Saving an abused cat

Question Posted Friday August 4 2006, 2:35 pm

I have two former friends who (in my opinion) seriously abuse their cat. "Tammy" will grab the cat by the back legs and spin it around, set it on the floor and flip it in circles, chase it around the house, pull it by its tail when it tries to get away, etc. She's 21, so she's not a kid at all. With her boyfriend, they will put the cat in a pillowcase a breathe lungfulls of marijuana smoke in on it. When they have parties, they will "pass the cat." Everyone in at the party will take the joint and the bagged cat, and on every exhale breathe their smoke into the cat's bag. This will go on for an hour or two before they free the cat. This is just what they do in front of other people.

I can only see where I have there options here, each with problems.
1) Call the police.
2) Break into their house and steal the cat.
3) Do nothing.

I don't want to call the police, because I smoke weed and so do a lot of my friends. Used to, if you got caught in my town you just went to jail. Now you reduce your sentence with every fellow pot head you turn in, all the way up to having no arrest record if you turn in enough people.

I don't want to break in just because...well...it's wrong, I guess. And I really want to do something to help the cat. I've already tried talking to them about it, and it doesn't help.

I would really appreciate any other suggestions, or help picking which option is right. Thanks!

Okay, I know everyone is telling you to be anonymous but fuck that. Call animal control, tell them the situation, and then tell them that you will gladly give a written testimony of the things you've witnessed. Tell them that if they can keep your name anonymous that you'd appreciate it, but it's not necessary.

Do you really want to be friends with sociopaths? That's literally what they are. One of the first signs of a sociopath is how they treat animals. It sounds like you need some new friends.

You're not going to get busted for weed. If you want to take precautions then get the weed and paraphernalia out of your house when you call until things go down, but animal control has no interest or authorization to turn in someone for smoking pot. They'll just be grateful that you had the balls to speak up for that cat.

hi.
oh. my. gosh.
i can not believe that people would do that to an animal. You need to call animal control. NOT the police, animal control or the local shelter. They may be your friends but abusing an inocent cat is wrong.
so look for the animal control # in the phone book and have them take care of it. i think it will work.

This is disgusting behavior. Block your number (*67) and call the animal control. Tell them you are a anonymous caller, but that you would like to report a case of animal abuse. Tell them exactly what's going on with the cat and what the owners are doing to it. Google: Animal Control in (ur state) to get the number.

Call animal control and ask if you can report animal abuse, if not, ask for a number for where you can.

You should not break into the house, ever. Let the professionals handle this situation.

I think you should just take the cat without them knowing if you have the option to do that. And bring the cat to the animal shelter. The cat is probable plenty used to people if it's used to that environment, so he should be friendly enough to get a home right away.

I see nothing wrong with taking the cat from them, what's the worst they could do? Call the cops on you? I don't see that happening.

The police won't do anything, and you I doubt the ASPCA would even be able to do anything. They wouldn't exactly be able to test the cat's hair for THC, that costs money that the police wouldn't bother spending that money on a cat, and the ASPCA wouldn't be able to spend it on one cat who "appears" healthy to strangers.

Well, this is an innocent domesticated animal who is totally dependent upon it's owners to live a humane life. This is a cut and dry case of animal abuse. Anyone who knows about this and doesn't do something to help the cat is guilty too, in my opinion anyway.

It's great that you are reaching out and asking for advice, I can see you really want to help. Anything you attempt to do to save this cat is morally right.

If you have talked to them about this, they will suspect you turned them in if any legal action is taken. They will probably retaliate, so first of all be prepared for that.

I recommend that you stop smoking pot and get rid of anything connected with drugs---paraphenila etc. Take the home drug tests if you want...but in 30 days you should be clean. That way, if they do turn on you, nothing can happen to you. It's a sacrafice I know, but I don't think you can just sit back and allow an innocent cat to be abused for the sake of your own pleasure. If the cat dies from THC poisoning, I doubt you could live with that.

Once you are clean, go to the police and call the local humane society or SPCA. Most areas will allow anonymous tips as part of the crime stoppers program. If you give enough details this may enable the police to get a search warrant. They can also test the cat's hair for THC. No matter if the cat's owners get in trouble, I am positive the cat will be taken away and placed up for adoption.

This sounds extreme, I know, but that innocent little cat doesn't have a voice and can't do anything about his situation.

Search for Crime Stoppers in your City or County for more info.

I deal with our local SPCA all the time. In our county, you could call them and get advice / report the problem but, unfortunately, they probably would not come out and take the cat from the owners. There would have to be horrible neglect such as the cat being locked in the house and not being fed, etc. The police are certainly and option but, again, they probably wouldnt come out and take the cat because it is not their area of expertise. This is quite the dilema. Certainly, the cat's life is in danger and the poor thing deserves a better life. Why dont you offer to buy the cat from them? Or ask one of your friends to do so? If they smoke a lot of pot, they could use the extra cash. Maybe you could offer them something in "trade" for the cat....

Moop answered Friday August 4 2006, 4:44 pm:
nearly every local police department has an anonymous hotline that you can call. if you're still freaked out about the marijauna allegations stop using for a month and then call or convince a non-user to call. a month will allow the marijauna to get out of your system and become untraceable by the police. animal control, a local branch of the ASPCA (www.aspca.org), local shelters, etc. will all jump with your anonymous phone call.

FireFairy141 answered Friday August 4 2006, 4:24 pm:
you should call the spca. Because its not the police, and you can remane anonymous, you wont have to worry about them finding out about the weed.

All you have to do is call them, inform them of where its happening, and whats going on. They will send out someone to go retrieve the cat, and they will never, tell anyone that it was you who turned it in. You dont even have to tell them your name or anything.

I really hope that you help this animal! T_T i love cats!

Good luck,

~Melissa~
