I know this sounds completely messed up, and might gross u out. but i need help. sometimes when im bored, ill just start scratching my head to the point where it bleeds and forms scabs (very little ones!) and now i cant help but pick at them and scratch them. theres no reason i do it, its just a realllllllly weird habit. i dont know whats wrong with me?! any tips on how i can make it stop?
Other than that, habits take alot of work to quit, and you know, its just like, biting your lips till they bleed. But you know what helps, sometimes when you put something on your lips, like some kind of cream or lip gloss or lip balm or something, it makes you not bite it, so you wouldn't bite on the ointment, you know. So maybe if you put something on your head, that might help. [ Lola's advice column | Ask Lola A Question ]
Amarete answered Saturday March 20 2010, 5:52 am: I do that, too. :( It's a nasty habit that I wish I could get rid of...but it's more common than you think. A lot of people pick their scalp, the skin around their nails, scabs, or their lips. Usually it's a nervous thing like biting your nails.
As for getting rid of the habit, try finding something else to do with your hands. Wear a rubber band on your arm and twist it around your fingers in weird shapes when you feel like scratching your scalp. Really concentrate on that and you'll forget about your need to scratch. Also, clip your nails as short as you can, if you haven't already.

Hope this helps

hailebop answered Thursday October 7 2004, 10:14 am: It sounds like a nervous habbit that probably started because you scratch your scalp because you have very dry skin there. The problem is now it's probably become habit so that even if you cure the cause (your dry skin) you'll probably still do it when your stressed or bored if you don't concentrate on not doing it. It's important to combat the dry skin though - you'll want to use conditioner on your hair whenever you wash it and possibly try shampoo with tea-tree oil in it, as this is very soothing for the scalp and will make it less itchy. Then you have to work on breaking the habit. A good tactic is to replace the scratching with something else - somebody else has suggested chewing gum, which sounds like a good idea. You will have to concentrate hard on not doing it though, as, like any habit, it's very easy to slip back into it. [ hailebop's advice column | Ask hailebop A Question ]
MoonFisher answered Thursday October 7 2004, 9:33 am: Take up a new hobbie, like chewing gum, and TRY very hard to leave your poor head alone. In the meantime, rub some medicine on those scabs. Don't use peroxide, it will bleach your hair. [ MoonFisher's advice column | Ask MoonFisher A Question ]

kris567 answered Thursday October 7 2004, 1:39 am: when ur bored bite your nails [dont be come addicted 2 it or n e thing]. i think its better then scratching your head to where it bleeds. or when ur bored thumb wrestle with ur self[lol]. i kno it sounds corny but it keeps u busy.
XoxBroKeNxoX answered Thursday October 7 2004, 1:02 am: Picking scabs is a fun, but consequential. It can lead to illness, or scars. we dont want that! Plus where you pick scabs on ur head, it can scar, causing hair to never grow there again. So if u keep on scabbin ur gonna be bald! Hmm, i suggest maybe doing something else like typing or doing homework, or something fun!! Try looking on the internet on how to stop habits!! ive been bitin my nails for over 10 years now and i still cant quit!! maybe its cuz im a wuss, but i know u wont quit!
RaNdOmGuY answered Thursday October 7 2004, 12:40 am: well , my one of my bestest friends whom is popular and has no flaws, actually used to do this, she would pick, and sniff, gross i know, but it was gross, so she even signed a paper saying she wouldnt do it, so she got fake nails and it stopped, and now she i perfect, so good luck and remember the more u pick the more hair u loose
good luck [ RaNdOmGuY's advice column | Ask RaNdOmGuY A Question ]

We all have our idiosyncracies, don't worry, you're not alone. That used to happen with my legs, turned out they were too dry.
