My parents won't let me listen to music!!!!

Question Posted Tuesday March 22 2005, 3:32 am

My parents know that I want to listen to Green day and Bowling for soup and a large variety of other music bands, but won't let me. I'm 13, but they prolly think it's too young. How can I convince them that I enjoy music and am missing out on a lot without it?? And besides-I should be entitled to what they had.

Additional info, added Tuesday March 22 2005, 12:06 pm:
/\ It night be because music is a right of passage and they don't want to "lose" me. Go figure..

well, if they think that it is innaropriate, then you should let them listen to some of it and then show them that it is OK. Oh, and if they dont like curse words, then cut those songs. Just tell them what you told us about how u r missing out on stuff. hope i helped

I know exactly where your coming from. Parents are really blaming the media for the "loss" of their children's attention and your right it is a right of passage. But you still have to think of where your parents are trying to come from. I love Green Day and Bowling for Soup just as well but some of their music is questionable. Maybe not to us so much because that is what we are accustomed to. If you look back in the day it was all Marvin Gaye and the Temptations, but now its all of our music like 50 cent about getting shot and green day about screwing the goverenment. It's just how you look at it. My advice is to try to see where they are at as parents and explain to them that you do understand their problem with you listening to music but there actually is a lot of our teen culture in music and you really are missing out on a lot when you dont get to listen to it.
P.S. by the way. there is this thing called radio edit!! LOL

Don't try to fight on if you can get them to let you listen to music, talk to your parents, sit down with them, and ask, "mom, and dad, why can't I listen to music, I think I deserve an answer to why I can't" and they will probably be glad to answer. And if they say they feel it isn't appropriate, then you need to give them the CDs you listen to, or print out the lyrics, and have them read them. Now, Green Day, they have cuss words, and let me just say that my dad was upset about the song, "American Idiot" because it said bad things about America. But, you need to prove that its not appropriate.

Tell them what you just told us that you are old enough to be able to listen to music and that you are missing out on a lot of things, just because you can't listen to it, and that music is something you enjoy and this should convince them to let you listen to music.

Honesly, if I had a daughter or son that was 13 years old I would not let them listen to those bands either. Your parents only want the best for you.

Omg! Just talk to them one more time. Tell them to acually listen to the lyrics of those bands like Simple Plan and stuff because it acually means something. There is nothing bad about it! Hope they understand! x0 ` __

Talk to them and tell them that you like music and should be aloud to listen to it.
Explain to them that there's nothing wrong with that kind of music and you can't help not having different tastes in music.
They should be thankful you don't want to listen to something like Eminem with 'fuck' in every other sentence.

Your age shouldn't matter really. I listen to Green Day and all that good stuff and I'm 15. Tell them that considering you're a teenager now, you should be entitled to what they had as children, and that some way you're going to have to listen to some sort of music. Tell them that music is everywhere and you, as a person, should have the same rights as every other teenager. Music is life.

What's wrong with Greenday? I like them myself.Don't know the other band.
When do they say it will be okay? Have you sat down and talked with them about it? You need to.
Maybe they would let you if they knew that not all groups are created equal.Maybe go online and get some lyric sheets and show them the words to some of the songs. You can find almost any group you want. Just go to google type in band name + lyrics. See if that maybe helps.
