I had a shih tzu for at least 15 years. I was told he was "old" when I adopted him. So they live good long lives. :)

I adopted a stray Shih Tzu while still living at home with my parents in 1979. The vet guessed he was about two years old. He died in 1994 at 17 years old. The amazing thing is...now-a-days we are told to feed dogs the expensive food. He ate regular purina dog chow! He didn't suffer with arthritis, blindness or deafness and lived an active life right up until the day he died.

I have a Shih Tzu actually and my last one died at 13.The vet said it was a pretty good age for her. They usually live up to around 14-15 years it all depends on how heathly and how well taken care they are.

The concern and fear of losing a much-loved pet usually motivates this question. Dogs in general, often survive into their late teens. All of this of course depends on good health, which in turn is related to diet, exercise and general care. And just FYI, Most people believe that a year in a dog's life equals seven years of a human's life. Recent medical studies prove this theory wrong.
A dog at:
2 years = a 24-year-old adult

4 years = a 32-year-old adult

6 years = a 40-year-old adult

8 years = a 48-year-old adult

10 years = a 56-year old adult

14 years = a 72-year-old senior

18 years = a 91-year-old senior

Hope I helped*

it really depends on how well the dog is kept, its family background and what not. most little dogs live anywhere from 8-12 years but i've known dogs that have been as old as 18.

betterthanyou_X3 answered Wednesday July 5 2006, 10:03 pm:
thelaura, I think the question was about shih tzus not humans. But anyway, if you look it up on google, it says from 12-15 years. 12 dog years is 61 in human years and 15 is 73 in human years.

Some people say that for every human year, it's 7 dog years but apparently that's not true...look at the second site I put on here.
