my cat

Question Posted Thursday November 10 2005, 3:07 pm

Ok, well I came home from school today and found my cat behind one of our landscaping trees, so I called his name, and he kind of looked up, but didn't come, which was REALLY unusual, so I knew something was wrong. Well, I took him inside, and kind of checked him out, to see if he was ok. I think I found what's wrong: in his right ear, I can see a little blood, and there's also a bit of dried blood below his ears on his fur. When I tried to touch it, he flinched, but when I touched his other ear, he was fine. So I'm pretty sure it's his ear. But he won't eat or move much at all. Right now, he's behind the rocking chair in the corner, not really moving. I'm scared, because I've had him for about 9 years, and I recently lost a dog who was only 7, and I can't bear to lose my other pet. I'm thinking he either got in a fight or got attacked by another animal. (he's an outdoor cat). My question is, does anyone know what's wrong with him? Is it really bad that he hurt his ear? I'm taking my dog to the vet tomorrow to get her sutures (sp?) removed, should I take my cat too? I tried calling both my parents, but they didn't answer. I'm really scared, what should I do? Please help me.

Ok i would think he did get hurt by another animal i think it is bad but i am not sure go bring your cat with your dog because soemthing bad might have ahppened and the vet is going to have to look at it i say call and tell them that you are bringing your dog in and was wondering if the vet could also take a look at your cats ear because it seems like it hurts him when i touch it because i found blood in his ear and on his fur but his other ear is fine. Just say if you cant fit me in with my cat while i have my dog do you have any suggestions to what i should do to help my cat i do not want to hurt him but i really dont want him to suffer anymore through his ear problem i think it is something where he got hurt by another animal but i am not sure

i would take the cat with you when you take the dog. Just to see if they can check it out. You cat might have an ear infection or something, i'm not really sure though.

I know how you must feel about this. One of my cats (deceased now) used to be like that. He's been in a fight and is probably scared of being attacked again. Try to get him to eat by giving him his favourite treat amd give him a couple of days to recover. If he's still acting strange in a week or so then you should definitely take him to the vet.

Fellow Pet Owner,

I know how concerned you must be. I'm sorry for your loss, dogs are very sweet animals, and make good companions.

I'm pretty sure your cat was attacked by another cat [he probably fought back, the little tiger ;)] and his ear got cut up. I don't think you'll need to take him to the vet, unless it becomes infected [it starts ozing puss, is greenish, swolen, extremely painful to the touch etc.], then you should rush him to the kittie ER.

In the meantime, try to make him comfortable. Offer him some cat food, water, and love on him. I would clean his ear and find the cut, and put a little Neosporin on the wound. If the wound is just surface (like a usual cat scratch is), just keep it clean and put some Neosporin on it to help it heal. However, if the wound is deep, still keep it clean and put Neosporin on it, but consult your parents on taking him to the vet.

Ask your parents to look at his ear when they get home, perhaps even consult the vet tomorrow when you see him/her. [Though bringing the cat probably won't be needed. Just take a few digital pictures - if you can - of the wound, and remember it in detail.]

He should be fine. He's probably really scared right now because he's older and has probably just been in a fight. I wouldn't worry too much about him. I have a three-year-old cat who, before we moved, got into fights alot. There was a cat who lived several blocks over who would come to our house. My cat hated that, and often I'd wake up hearing the cats hissing and crying at each other. When I brought her inside, I'd check her over for wounds, then make her comfortable and go back to sleep. She'd be a little skittish and shy, but would always snap out of it. I'm sure your cat will do the same.

Dear Cat,
Usually, just a scrape is nothing at all, but being so old, your cat is probably just taking it worse. Wait for your parents, they'll know what to do. Meanwhile, pet him, make him feel comfortable, he'll be feeling better in no time! He probably just got into a fight.
P.S. Sorry about your dog.
Sincerly,
Aunt M.

Ok, calm down hun. Cats a strange animals, they get in fights and their behaviour changes regularly. I think you should take your cat to the vets, only to be checked out - but please don't panic. You can tell your parents when they get back. Pay him a lot of attention and put some food near him, make sure he has something to eat. Your cat's ear must have been affected somehow in the fight and maybe the attacker really damaged it. Talk to your parents, take your cat along to the vets and don't worry too much!
