My boyfriend and I are having a debate about whether or not sperm is still active when it hits the air. Sometimes after we have sex (we use a condum) sperm will be on me or him and he worries that it will travel into my vagina and make me pregnant. I've always heard that once sperm hits the air it's dead. Who's right?
Dr_Joseph answered Wednesday July 20 2005, 2:59 am: I don't belive that sperm dies on contact with air, that is just a myth.
Also it's not possible for sperm that is on you to travel by itself into you and inpregnate you.
Give your boyfriend a slap and send him back to human biology classes. [ Dr_Joseph's advice column | Ask Dr_Joseph A Question ]

AskAndy answered Monday July 18 2005, 2:57 am: the guy. sperm can hit the outside of the vagina open to air and swim into the fallopian tubes to hand out with the egg,but it dies in 3 days, so to be safe. don't do it often and use a condom always. ncblondie answered Sunday July 17 2005, 9:57 pm: He's right. Sperm generally remains active and able to impregnate you for around 48 hours. The best thing to do to prevent pregnancy is either for you to use some other form of birth control(birth control pill, the patch, etc) while he still uses a condom. Using a condom with spermicide (look at the label for nonoxynol-9) will also help. Making sure to clean up as soon as you finish having sex will help too.
HyperactiveMiss answered Sunday July 17 2005, 5:05 pm: He's right. It's not dead right away. Sperm are very determined little guys. If they are near your vagina, they CAN swim inside and you CAN get pregnant. Ever heard of sperm donations? If sperm died right away, why do we have sperm donations for couples?

Make sure he steps away before taking it off. Yhus avoiding you becoming in contact with the sperm. Hightly reducing the risk of unwanted pregnancy!
Hope i helped,
