i'm currently a freshman in my second semester of college and i have a problem staying awake in my classes, even if i get adequate hours of sleep the night before!
i've tried drinking coffee during class (despite the caffeine, has not worked for me), bringing munchies, having a water bottle, doodling on my notebook, and vice versa. basically anything to keep me busy and awake! all of my attempts have failed...any ideas?

It's a class where I don't have to take notes, but to stay awake, I take notes anyways. Except, I try to write with the other hand. (I am left-handed, so I try to take notes with my right-hand). I know this sounds like an odd solution, but it really does keep you awake because you have to focus so intently on what you are writing, and it is somewhat amusing. But, you might not be able to read your notes later. In case that happens, bring a tape recorder, and you can go over what was said in class later when you are more awake. Other than that, I would just drink some Red Bull before class, and bring a couple with you to drink during class... hope I helped a little. Good luck! But I mean, if you know it's none of these factors, then next time you go to the doctors for a checkup just ask them about it and see if theres anything wrong possibly.

I read your feedback, you seem like your doing a pretty good job. At least it's only a couple minutes each class.
But I want to add another thing. Your probably not going to find any College courses that are less than an hour and a half. Seriously, your lucky. I have a couple of two and a half hour classes this semester. My worst was a four hour class with a ten minute break after two hours.
I know, it's sucky, but your gonna have to get used to it from now on.

As was already said, don't over-dress. I have had a lot of problems staying awake in one particular class this past winter because the heat is always so high in the room.
Another thing you should try is paying attention to every word your Professor says. If you are taking notes, instead of just doodling, your mind will be more awake. Your in college, chances are, your taking classes that you are interested in, or that you need for a future career. That should be enough incentive to want to learn.
Also, you should wake up with enough time to get up, wake up, and eat. Don't over eat, but eat a small amount. Also, take a shower, and let really cold water run on you for a few seconds right before you get out.
Coffee has never worked for me either. I think drinking plenty of water makes me slighlty more awake.
My best advice would be to take notes and actually listen to your teacher. Don't just doodle, write down notes.
If none of this works, then at least try your hardest to study your textbook, and do practice questions/essays, or whatever else would help you learn the things that your suppposed to be learning in class. Your paying for the classes, it's up to you to not waste that money.

This helps me stay awake sometimes, it's sometimes refreshing. You could also wake up 10 minutes earlier, and right before you leave, exercise. Get your blood flowing. if it's cold in the building and you're in sweats you're going to fall asleep because you're comfortable. I found this out the hard way during the ACT (first time, I still beat the national average by 8). Being cold will make you more alert (for me anyway).
also, nap between classes. I've heard from friends in college that it works well to calm the cravings to sleep during class unless your class goes late and you're still in there during nap time.

bUtTeRfLiEs answered Friday March 4 2005, 6:15 pm: You may have a concentration problem. Seek your doctor about getting prescriptions, there are many things you can take, Ritalin, Stratera, Adderall, and many others. But don't take too high of mg of w/e you take, that might make you sleepier.

BeautifulMadness answered Friday March 4 2005, 5:56 pm: Sometimes you can get too much sleep (unfortunately) so try not to get more than say 10 hours. Keep drinking the water, at least a litre a day; it'll help you to concentrate more in the long run.
If coffee doesn't work, try cola. That has sugar as well as caffiene so it should give you a double boost, or even biscuits dunked in coffee.
When you feel like dropping off, try talking to people, getting up and going to the toilet, tapping your feet under the table - anything that involves movement. Stretch your legs out, move your position in your chair (try to sit upright) and try and get a seat by the window so you cna get lots of air to keep you awake or by the door so you can watch the people going by.
I know exactly what you mean though - I fell asleep in Business while writing the word 'help' yesterday and woke up to 'hep' and a squiggle. Maybe we just get bored easily?
