First you have to lose some of the "Belly fat" before you can get a 6 pac. Then by doing crunches they make your tummy more toned!

i think it'll just turn your stomach more muscular and tighten it up so it doesn't look fat, but that doesn't mean you'll have a slim waste

I don't do crunches. I do sit-ups. I do what you call ladder sit-ups: 10 on Monday, 20 on Tuesday, 30 on Wednesday, 40 on Thursday, and 50 on Friday. I also run throughout the week. On Saturday, I would add a couple of miles extra, take a break on Sunday. I have had success in losing weight in the stomach and all over, and also getting that muscular look in the stomach. Keep working at it. It takes patience.

it does both, you lose the fat and it can tone your abs to a 6 pack.

You get the six pack by losing the fat in your stomach and gaining muscle. Crunches do both.
