Doctors recommend it but yet and still so many Americans turn they nose up at! Why do you think so?

Or, like in my sister-in-law's case, her kids had to drink formula with iron because they needed the extra iron that she couldn't provide from breast milk.
Or it could be that so many women choose to have careers, and are only allowed leave from work for a short period of time, so they don't have a lot of extra time for breast feeding all of the time.
I will be having a baby in March, and I hope to be able to breast feed my child, because I know that when mothers breast feed, they bond with their children better. [ Brandi_S's advice column | Ask Brandi_S A Question ]

I think that doctors change what they recommend all of the time and we should listen to what we feel inside instead of doctors and books. However, I realize that "breast is best" and I don't think that will ever change. I would rather a mother feed her baby formula than breastfeed while eating the wrong things, taking pain medicines, etc.
I'm on my third child and am thinking about breastfeeding, but in general people that breastfeed act so STUCK UP that I don't know if I want to be categorized with them. They think they are better, that their kids are smarter (which isn't true, because I have two ff kids that are very intelligent), etc etc. It just gets annoying to see so many arrogant women.
Nallie answered Friday July 21 2006, 10:23 pm: I think there are many North Americans that accept breastfeeding as well. My opinion is that if a woman wants to breastfeed she should, and if she doesn't she shouldn't have to feel guilty for not doing so.
Those that don't want to, voice many reasons for not doing so. 1. Pumping at work is not always convienent. 2. They are modest and don't want to risk exposing their breasts in public. 3. It is easier for Dad or a sitter to feed the baby from a bottle (without pumping) 4. Some Moms may attempt to do so but they don't have a wonderful let down reflex. 5. Some babies especially premies have trouble suckling, and a breast is harder work therefore they burn more calories and don't gain weight as quickly, or even lose weight.
6. The Mom would have to watch her diet and not consume foods that may upset the baby's tummy.

I also think that some people are just not educated enough as to the benefits and think its more about a woman exposing themselves then a woman nurishing her child.
By breast feeding my child I am currently ensuring that she is protected against viruses and that she is recieving the absolute best start that I can give her. This is not to say that people who chose not to breast feed are depriving their children its a very personal choice. I think that it also depends where you live I am not sure about the States but here in Canada as a new mother the government allows me to take a full year off (they pay me 80% of my salary) so it's easier for me then for someone who has to return to work a month later.
karenR answered Thursday July 20 2006, 8:01 pm: I think it is probably a convenience thing.
Unfortunately not many woman stay home and raise their kids anymore. They go back to work within weeks of having their babies. They do make breast pumps, but then that's just one more chore.
There are Some who are just not able because of medical reasons. Some just don't make enough milk to feed the baby.
bettyboopstr answered Thursday July 20 2006, 7:26 pm: I feel that many people turn their noses because of the exposure of the breast. Let's not forget the Timberlake-Jackson boobie incident. Yes, it's good for the baby but these days there are great formulas and the dad's need to bond too. Think of it this way, you already gave birth why torture your body further with possible humiliation or even scabs on the breasts from the infant sucking too hard. I pesonally would not breast feed and would not humiliate anyone for doing so but for pete's sake--If I do see a boobie, I will puke!! So please, if you are going to breastfeed, COVER IT UP!! (or fill the bottle before going out in public) [ bettyboopstr's advice column | Ask bettyboopstr A Question ]
