If the clothes from abercrombie are so...thin....why do they cost so much?
And I don't want this to sound mean, but why do so many people buy their clothes there, just for them to shrink in the laundry?
DangerWench answered Friday June 30 2006, 1:00 am: ...
Do you *really* want to know?
If you can find a book called "The Wastemakers" by Vance Packard, you should read it, and you will understand.
The following info on that book is something DangerNerd wrote recently, so I'm quoting him here:
"Published in 1960, it details the change from durable goods to things that aren't worth carrying home.
In this book he tells what he thinks the future would be like unless someone brought the advertising moguls down to Earth... everything he said would happen, happened.
The thing reads like prophecy. He said we would end up with a generation of pure-bred consumers. Young people who are unaware that they even have a function outside of buying whatever they are told to buy.
Does this sound familiar?
He also indicated that when they had kids, that would be it for us as a nation. With no skilled workers, we would have no productive industry.
Does this sound familiar?"
As he mentions, this book is about how business, advertising, and marketing is basically manipulating us to buy, buy, buy. Everything from planned obsolescence (deliberately manufacturing items of low quality so that people will have to go out and buy another when it breaks/wears out), to creating "fashion" so that people will stop using perfectly good items and buy yet more items in a different color/design/fashion, so as to be "in".
Think about it, if something you buy lasts a long time, you won't be buying another for a long time. They lose money if you don't buy.
If they can convince people that an item is "out of date" even though it still works/wears just fine, then people will go out and buy new things when they don't really need to. And they make lots and lots of money by brainwashing people this way.
It's actually pretty disgusting. Many people all over the world would love to have the things that we throw away as "unfashionable" or "out of style". It's a wasteful shame.
hit_rockbottom answered Saturday June 24 2006, 10:37 am: well the reson abercrombie clothes are so small is because only people who are ritch can aford them and they are probley cheer leaders or preps who are the size or second grades.not to be mean or anything. poetqueen answered Friday June 23 2006, 8:36 pm: lol i know exactly what you mean! and i totally agree, thats why i dont shop there, its funny how clothes from like old navy and kohls, gap, aeropostale etc. cost less but are more durable! the reason its so expensive is because of the brand tho, and its popularity. american eagle is a bit better but still sorta iffy sometimes. fortunately there are cami's for the ultra thin clothes so you can wear those under and you feel like your actually wearing somethin! dont worry about abercrombie just shop at different stores and let the idiots who want to buy it buy it! pootietang answered Friday June 23 2006, 7:10 pm: To tell you the truth, I used to shop there (their prices are so ridiculously high now). Why? Because I liked the clothes. Not because all the cool people wore them. Of course, it was a plus that everyone else likes Abercrombie, but that is not the main reason I USED to go there.
My suggestion: go to Aeropostale! I went there today and I am recommending it wherever I go. I got a collared shirt with the logo for $13 (usually $30+ at Abercrombie) and a fit hat for $6 (usually $15+ at Abercrombie)! My sister got a ton of cool collar shirts there for $10 each! Graphic tees are 2 for $20!!
So, I dropped Abercrombie because of the prices. It really wasn't worth it. Aeropostale, however, is. Clothes shrink in the laundry regardless of where they're from.
fabulous11 answered Friday June 23 2006, 3:18 pm: I would think that it costs more just because its a name brand. People buy clothes there cause they like them and i guess its just a popular store to shop at so everyone wants to go there.
pazyfelicidad answered Friday June 23 2006, 1:26 pm: I don't know much about Abercrombie, but I know that people buy things just for the name brand. The quality might be just the same as something cheaper, but because the demand is high for it....people are willing to pay more for it if it means they will fit in. And that is how big corporations make big money. [ pazyfelicidad's advice column | Ask pazyfelicidad A Question ]
babiigirl answered Friday June 23 2006, 11:55 am: I completely agree with you. Yes the clothes are nice and they may last a while but its the biggest waste of money ever. Abercrombie is pretty much a teenager stores and you know most of those teens either get the money from there parents or they go and blow their entire paycheck. I dont know the quality or if they shirnk or not because i dont wear them. BUt alot of teenagers wear abecrombie because its the Style thats "in".
kim-
And for the person below me. I dont wear abercrombie or do i shop in the mall alot but the clothes i wear are not trahy what so ever. But thanks for such a rude comment. [ babiigirl's advice column | Ask babiigirl A Question ]
mn731 answered Friday June 23 2006, 11:31 am: abercrombie clothes is GOOD QUALITY. seriously, they last for a longgg time. i'm not even kidding. people buy their clothes because it's cute-they are really durable. I always think..you pay for the quality--and i know A LOT of people hate this store--but it actually isn't so bad. all of my clothes there have NEVER ripped--and the "paper thin" shirts are sheer--and they make those EVERYWHERE. also, ALLLL clothes shrink in the laundry eventually--so idk why you're just applying this to abercrombie.
XxEmo_HelpxX answered Friday June 23 2006, 11:30 am: Well in my opinion, they probably raise the prices so people will buy it thinking it's cool. Everyone wants expensive clothes so they can look rich. Personally, I think it's wrong. Their prices can run high sometimes and their clothes ARE very thin. It could be to stay cool, OR it could be that they then have more material to make more expensive clothes.
lastlyMe answered Friday June 23 2006, 11:27 am: you r totally completely right!!
thus i do not buy name brands (except this one pair of capri's my mom bought me that are Ralph Lauren)
i hate name brands. their expensive, everyone owns them, they are made cheaply, and yes as you said they shrink.
cheburashka answered Friday June 23 2006, 11:16 am: because clothes cost is not determined by how much they weight, but by their design, how fashionable they look, how many people worked on them, how long it took to make them, popularity of the brand, and so on. abercrombie clothes are popular, considered quite fashionable, and the fabric of high quality. however, i'm not saying that they're not overpriced - people buy them ebcause they are considered popular. adrifacee answered Friday June 23 2006, 10:52 am: Its their style. I actually wear pac sun and things like that, im more of a skater type person. They dont necasarrily shrink, they just stay the same. But yeas, i agree they do become quite thin :) [ adrifacee's advice column | Ask adrifacee A Question ]
soendearing answered Friday June 23 2006, 10:41 am: Because it's the style, I don't wear Abercrombie because i'm "skater." But i used to be preppy like 3 years ago, i never shopped there because it was too expensive, but they go there because they like the clothes, and they probably have the latest trends (ripped jeans and so forth) and people are willing to pay that much, so they make their prices higher so they make more money off of things that are worth maybe, 15-20$ and pay 30-40$ for it. They make a huge profit between what it's worth, and what they accually get.
DancinCutie08 answered Friday June 23 2006, 10:37 am: personally i buy clothes from there because of the fit. i am short and semi skinny so sometimes its hard to find nice tigheter fitting clothes. Their shirts always have a nice tight fit on me and are longer which i like. Also alot of there clothes are different from other stores and you won't find anything like it anywhere else.
and they cost alot because they are popular and people are willing to pay that. the same reason why a little coach bag is $200.
and i have never had a shrinking problem with their clothes. Acually for being 100% cotton they really don't shrink at all. I've had clothes from cheaper places like aeropostal shrink on me way more.
I think although they appear think you really are paying for quality. I mean i got a tank top there last week for $15 and it have a very cool pattern of knit to it. Something that even with a machine would have been a timely process. [ DancinCutie08's advice column | Ask DancinCutie08 A Question ]
kallan answered Friday June 23 2006, 10:01 am: They cost so much pretty much because the company can do that. If the clothes are "in" than some people will spend almost anything to have them. So people buy the clothes even though they shrink. because the people that buy them shrink too! ok, that was mean, but.. it happens.. so yeah... i really don't know the apeal of Abercrombie.... thewonderchef answered Wednesday June 21 2006, 9:49 pm: The clothes are so thin because they use low quality fabrics and they cost more because the people at abercrombie are greedy. People shop there because abercrombie is popular at this point in time. [ thewonderchef's advice column | Ask thewonderchef A Question ]
clearlypink428 answered Wednesday June 21 2006, 3:39 pm: its all about the label. this is kind of an odd question. - but im willing to tell you just how it is. many teens are in denial about 'the popularity game'- in all reality- people are shallow- point of the matter is that they are going to expect you to dress nyce to be popular. BUT- it doesnt always work that way. things are evolving- and times are changing. i never buy designer clothes unless i get them at a price that i would be willing to pay- or a price that is the same as i could get it at fashion bug, or dots. like, i found a 'squeeze' pair of jeans and a 'bongo' pair of jeans for 10 dollars a piece at jcpenney- so you bet i bought em. i think its jsut a matter of if you like spending loads of money on one item of clothing. im a true bargain hunter- i always sed tht even if i became a milionaire- id still shop the way i do- because i get more for my money. betterthanyou_X3 answered Wednesday June 21 2006, 3:24 pm: Actually, it's only some of Abercrombie's knits that are thin. Their polos are not and their tees are actually pretty thick. And most of their clothes are pre-shrunk and don't shrink when you dry them. Their clothes are pretty good quality.
They cost so much because it aims for the upper middle class teens and college student. If you like their clothes and have the money, then shop there. If you don't, then don't shop there.
Just fyi though, if you look at American Eagle's clothes, they're the ones that have the extremely thin material. Almost all of their girl tees are see through that's why I don't shop there anymore. haha [ betterthanyou_X3's advice column | Ask betterthanyou_X3 A Question ]
kristen22 answered Wednesday June 21 2006, 3:19 pm: Abercrombie clothes are so thin because they have little children working for a few cents a day making these clothes, and are given poor materials to work with.
1.) In 2003, the abercrombie near my house was sued and shutdown. Why? The people working there would not allow an african amercian girl to work at a cash register because they needed to portray an 'Amercian' look.My friend told me about this, it's horrible. I was shocked. Abercrombie has been sued several times and has reportingly payed $50 milliion in one case.
2.) Abercrombie uses child labor, incase you don't know already, it's illegal, and they only pay children a few cents an hour.
3.) T-shirts have had rascist slogans like: "Wong Brother Laundry Service - Two Wongs Can Make it White" and included a picture of two men with slanted eyes and conical hats. I am just so against racism, and all abercrombie is doing is promoting it.
3.) Abercrombie was selling thongs in Abercrombie Kids. Thongs are okay for us, but I wouldn't want my little sister who is 8 and who shops there to be wearing one. I mean, it's like they are promoting sex and sluttyness. I don't know about you, but I don't want my sister to think that's okay for her to buy one since they are in her department, and grow up to be slutty.
4.) Mike Jefferies, the CEO of abercrombie, has said along these lines, that if you are fat, this store is not for you. I see fat people being made fun of every day, and it really upsets me. Being shut out of a store just because of a persons weight must make them feel so self concious, and then, they might become anorexic or belimic.
5.) It is obvious they are marketing to teens and it is sick to think they are using sex to do it. They even had porn in the christmas catlog. No prices, no clothes.
People who shop from Abercrombie apperently do not know what is REALLY going on with that company and if people want to support a company that are against black women, against overweight teens and adults and are 100% for little kids wearing thongs then by all means...But I however, will not. Props for you for not shopping there either, regardless of the reason. [ kristen22's advice column | Ask kristen22 A Question ]
