A lot of my friends smoke. This means that whenever I hang around with them they are smoking and they often offer me cigarettes. I have always said no because I have my priciples but recently I have been smoking with them. I found that it was quite relaxing and I liked it. I really don't want to do it anymore but I enjoy it and as my friends do it, it's tempting. How do I stop before I get too addicted?
lyDia_LoU answered Friday August 5 2005, 9:36 pm: Get some of that gum. Then hang out with different people. If the cigarettes are all around you then it will be practically impossible for you to stop.

Like at the movies. If one of your friends offers you a cigarette say no it might be hard but it's not worth it. It might be relaxing now but later in your life when your older you won't think so.

Quitting now will be much easier on your mental and physical health then waiting until later...you may even get to a point that even though you know smoking is bad for your health, you're too addicted to want to quit.
The only real answer here is 'willpower.' You can help your willpower by going online and doing some searches on the effects of smoking on your health. Once you see the pictures of what it does to your lungs, and read the stories of people who have/had lung cancer, that should help you remain strong.

ncblondie answered Wednesday August 3 2005, 3:03 pm: As a smoker who started when I was young, I know how hard it is to quit after you've been smoking for a while. I am trying to quit smoking now and here's a few things that I've found are helping.
1) Try not to be around other smokers. Most people trying to quit do better when they're not around smoke.
2) When you get the urge to smoke, distract yourself. Go for walks, exercise (believe me after a hard workout you have a hard time smoking), go play a game, etc.
3) Try sucking on a piece of hard candy or chewing gum when you get the urge. I had a friend tell me once that I had an oral fetish because they always saw me with something (a cigarette, candy, the tip of my pen, a lollipop, etc) in my mouth. Sucking on peppermints took care of the urge to have something in my mouth.
4) When someone offers you a cigarette, picture what it will do to your body after time.
5) Think of the cost of smoking. Cigarettes are expensive. When you get the urge to smoke, think about what else you can buy with that money.
6) If you're smoking because of stress in your life, try talking to someone or keeping a journal. Just getting the feelings out will help.
7) When you get the urge to smoke, take a 10 minute break and do something else. The urge to smoke usually passes in a few minutes whether you smoke or not. [ ncblondie's advice column | Ask ncblondie A Question ]
Emily88 answered Wednesday August 3 2005, 2:46 pm: it sounds as if you slightly already are addicted. you need to stop... now. it leads to so many bad and disgusting outcomes such as heart, lung, brain, or mouth cancer. you'll get disgusting coughs, your teeth and fingernails become yellow, your hair becomes brittle and you smell. nobody really wants to hang out with someone like that. there are plenty of things to do to stop from becomming addicted. you could chew gum or possibly straws whenever you feel a craving. if its starting to get to be something that chewing on things is not good enough, they always have things like patches or medications or even nicotine gum. another alternative is to ask your friends to please not smoke aorund you because you've told them before that your not very fond of smoking. if they are true friends, they will stop doing it around you. you need to stop smoking NOW before it gets any worse. i hope everything works out alright.
BumbleBee035 answered Wednesday August 3 2005, 2:40 pm: Smoking is stupid first of all, so remember that. Whenever you're around them and they offer you cigarettes, have some gum or something around to help ease the temptation. Also, say no and maybe try to help them stop too. It's so bad for you and I don't think you'd want your friends dying at an early age from smoking causes. [ BumbleBee035's advice column | Ask BumbleBee035 A Question ]

I have to say that trying it in the first place wasn't to bright if u didnt want to get addicted but i understadn peer pressure and I can see why you did it. This is the best advice I can give you to quit. say NO! so many people die of lung cancer and other types of diseases you get from smoking I know this for a fact my nana died of cancer and she was very very sick from smoking my grandfather who also smoked but wuit is now living with emphasema a disease that places water on the lungs and he isn't in the best shape. As much as you want a ciggarette just say no trust me the sooner you try to quit the easier its going to be. I don't mean to osund harsh but i dont want to see anyone go through what my nana went through. Its to painful

TheOldOne answered Wednesday August 3 2005, 1:16 pm: You just stop. There's no other way.
I mean, no one here is going to be able to come over when you're hanging out with your friends, and pull the cigarette out of your mouth, you know? There really isn't any magic way to quit.
I'm sure you know what smoking does to you. But at your age, it probably doesn't matter. Getting cancer in ten or twenty years, or having a massive heart attack...you might know intellectually that you're running that risk, you might even *believe* it. But you won't really feel it where it *counts*, in your gut, until it's too late.
Unfortunately when you're a teenager there's something in your brain that keeps telling you that you're immortal and invulnerable. It's a hell of a shock when you find out the truth...that you can be hurt, and you can die. Not off in some mythical far future, but SOON. Sooner than you think.
I'm old - that's why I call myself The Old One. But I can tell you that inside I feel almost EXACTLY the same as I did when I was your age. And I honestly can't BELIEVE how fast the time went. It goes faster and faster the older you get. I guarantee that you are going to be AMAZED at how quickly you reach 20, 30, 40, etc.
In ten or twenty or thirty years, I really don't think you want to be hearing a doctor say "I'm sorry, but it's inoperable. There's nothing more we can do", or "The damage to your heart is extensive - you're going to have to take it very easy from now on." (assuming you're alive to hear anything at all, of course).
If that happens, you'll hate your teen-age self and your friends like you've never hated anything before. But it will be too late to do anything about it. You'd give anything to have a time machine and go back to warn yourself...but that's not possible.
So, if you want to, consider this a warning by proxy from your future self: find a way to stop smoking. Not only for your own sake, but for your children, if you ever have any.
One more thing: I hope you don't have to give up your old friends in order to avoid smoking, but if it comes down to a choice between the two, I hope you'll do the smart thing.
You can find new friends a lot more easily than you can find new lungs or a new heart.
Teza answered Wednesday August 3 2005, 1:11 pm: Oh.. I've been through that. Smoking is bad!! Very bad! I used to think it was relaxing and everything and that it was good but psh.. no way. After I had all the lectures from my friends I had to stop lol. Now that I think of it its just gross. Tell your friends that you want to stop so when they are smoking that they shouldnt give you one. Your friends shouldnt of offered you them tho. lol.. well anyways you can get lung cancer and yellow teeth and for everything that you do you will want them. So try to stop right now. Keep yourself busy && try really hard to stop. Chew lots of gum and find other things that are just as relaxing. [ Teza's advice column | Ask Teza A Question ]
