Hey. I'm 13 years old and in 8th grade at the moment. Right now I'm registering for high school classes for next year. I'm definitely taking Latin 1. Since there aren't very many honors classes for freshmans, I think I want to take Spanish 1 also (it's not a honors class. I want to take it because I think I can use it a lot in the real world or w/e). My question is, do you think I should take 2 languages?
Thanks.

Don't take any class "just because its Honors" its the worst idea that there is. 99 times out of 100 you will hate a class if that’s the only reason why you take it. If you want to take both languages do it because you have a passion for both and are interesting in learning both. I took Latin and let me just say that it was EXTEREMLY helpful for the SAT's and by using what I learned from Latin I am able to make an educated guess about the meanings of words I don't know. However, I decided that Latin wasn’t for me so I stopped taking it. I ended up taking Japanese (which I love and am really passionate about but that’s not the point.) Taking two languages isn't easy (but isn’t impossible) and it isn't for everyone, but if you like both languages and are willing to work hard. I say that you take it. (I have a friend who takes 2 and studies other languages on her own. So it’s definitely doable.) On a side note, Latin will be really helpful with not only English but your Spanish too, because a lot of words are derived from Latin roots. Best of luck with your choice! clotito answered Tuesday April 19 2005, 10:16 pm: Yes, go for it. You can definitely do it. Though you will get some elements of the languages mixed up at first the younger you start learning a second language the easier it will be. Latin is great at helping you sound well-spoken and to understand the roots of other words, but Spanish is also a very important language to have some knowledge of in this modern world. Those are two great choices and I would go with both of them. Not to mention, that's going to look great on your college application. [ clotito's advice column | Ask clotito A Question ]
OrangeChikn answered Tuesday April 19 2005, 7:21 pm: That might be kind of stressful if your not already fluent in one. I wouldn't but if your up for the challenge go ahead. Spanish will be used alot in the real world though.

Poppsie answered Tuesday April 19 2005, 12:48 pm: If you really want to learn the both langugages them take them both but if you do you need to work hard because learning two languages at the same time is going to be complicated, if you are going to work you should take them if you feel its going to help do the two. If you think its hard enough for one language like many people do you should obviously take only one.I have never done latin or spanish so i couldnt tell you which one is the easiest, but i hope i helped. Tell me how it goes by sending me an email to my in box or in the feedback. [ Poppsie's advice column | Ask Poppsie A Question ]
Karen answered Tuesday April 19 2005, 10:30 am: If you think you can work hard and be committed to learning both of these languages, then you should take two languages. You will get more credits and you will have more colleges to choose from in the future. Once you get into high school and take both of these languages and if you decide that you can't keep up with two of them, then choose which language you like the best and go from there. EJ47 answered Monday April 18 2005, 10:16 pm: Take spanish. Second best, and its easy. Plus you need at least 2 credits of foreign language to get into college, so you have to anyway. Spanish is a great language, and for your friends who dont take it, you can impress them =3
xplisit15 answered Monday April 18 2005, 9:34 pm: Hun, dont take latin! Its a dead language and borring as rocks. Take spanish and take it all through highschool. Its what im doing and im going to be in pre-ap spanish next year. Most people drop out after 2 years because its the requirement, but keep going with it and you might get noticed. mn731 answered Monday April 18 2005, 8:58 pm: If you feel that that it's what you want to do, then go ahead and take it! Also, consider the number of credits you'll recieve from all your classes. I think 2 languages will be rewarding in the end..but definetely hard during the year because it will be a lot of work. Right now, I'm taking Spanish 1 and it's really hard..just do what you feel is best for you..most likely..YES. :-d [ mn731's advice column | Ask mn731 A Question ]
dwarp answered Monday April 18 2005, 8:58 pm: Taking up two languages at the same time might be a little confusing. If you can, take Latin 1 your freshman year, and then when you become a sophomore, take Latin 2 and Spanish 1. That way you'll be able to use your basic knowledge of Latin in learning Spanish, but you won't get the two confused. (Trust me, I tried learning Greek and French at the same time, and it can get pretty confusing, even if the languages don't sound that much alike)Ultimately, follow what you think will be right for you, but there's my input on the decision. Freshman year can be a little overwhelming in itself, taking two languages might just complicate things a bit more. [ dwarp's advice column | Ask dwarp A Question ]

icey0990 answered Monday April 18 2005, 8:46 pm: Its going to take work, but if you feel up to it and your willing to commit to it, then yeah go for it!
