Question Posted Sunday April 17 2005, 10:34 am

I am a mother of four and none of my children will eat vegetables or fruit. The oldest is 13 and the youngest 7. I fed them vegetables and fruit in baby food as yound children, but they just don't like it now. I was the same as a child and so I didn't push them. However, while they're not unhealthy, I'd like them to start eating at least a bit more healthily, what with all this stuff going around about overweight kids and cholestrol, etc etc etc. So, my question is: does anyone have any recipies or ideas to make fruit and vegetables tasty and fun?
Also, my thirteen-year-old just got braces and can't eat anything hard for a few days, so I was wondering if it would be safe for to eat baby food? I know it has nothing added to it but I was just wondering if it was OK for a 13 year old to eat that and only that (obviously with drinks, and different varieties of the food) for three or four days?
Also, my friend has suggested using baby food or vegetable pureè as pasta sauces. Do you think this would work?
Thanks,
-Mum-To-Four

I'm te same way. I don't eat my vegetables, but I do get my 3 servings of fruit daily. My secret? Juice. i know that there's this infomercial out for the Jack LaLaine Power Juicer. you can makea juice with broccoli in it, just add watermelon and it tastes like watermelon. Maybe baby food, but the puree sounds disgusting, but it may work for your youngest child. Good luck!

Mum-To-Four -

I currently have braces too, and baby food although safe, probably wouldn't sound too appealing for a 13 year old! Try to feed her easy to chew and swallow things like soups, oatmeal, mashed potatoes, etc.

Here are some ideas for fruit and veggies:

Fruit:

-smoothies
-fruit cocktails (diced up fruits w/ interesting shapes with a mix of fruit juice and carbonated water)
-fruit parfait (layer yogurt [plain or flavored] and a mixture of their favorite fruits and top off with granola)
-fruit pancakes or crepes with little chocolate chips (have them make their own)
-jello jigglers with strawberries or preferred fruit

Veggies:

-vegetable soup (be creative and incorporate a variety of veggies and be sure to flavor well to appeal to their taste buds)
-roasted vegetables (rub with butter or olive oil, flavor with herbs and seasonings, top off with optional "toppings" such as parmesan cheese or bacon bits); have them on extra long kabob sticks and roast it over a fire or grill
-roasted corn on the cob is always a favorite (rub with herb butter, and top with parmesan cheese and roast in an open fire)
-mashed potatoes with yummy out-of-the-ordinary additions such as spinach-garlic-and herb
-old fashioned ants on a log (celery stick w/ peanut butter and raisins)
-make finger proportions of a variety of vegetables in interesting shapes and stick toothpicks in them for dipping in a dressing or fun dip

I hope this helps!

You could cut the vegetables and fruit into fun shapes like stars, hearts etc. You can make a fruit animal by taking a cucumber and sticking cocktail sticks into them with bits of fruit stuck on the end. Do they like spaghetti bolognaise? If so then make it for them but puree other vegetables into it like carrots, peas etc
I've heard of people making omelettes with vegetables in them such as mushrooms, courgette etc but she put a drop of organic food colouring into the mixture to turn them fun colours such as blue!!
You could use bribes-what is their favourite food? Or sweets? If you tell them to eat a certain fruit or amount of vegetables you can reward them with a sweet or magazine.
As for your daughter, I used to have braces and things like spaghetti, pasta etc is fine but don't let her eat things like apples. Cut down on fizzy drinks as well.

yea ts safe for her to eat baby food. but to get your other ones to eat fruit and veggies you can make them angel food cake and put whipped cream and strawberries and blueberries on it. you can get them to eat veggies by letting them dip carrots into ranch dressing and that will make them taste better. or you can put salt on carrots they might like that. you can also make them spaghetti with tomato sauce, that counts as a vegetable. and you can give them 100% juice. hope i helped!

If you can get her to eat the babyfood it certainly won't hurt her. The sauce idea would work, though it might be a little bland.

The easiest way I know of to get kids to eat veggies is to dice them up small and put them in other food's you are serving them. Just disguise them a little.

Kid's are a bit overweight these day's. I think if they eat normally they will be ok. The main thing is to get them out from in front of the Tv and go outside and play. Burn off the calories. To many sit around doing nothing watching TV and playing video games, or the computer. Nothing wrong with that, but they need to get plenty of exercise as well. :)

Banana Pancakes. cook pancakes the way you usually do, then, when they are cooking put banana slices in them.

Or a morning shake:
ingredients
1 container (8 ounces) of vanilla yogurt
2 teaspoons of sugar
6 straberries, orange slices, exc. with stems cut off

and ice cubes are optional

HOPE I HELPED! Tell me if it works!

well first off. make your rules strict.making them eat vegetables and fruits is not torturing them. take away the junk food and tell them if they dont eat their fruits or vegeis that the junk is off limits. baby food is perfectly fine. if a baby can eat it then so can a 13 yearold. hope i helped
just remember to be strict. tell them your only doing it for their own good.

I never really had this problem when I was little, but I've had my fair share of picky friends. What my parents did was make a rule that we couldn't eat dessert if we didn't finish all of our other food. They will probably get full from dinner and not need dessert. Maybe try and get them to help you cook the vegetables, that way whatever they cook they will want to eat because they made it. Also, your 13 year old getting braces could actually help her with vegetables and fruits. Give her things like bananas and yogurt with fruit in it. Soft foods are usually fairly nutritious. I know baby food is soft, but I've had my fair share of friends with braces and have never heard of them eating baby food. Use what you have in front of you, pears (sliced up, she won't be able to bite into them otherwise) and steamed carrots are fairly soft. Just try and think of foods that don't involve a lot of chewing, and ask their orthodontist for any ideas, he/she probably gets that question a lot and has a list of good foods.

As for the baby food or vegetable pureé, I'm not sure. I think the vegetable pureé would work, but your kids might not be very keen on the idea of eating baby food. Many sauces come ready-made and packed with vegetables.

For a meal they have to eat packed with vegetables, try making your own soups with potatoes, carrots, celery, and tomato and some type of meat in it. They'll have to eat it because it is the only part of their dinner. It's quite filling and contains a lot of vegetables.
