to play bass or not to play bass

Question Posted Monday August 9 2004, 6:19 pm

i've been playing the guitar for almost 2 years now and i'm pretty good at it... my friends want to start a band but they need a bass player... i was thinking about becoming a bass player. has anyone here played guitar and then started playing bass? is there a big difference? how hard is it to play? and how badly will i get calisis on my fingers?

I've been playing both guitar and bass for 5 years. There's not really that much of a difference at all. It's really not that hard to play, depending on the songs you will like to learn. About how badly you will get calisis on your fingers, depends on how long you play for. I used to play 3 hours a day, and had really bad calisis and my finger would bleed, so I had to cut down. But, good luck on this hole band thing =)

playing bass is very easy. if u have any guitar skill at all, you can master bass and beyond. theres not too much different, unless u play with your fingers, then its learning how to use 2-4 fingers, but most styles of music bass is very easy. if youve been playing guitar consistantly for 2 years your fingers will be calised enought to play bass~ Rock out!

guitar is based on chords, bass is all linear.

I play both... I started on bass and picked up guitar later. Callouses on bass aren't any different than on guitar - but I finger pick both (aka, I don't use a plastic pick almost ever).

Fundamentally, though the bass guitar is a guitar, it is not at all the same, and the approach to the instrument is very different. You don't play it like a guitar, you play it like a bass - you are part of the rhythm section, not the lead.

Bass techniques like slap/funk, walking bass lines, and other such things are often pretty unknown to most of the guitarists I know. The guitar is almost delicate - the bass is beefier, heavier, and the strings are bigger. You're an octave lower and the bass can rage like thunder, or be fluid and elegant.

It's almost exactly the same except for the sound. It's not that hard you just have to get used to it and you'll get a couple of calisis on your fingers but just for the first couple of days. Hope I helped! <3

From all the people I've talked to that play guitar, they ALL have said it's easier to play bass guitar. They said it's just more basic and they explained it some kind of way,but I really didn't understand. If you can play lead or rhythm, you can learn bass.

My brother did that, he said it really isn't that hard to learn. He had to take lessons for the guitar, but he taught himself how to play bass. Good luck! :)

hey i play electric and bass...im pretty sure base is easier...u'll have no problem. i would use a pick for the bass guitar cuz ur fingers will hurt because the strings are thicker and harger to pluck with ur fingers. eventually u will get used to it. GOOD LUCK!

Well I'm not speaking from experience but I have a friend who did that and supposedly the switch is a really easy one to make. You'd prbly get the same callousses you would have had from playing the guitar. You should try it out and see if you like it.

I'm not exactly postive on the calisis front, but I'm sure it can be done. My aunt's boyfriend is two bands up in NJ, and he mostly plays the guitar for himself, but in his bands he plays the bass. He thinks it's much easier to play the bass anyway, especially if you've been playing guitar. But it's easier to play any instrument, if you've played one before, that is a known fact. Because I was in a guitar workshop at camp this summer, and these two girls were picking up on it alot faster than anyone else was, and I was like..."Woah" and they told me it was a piece of cake, because one of them played the cello, and the other played the violin. I didn't even know those instruments were alike, other than the fact that they both were stringed. SO YES! You will be able to pick up bass easilier (is that a word) get yourself a "Learning Bass for Dummies" and you'll be all set.
