said that, 200 years ago, spellings and meanings were different to what is accepted as correct today. Different cultures can affect this, eg. US spelling on certain words is different to traditional English spellings. With the influx of text talk, 100 years from now, our descendants will have trouble reading our meanings, phrasing, spellings etc. if this trend continues. The world is changing much faster now than it ever has, not always in a good way. I don't know whether we could/should try to hold on to what we have now, or accept that times are changing and go with the flow. :) [ isis's advice column | Ask isis A Question ]
saltpeppershaker answered Monday October 30 2006, 1:19 am: When people use "u" instead of "you," I get the overwhelming urge to punch them in the face. I'm no grammar genius and not the greatest of spellers, but good god, HOW MUCH TIME IS ANYONE SAVING BY TYPING TWO FEWER LETTERS? I feel your pain. MelLeDisko answered Sunday October 29 2006, 10:11 pm: Haha, I'm somewhat like you. I mean, I've had times where I've forgotten maybe an ' here and there, or I've made several typos and everything, and I'm fine with that, but I don't find it extremely annoying. I actually find it quite funny whenever I'm trying to read the question and they're like "kases" or "iam" "hore" "iiAM DoOnE WiItH HiImMm WhattT SHoUlD I do I DrIVeA cAr AfTeR ScHoOlO."
I mean I'm fine with reading it and everything if there's some mistakes, but I do get annoyed whenever I'm trying to help them, and I have NO CLUE what they're even talking about, haha.
Mr_Skittles answered Sunday October 29 2006, 9:53 pm: Isn't it annoying when haugty teenagers get all gung-ho about grammar? I also happen to be your age, and I also realized this problem you have stated above. How did I resolve it?
I took a moment to understand that most the people on this site are under fourteen years old. Do fourteen year olds, or even kids our age, have good grammar? It most certainly isn't spectacular in most cases.
Run-on sentences aren't hard to read, nor is improper punctuation. What is hard to read is internet chat. I am slightly annoyed when people expect a serious answer yet they type like this " i kno u guys can help me out her because ur really good at doing that"
No one is writing a term paper here, so don't act like they are. It's a fact we must deal with. If you really have a problem with it, don't answer the question, just move on. [ Mr_Skittles's advice column | Ask Mr_Skittles A Question ]
AskAndy answered Sunday October 29 2006, 9:41 pm: This website is full of many young people asking stupid questions half the time, so do you really think they spell. It doesnt bother me though. I do it half the time. Doesnt make me stupid, because I know how to spell correctly, but sometimes it's just convienient if you're not the fastest typer in the world. Hopefully you won't end up an English teacher though. They don't get paid well, and you might rip your hair out at all the dumb things people write =P [ AskAndy's advice column | Ask AskAndy A Question ]
VainTaraLynn answered Sunday October 29 2006, 9:11 pm: Agreed. I personally love when people write formal letters through the usmail & they use short text (u, r, iam) iam really makes me mad. Its either I or I'm, or I am. Not iam
Gosh.
People have brutally murdered the english language. [ VainTaraLynn's advice column | Ask VainTaraLynn A Question ]
