I've been singing for about 7 years now, and I think it's time I started taking voice lessons. My mom insists that I have no natural talent. She's only heard me once, and at the time, I was so nervous that I didn't sound good. My mom said that if I had natural talent, then it would show up when I was a little kid. However, my choir teacher tells me I'm an incredible singer, and she's the type that never lies to make someone feel good. When I was a little kid, my chest voice wasn't so great and I didn't know how to use my head voice. I'm 13 right now, and a mezzo-soprano (though I have almost a three octave range). So do you have to be talented as a little kid to be a talented singer?

dont take this badly but i really do think you shouldnt listen to your mom. Talent comes at any age. When i was younger i really wasnt good at sports and when i got the opurtuinity to be on a travel soccer team my mom thought it was a horrible idea and that it was a waste of money, but i really liked soccer and everyoen told me i was good at it..so i tried without listening to me mom and i really did like it. So keep practicing and i really do think you can become good if you try! stick to your thoughts!
sincerly,

Pheobe answered Wednesday June 14 2006, 7:09 am: you in no way need to have "amazing talent" as a kid in order to sing well as a teenager - and if you have a three octave range at 13 ... then yoiu have pretty good talent as it is - and your still a kid ... - take voice lessons and hone your talent ... NO OFFENSE but it sounds like your mom is kinda ...putting you down for no reason ... i have this problem too. I always sounf terrible for my mom - shes my worst critic - but i've learned to ignore it. Its just one of those things that comes with age. -
I'll look foward to buying a CD with your name on it someday - good luck
Igotamonopoly answered Tuesday June 13 2006, 4:44 pm: I, too, am a singer and also a vocal coach. Don't let my age deceive you. I started young.
If you are in choir, there isn't much else voice lessons will do. A voice lesson is probably a lot like your choir class, except for the fact that it's one-on-one. Your teacher should be happy to help you outside of class, anyway. But I digress.
No, you don't have to be talented as a little kid to become a talented singer. While this is often true in acting and modeling, it is not so in the music industry. Vocal lessons (or choir classes) often teach you about pitch, intonation, etc. This can help you infinitely.
If your choir teacher really likes your voice, ask her for a solo song (I mean a song with a solo in it.) and audition for the solo. That should convince your mom, eh?
AuntieEm answered Tuesday June 13 2006, 3:27 pm: no, you dont have to be talented as a little kid
and whether the talent is natural, or taught it doesnt matter if you are that good
sing for your mom
or just sing
in the car whatever
have her hear you
lilly_pads79 answered Tuesday June 13 2006, 3:18 pm: I don't think you have to be talentd as a little kid because your voice changes and so do your vocal ranges. Also when your a little kid you don't know how to use your voice as to show case it. Hope for the best!
Cj answered Tuesday June 13 2006, 3:15 pm: Nope. non at all.
In a sense you are still young, so you can learn. ANd maybe you really are a talented singer. SO long as you put enough work into it, you can learn, and be good. The past has little to do with what the future could store. [ Cj's advice column | Ask Cj A Question ]

mmmmmmm answered Tuesday June 13 2006, 2:40 pm: no, as you grow up, you learn and you realize that you have talent! ask your choir teacher if she can help you more with your singing!
OHilovetravis answered Tuesday June 13 2006, 2:03 pm: You dont have to be TALENTED as a little kid just to be a talented singer. That is like saying you have to be talented as a little kid to clean your room in order to be a talented cleaner in the future? Ha make sence!? Anyway I think if your mom doesn't think you have any natural talent it shouldn't matter! If you feel you do an if your teacher gives you the pride to feel as if you have a talented voice at heart then I think that explains it all. Just make sure it is what you want to do, an pursue in life an don't let nagativity of others let you not pursue your dreams!
cookierat123 answered Tuesday June 13 2006, 2:01 pm: of course not. as you get older your voice changes. when i was little i had a high pitched voice that bugged the crap out of everyone and now my voice is lower than that. so now its easier for me to sing. your voice probablly just changed. and if your teacher says that your a great singer then im guessing you really are. NyadesRoadGhost answered Tuesday June 13 2006, 1:55 pm: I'm a singer, and I've been taking private voice lessons for about 4 years. I started when I was 12. I've always been singing, but only when I began my voice-lessons did I learn how to perfect my pitch and such. I would definatley start with voice lessons. Some people are born with the talent, yes, but you'll find that usually singers didn't start sounding that great until they did start lessons. Since your mom has only heard you once, I would side with your choir teacher- they're professionals when it comes to this. Good luck!
