hannahd answered Friday July 21 2006, 8:09 pm: 1. It's not exactly always true, but it is possible. You're not supposed to leave one in for more than 8 hours or so. You don't automatically get TSS after 8 hrs is up because most girls leave it in much longer & still are fine. Your risk is just much higher the longer you leave it in. So, it is fine to leave it in while you sleep. Just as long as you use a new one right before you go to bed.
2. TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) - basically it's when bacteria grows & you can end up getting a high tempterature, cramps, & vomiting.
3. Again, by bacteria/leaving a tampon in for too long.
4. It is life threatening, but rare for it to get that serious unless it's ignored/untreated. If you're ever showing serious symptoms, go to the hospital right away. [ hannahd's advice column | Ask hannahd A Question ]
Siren_Cytherea answered Friday July 21 2006, 2:45 pm: Myth.
I sleep in tampons all the time - but I never get more than 9 hours of sleep anyway, and you're supposed to be able to leave them in for about 8 or 9 hours.
The infection I believe you're thinking about is TSS - Toxic Shock Syndrome, and it's characterized by fevers, vomiting, and other icky symptoms. Lol. It's pretty serious. Also, it's not just sleeping in tampons that can cause it, it's leaving them in for more than 8 or 9 hours. (Though I've done that a couple of times and I'm still fine)
BUT.
I read somewhere that TSS was caused by a certain brand of tampons with some sort of gel in them, and now they put it on all the tampons just as a warning. I'm not sure how accurate that is, but I've never had a problem. Anyway, bacteria can grow in any warm, moist place - not to make you paranoid, but it can.
Just time yourself for 8 hours or so and you'll be safe.

chly1chly answered Friday July 21 2006, 12:47 pm: fact
the infection is Toxic Shock Syndrome
Your body relizes there is something forienge in it and you get all fevery and sick
You can die,
But this infection is not at all probable, you can sleep in a tampon and be perfactly fine, but the tampon companies have to put the warning on the box in order to the be sewed. People have forgoten and left tampons in for a week and been fine [ chly1chly's advice column | Ask chly1chly A Question ]

3. if you keep your tampon in for longer than 8 hours, bacteria will start forming and cause this disease

DancinCutie08 answered Friday July 21 2006, 11:16 am: you run the risk of TTS (toxic shock syndrome)
I am not exactly sure the cause of this besides it has to do with the bacteria in the tampon but it causes high fevers (and flu like syntoms) and can lead to death. Once you wear a tampon over 6 hours the risk of this skyrockets
Deetra answered Friday July 21 2006, 10:34 am: 1:Kind of both (you can get the infection but its very unlikely just sleep in a new tampon.)
2:TSS Toxic Shock Syndrom (Its effects are fainting, dizzness, high fever and others. just read ur tampon box)
3:No ones sure but they think its the cotton and other stuff in the tampon itself)
4: If treated there is a cure but if not treated its fatal causing death. However it is not a very common infection so try not to worry.
orphans answered Friday July 21 2006, 7:46 am: 1) fact. you can get TSS by it, but thats only fi you keep it in for MORE than 8 hours.
2) TSS -- toxic shock syndrome
3) its caused by something staying in to long, such as a tampon
4) its very serious! if you get it, there is a chance that you will die, and if you dont, you will be week and wont be able to walk or do much other than just lie in bed for months-years!!

SHELBYcrunkpants answered Friday July 21 2006, 4:03 am: 1. Fact. If you sleep in a tampon you are having one in for 9 hours about so you do have the chance of getting an infection although its very rare.
2. TSS aka Toxic Shock Syndrome.
3. Leaving a tampon in for more than at the most eight hours.
4. Pretty serious. Chance of death. [ SHELBYcrunkpants's advice column | Ask SHELBYcrunkpants A Question ]
countriebabe08 answered Friday July 21 2006, 3:04 am: Well, for one thing, It's not if you sleep with one in. You're just not supposed to have one in for more than 8 hours. There is an infection you can get, but it is very rare. it's called toxic shock syndrome, tss for short. I'm not exactly sure what it's caused by, but if not treated right away, it can end in death. Just read any instruction paper thingie that comes in any tampon box and it tells you all the warnings and symptoms and about it and stuff. Hope I helped.
