Question Posted Saturday February 11 2006, 4:53 pm
We don't need religion. Hear me out. If Jesus were to come down from Hevan and say "I am the son of God" and showed us all of is water to wine stuff, scientist could test it and then Christianity would become a science and all other religions would be be proven wrong and therefore not be religions.
That was my little prologue, here is my question Is it possible that our societies have reached a point in which we can admit there is no need for religion and have good morals without a book or God(s) to tell us what they are?
Religion is about faith, not science. We have absolutely not reached a point where no one needs religion. If he had, would there be so many churches, temples, mosques, and other places or worship around the world? Would people be obsessively religious? Would people advertise their religions by wearing cross necklaces, etc.?
I must say the above things would probably not be true, and they are.
redninja answered Thursday March 2 2006, 1:43 am: ok religion in my opinion is still needed in a way, most of our societies moral guidelines are baed on religions and thier moral code, luckily these things have changed with the time for the most part, but religion isnt not really nessisary, it is just another option, if soem one is in a rough spot in thier life or loses a loved one religion is often a very good place for support nad re-assurance. Science will one day pove most things that religion tries to explian. [ redninja's advice column | Ask redninja A Question ]
KaladaLeigh answered Saturday February 18 2006, 6:44 pm: You are absolutely right.
You don't need a religion, you don't need to go to church, you don't need to try to be a saint.
Mousetower answered Sunday February 12 2006, 6:10 pm: If you look at it, science fills the role of religion for most people these days.
In the same way as religion, it offers answers in an unpredictable world. It pomises to make you live longer, it explains why we are here, and it offers a system of dos and donts that will result in your prolonged wellbeing.
It seems that, on the face of it, these answers are researched through physical phenomin, but have you ever seen an atom a virus or a vitamine?
The truth is that you beleive in these things because you have been told about them and because they offer you a way to understand the world. It's not much different to believing that God is responsible for it all, really. The only difference is that you call your priests scientists.
I'm not a religious guy, but I would urge you to analyze everything that you hear, regardless of the catagory that you put that information under in you head.
diakonos answered Sunday February 12 2006, 2:12 pm: I was having a discussion with a friend one day and he said, " ya know, science is winning." I looked at him asking, "winning what?" For some reason, many people see science and religion in some kind of reality show competing head to head to see which one will come out on top...
"Somehow, the mere fact of social and technological complexity overwhelms the presumptive simplicity of old-fashioned Christianity, as if human beings were ruminating animals without a care in the world before the advent of cellular phones and cable TV."
where does this spirit of competition come from? In fact, faith and reason go hand in hand... that is large reason why religion is still here, becuase it makes sense. The quote was taken from an exrememly good article, which, if you are truly in pursuit of understanding this question, I hope you may take some time to read:
Showtime answered Saturday February 11 2006, 9:23 pm: Brilliant QUESTION!!! I applaud you for you search for the question of WHo am I? Where did I come from? and where am I going? Beautiful. I have an equally beautiful answer but first.
I think that you are missing the mark just a tad abou the whole miracles thing and the true reason that Jesus came. He did not come to do miracles. He only did miracles so that people would believe that He is God in the Flesh who will be given over to death so that he could free us from it. He became man so that man could become like God. That is he became mortal so that man could become immortal. But that is besides the point. Your question was why isnt natural law Good enough and why should religion be put to the way side.
Well because if I dont belive that man is created in the image and likeness of God and he is just a creature with no eternal destiny and no seed of glory within him then I will treat him like just a creature. I will treat him like I treat my cow. I will be nice for now but if I have to I will kill him and eat him he is just a cow. I will be nice to my mother but if I have to she is just a creature and I can kill her if she gets in the way of my happiness.
We would have to put society as the ultimate Good because our morals would be based on what is fair and good for the society. So like Hitler, Marx, and other Socialists and communists who put society as number one and people where just parts to make that society work they could easily kill people for the sake of making society work or if they got in there way or if they just didnt like you.
BUT BIG OLE BUTT!
IF man is greater than just an ant and not just because we are smarter, but because We are made in the image and likeness of God. If that despair that we feel in our Heart when we think of death as complete nothingness is because man was made for eternal bliss. That feeling we get at the happiest moment of our life and we realize it still could have been a little more perfect or when you realize that the glory of winning the olympics or a world series is over so fast. WE have that thirst in us that little despair telling us we were meant for an eternity of Complete Happiness. That we have to treat eachother as we are. Made in the image and likeness of God. How much more we treat a human when he has the dignity of God. Every great mass killing and trajedy even the Muslim terrorists is because they dont respect the dignity of Human life. That dignity is the driving force of True Christianity. In catholisicm We believe that Man in being created in the image of God gives great dignity but The very fact that God would become man to atone for the sins we have committed just shows how much greater dignity we have for being people. SO by God revealing himself in religion he reveals man to himself. You could never get rid of religion.
You know why
Because people Have been trying to kill religion for 2000 years. It was legal to kill christians for 300 years after christ and on the 313 year Christianity took over the entire Roman empire. It spread from 12 men to Millions in 300 years. The catholic Church has been around and everybody has tried to kill her but christ said . The Gates of Hell shall not prevail.
. Science can't prove love, science can't prove ideas, science can't even prove science. But science does prove the greatness of God for having designed us so smart. Think abou it. The very fact that there is life on earth is statistically almost impossible its like then multiply that to the possibility of intelegent life on earth which is another 1 to 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 then to the very fact that we individuals are here online at this very moment multiply another trillion to that. Science would lean towards a Creator. Any gambling man would. Also the micro biologist, archealogoist and astronomist less than 1 percent are atheist because they appreciate the great design and complexity of life and the cosmos. 50% of all sociologist and psychologist are atheist because they are putting to much trust in the hands of the mindless masses and have a human explanation for all the evils of society. But so do I. God is good and being Good he gives people the freedom to choose their ends. It would be a Bad God that would force everybody to do Good and not let them choose. SO if you do Good you have merit for doing good, if you do bad you dont. BUt any way Good question.
twistedsister17 answered Saturday February 11 2006, 6:36 pm: Alot of people think that religion is important. Some people think that it is not. We are all enititled to our own opinion, and you cannot change other people's minds. I agree with what russian spy said. How can you interpret events that happened so long ago? I have watched many shows and read many books about the bible code and things like that. If you've ever watched any, there are scientists who study bibliography, who confirm that religions are real. There is even proof of it. You have a strong opinion, and surely you are a great person. I'm sure you have high expectations and morals for yourself, right? That could be similar to a religion.
So the bottom line is, people are going to believe what they want to believe no matter what.I have to say, for myself, that I do not go to church. I believe in God, but I do not worship him in groups. To me, religion is more of a personal thing.
You may have strong beliefs about religion, but please be respective that other people take great pride in their religion.
eternitysofbliss answered Saturday February 11 2006, 6:34 pm: Albert Einstein once said "Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind."
I answered with this to show you, there is no need for science or for religion. We live in a universe with so many paradoxal equations and so much unknow its not the judgement of society to say what is and isnt. You as a person may believe in antidepressants, but i belive society has become to weak to deal with issues. A religion is a personal belief as can be said for science. Can you prove math beyond the labels you give it? Can you prove faith cant manifest? Can you prove the bible wasnt made for mass manipulation? No there are so many uncertainties.
I believe you have some errors in your statements. If you ask logic to prove that logic is logical, the only answer you can come up with is that it makes sense, which contridicts itself. Our universe is self contridicting.
Religion is nessasary, though you may not relize it. And im going out on this note:
Religion is as needed as Emotions.
And a final quote from einstein "My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble mind." [ eternitysofbliss's advice column | Ask eternitysofbliss A Question ]
Just_ask_Danni answered Saturday February 11 2006, 6:02 pm: Well I think that we do need religion. Don't get me wrong cuz we all have freedom of speech. But I think that our society very well could have reached that point. But scientist take away things and make it seem as if evolution is the cause. Man did not come from a monkey. There was a huge flood which flooded the whole earth. There was dinosaurs but they didn't die off cuz of a stupid meteor shower! I mean they died from flooding. The only reason dinosaurs came to be is because man mixed bred animals. Ok I went off the subject but. If scientist don't know what the truth is then why do they make it like they do and call it "evolution"? The point is that I think there is some scientists that think they found some proof to the point that no one need religion. All in all it really doesn't matter what i think. hope this helps. russianspy1234 answered Saturday February 11 2006, 5:42 pm: how could science test something that happened 2000 years ago? do you think there is a little bit of that wine left somewhere and we jsut have to find it? religions are based on faith by definition and are seperate from science.
there is no need for religion, but there is also no need for candy, and so many of us love to have candy. in truth i do think we would be moral without religion, for the most part, but religion does give people something to hold on to, hope for an after life, and that is something we cannot have without religion, so no matter which religion is correct, or even if any of them are, it gives people hope and that is important.
