I run track and my shins are starting to bother me. I have a big track meet tomorrow and I really need some help on wha I need to do to help soothe them. Thank you in advance
cowgrl answered Monday April 3 2006, 12:26 pm: you probably have shin splint. take a week off or soo and let them rest, also, at walgreens they might have a item that will help
MikeCFT answered Sunday April 2 2006, 11:48 am: I feel for you because these suck.
Try contrast baths- putting your leg into a pool of hot water for 5 minutes, then taking it out and putting ice on it for another 5 minutes and repeat this cycle until about a half hour has gone by. [ MikeCFT's advice column | Ask MikeCFT A Question ]

twistedsister17 answered Friday March 31 2006, 7:05 pm: Try using Icy Hot [cream] I find that it always helps me when a muscle hurts. You can even buy these neat Icy Hot Braces, that can go around your shin or arm. Also drink lots of water, because that will help. Take some Tylenol which may help too. Soak them in hot water or a heat pad, or cool them off with some cool water or ice.
You might want to even wear a brace for a while. You can buy them at most grocery/drug stores. Like when people have a sore wrist, they can buy wrist braces. I think you can get them for your leg too.
ForfeitYourDream answered Friday March 31 2006, 7:01 pm: Mmmmm fun stuff, eh? Heat should sooth them a bit, but there's no real CURE to shin splints.
If your shoes don't fit right, you can get them as well. Things as simple as not stretching properly will trigger these.
Taping your shins [i know, weird, but I do it for field hockey running and it works perfectly] will prevent it from happening as well. Simply wrap splint tape horizontally around your shins [like a mummy!] a few vertically placed peices across the top will help as well.
xEVYx answered Friday March 31 2006, 6:55 pm: shin splints are a bitch
theres not really anything you can do until they heal. just keep ice on them and stay off of them as much as you can
Itz_your_luckee_day answered Friday March 31 2006, 6:19 pm: it looks like you have some great answers first of all but if you need a little something else...
my physical therapist took lotion (his was heated but w/e) and rubbed it on my calf and shin.. then take your thumb and find where your shin bone stops and you can feel your calf on the INSIDE of your leg.. with the lotion follow that "break" (the 'groove' between the bone and muscle) all the way down to your foot and then back up to your knee.. keep massaging this area with the lotion up and down at least 10 times
then do the SAME thing on the OUTSIDE of your shin bone.. ((this "groove" between the muscle and bone is more on top of your leg)) do it 10 times and then do the other leg.. i know this was confusing but if you try it with pushing down hard enough as you massage your leg, it will definitely feel looser when you're done
sizzlinmandolin answered Friday March 31 2006, 5:28 pm: I've had them before so I can help you! The best thing you can do is stretch them and ice them. Fill dixie cups with water and freeze them. Then rub your shins with the ice in a circular motion. To stretch, stand on the step of a staircase with a railing. Stand on your toes and let your heels hang off of the step. Go up and down on your toes somewhat slowly. Another stretch worked very well for me. Kneel on one knee then lean all the way back so that you are lying on the ground with your foot under your butt. These stretches were given to me by a doctor when I had shinsplints so you know they're good. I hope that your shinsplints go away soon they can really hurt. Let your coach know that your shins hurt. Try not to do too much jumping and when you run at practice, ask your coach if you can run on the grass on the inside of the track. Shinsplints are caused by the constant pounding of your feet on hard surfaces so the grass will reduce that a little. If it's possible, running a little slower and a little less will help too. Good luck! [ sizzlinmandolin's advice column | Ask sizzlinmandolin A Question ]
xomissnoeitallox answered Friday March 31 2006, 5:26 pm: you should just stay off them for a while. because running does mess up your shins and ankles.
soccerplayer5674 answered Friday March 31 2006, 5:12 pm: What you have are shin splints, a lot of people get them when you first start running, they will go away in a matter of time but theres no real way to "soothe them" sry i know it sucks i run track too but they will go away [ soccerplayer5674's advice column | Ask soccerplayer5674 A Question ]
Cspinoza1 answered Friday March 31 2006, 5:12 pm: Dear shins,
You have shin splints, hurt like hell when you run in that condition. Advil works great and ice them over night, and in the morning before you run put light pressure on your shins.
