my singing needs help!!!

Question Posted Thursday November 25 2004, 12:43 am

Hey every1,
This is miSSc and I need some advice about my singing...I can sing, but my vocal range (singing range) is kinda limited and my voice cracks sometimes when I go high. I know most of you will say that I should get voice lessons but...I don't have time for one. I use to take lessons but I had to give up because I started not having time for one. So...got any tips? I want to improve my "chest" voice. The highest note I can hit is a high "C" but I want to go higher with out straining my voice and not cracking either. Please help me!!!!
Sincerely,
MiSSc

Hey well i love to sing as well im a tenor in the North High Concert Choir. I think if you do warm ups to get your voice prepped for singing it should improve. I also heard that it is wise to avoid dairy products because it produces flem.
Hope i helped -mike

Practice everyday. It will warm your voice better and then it will be easyer to sing high. Trust me i know lol I do the same thing... but practicing every day will definatly help you voice to high notes. Good Luck!

What do you mean by High C? One octave above middle C, or two octaves above? If you can only comfortably hit one octave above middle C, that doesn't mean you're a bad singer, it means your an alto, who has a naturally lower range than a soprano. Don't stress, the world needs more good altos. If you can sing the C two octaves above middle C though, you shouldn't be stressing one bit - I'm a first soprano and I find it nearly impossible to reach top C. Of course, it's always a good idea to work on your range. The advice Siren gave is good - do exercises like scales, and work up by semitones so that you are gradually reaching the higher notes. Also, always warm up your voice before you attempt those high notes, as this will make it easier. Good luck!

If you don't have "time" to have a singing lesson, lets say 30mins once a week or even every 2 weeks then I don't think you are very serious about this singing stuff and you should stop wasting everyone's time! :)

buy a tape/cd for vocal warm ups and all that, try talking to your local music store owner (not the cd type store, but the store where they sell the instruments and sheet music)

Okay, I sing opera and I have a three octave range full-voiced. Keep in mind that you might not be a soprano. It's totally normal for people to not be able to go high. I know someone who's more comfortable singing below the staff than in it. I'm more comfortable singing above the staff than in it. Lol.
What ever you do, do NOT force your voice to go higher than it can, or lower. Do fifth-slides. Like middle C to G, then back to C. Then go up a half-step and go C sharp-Gsharp-Csharp, then up another half step, etc...when your voice cracks, go one half step down, then go back up and try that note again. If it doesn't work, don't force it and go back down as low as you can without straining your voice. Relax into your low notes, don't force them. If they don't come out, stop. If you can't go as low as your normally can, take a break and drink some water. If you can't go low, you strained your voice going high.
Don't push your voice.
If you want more advice/help, feel free to contact me. I love to help people sing better - I sort of teach voice.
I hope this helps!
-Siren =)

If you do voice excersizes up and down the scale, like c, b, a, g, f, a, b, c ...yea if you know what im talking about, and if you can hit the low notes better, work on the high notes more then the low notes cause you know you can sing those...ive been in a chior for 8 years... voice excersizes work pretty good for me, just do them before you sing =) HOpe i helped

Chelsea answered Thursday November 25 2004, 1:17 pm:
i used to have this problem too. if you want your range to expand you should practice vocalizing just on your own. go higherthan you think you can. if your voice cracks go back and do that note again. keep doing it until your voice doesnt crack. then move on to the next note

Hey girly! well i am a singer too but i've never had voice lessons before.....without cracking your voice, breathing a certain way helps a lot...you should be using your stomach when you breath...this helps you from straining your voice and cracking. i do it all the time and it helps a whole lot...even though you don't have time for voice lessons..later on you should think oh getting one....goodluck :)

aaaasssscccc answered Thursday November 25 2004, 12:33 pm:
When singing high notes, think as if you are singing through the top of your head. It's okay if you crack... you just have to get your voice used to it. Keep practicing and see how you do. You never know, maybe you need to make time for voice lessons...

Also do your excercies before singingso u can warm up ur voice! If u need anymore help about singing or anyhitng else let me know, cuz like i said i am a vocal major at my high school. hey hunny!

I sing too! I am singing in the thesbian competition at my school (not lesbian, thesbian) But anyways, you could warm up your voice while you have the radio on in your room, and then try and sing some songs along with your favorite artists. Thats what I do, then I practice my song for thesbians on my tape. Some tips are to
1) Stand up when singing (shoulder with apart) and take deep breaths.
2) Don't force your voice to go high if it can't. My singing teach says it will just ruin your voice more. But go as high as you can take it.
3) Make sure your mouth is "OPEN" if its not open then you cannot sing :)
4) Breath through your nose and (of course the air comes out of your mouth while singing lol)
DO NOT FORCE YOURSELF TO GO HIGHER THAN YOU CAN!
Stinks for me lol, I have braces so my lips stick to my braces when I sing certain keys lol
alright hunny?
Do Well :)
