Question Posted Wednesday December 10 2003, 4:31 pm
Is it possible to become pregnant through oral sex (female giving to male) ? I was wondering since if you ingest semen isn't it possible for it to work through your body?
Also, is it possible to become pregnant if a couple is merely kissing or say fooling around and the male ejaculates into the vaginal area? They are not naked, boxers and shorts on the male and underwear on the female.
This may seem silly but I really need to know since I am having a difficult time finding alternatives to sex since I feel I am not ready for that yet. Advice would be great!
nope, one cannot get pregnant by swallowing semen. However, STD's can be contracted (and spread) via oral sex.
It's possible, but not all that likely, that you will get pregnant if your "fooling around" and the man ejaculates into his underwear. Just to be safe, have him change them shortly afterwards - and change your underwear too.
I don't think the questions are silly, and I think you're showing maturity by asking for alternatives to vaginal intercourse since you don't feel your ready for that.
There are lots of ways to "get off". I suggest using a condom for two reasons: it makes clean up easier, and when you are ready to have penetrating sex, your both already used to it. Use your imagination. A few starting points:
* manual sex: use your hands and fingers get the other person off.
* mutual masturbation: get yourself off in front of each other
* dry humping: keep your pants on, but rub your hips together until you get off
* I've been brought to orgasm by my partner sucking and rubbing my breasts

It's not exactly 'easy' to get pregnant. Not as easy as people may think. It's incredible that in this day and age, many are still misinformed.
Oral sex: Nope. Sperm ingested through your mouth has no hopes of uniting with an egg in your uterus.
Ejaculation through clothing: Very, very, VERY slim chance. Even if the sperm do penetrate the cloth, sperm die after a few seconds of exposure to the air so the ejaculation would have to soak through his clothing right onto your 'wet spot' (if you were that aroused anyway) in order to stay in continuous contact with bodily fluid in order to travel all the way up to your fallopian tubes. I'm sure it could happen. But it's very unlikely (you have more chances of winning the lottery)
Ejaculation in vaginal area: Again unlikely. I think it would depend on the particular man's semen (yes, it differs from man to man). If the man's semenal fluid is thin and evaporates quickly, fertilazation is probably unlikely. However, if it is of a thicker consistency...and especially if there is 'afterplay' moving the fluid closer to or actually into the vagina then the probability goes up.
If you could talk frankly to any couple trying to conceive, you would find out that even with having unprotected sex where the man ejaculates inside the vagina there's isn't anywhere near 100% chance of pregnancy. Basically for a woman with a 28 day menstrual cycle, there are only about 72-80 hours when an egg can be fertilized. However, sperm can live inside the fallopian tubes for up to 6 days, and a woman never knows exactly when she will ovulate...therefore, the assumption is that of the 28 days, 12 are 'fertile'.
Again, I don't want to encourage unsafe practices; especially if you are young, because your body is very hormonal and unpredictable...and anything can happen at anytime. But there is no reason to be deathly afraid of pregnancy. Have a bigger fear of STDs. Find a good, caring gynocologist. And always, always, ALWAYS keep condoms handy...in your purse preferably. Even if you are on the pill. The longer you wait, the better, but sex is natural and healthy...and in the right context should not be feared. OneMan answered Thursday December 18 2003, 7:32 pm: Nothing seems "silly" when it comes to your health. Number one: If there is only oral sex, and the semen is ingested, then there is no fear of impregnation. The acids within the stomach cavity serve as an excellent assasin for any sperm still alive.
As for the second. That's a bit trickier. Even though the genitalia is covered, the risk is still there. Semen has a way of working it's way through semi-porous materials. That's why "lamb skin" condoms are not recommended for birth control alone. The semen containing the sperm can find it's way through the openings and into the vaginal cavity, possibly leading to impregnation. I would imagine the same thing rings true for underwear. Even though they may APPEAR to present a barrier, there are small, almost microscopic opening within the material that could allow for the seepage of semen. My recommendation? Don't. Err on the side of caution. And by the way, notb a silly question at all. Quite intelligent, indeed. [ OneMan's advice column | Ask OneMan A Question ]
Moop answered Thursday December 11 2003, 9:14 pm: What is in question one is medically safe, by ways of pregnancy. However you can get an STD (or several) and there WILL be emotional and mental pain in the long run unless you wait until after marraige.
Kissing can only spread colds. The ejaculation near the vaginal area sounds risky. Yes, one can still get pregnant in this manner.
ScaperJess answered Thursday December 11 2003, 3:52 pm: You can't get pregnant from oral sex... your digestive system is totally separate from your reproductive track, even if it wasn't those little swimmers would die in your stomach acid...
As for the fooling around the more clothing the less probability, although it is highly unlikely...
Good for you for looking for alternatives, your questions clearly show me your not ready for sex... there are many alternatives... I'm guessing your quite young... If I might give you some advice to help you with your quest... with your significant other be sure to set up boundaries, in my relationship's early stages (first few months) our boundary was nothing below the waist with your hands... as time goes on and your more comfortable with each other than you can extend those boundaries... however be clear about them and stick to them, I believe it’s better that way. An alternative to sex could be something like a picnic, or talking, or kissing; intimate touching and rubbing and whatever else is not the only way to show affection, and if your relationship ends up only involved in that aspect of it then your lacking and it might not be as successful... shirts off, bra off, bottom fully clothed is a good safe way to be close with out risk... using hands to rub each other as an alternative to oral sex... you can even do that fully clothed... there are many ways to get close with out getting “close”... I myself am not comfortable with the idea of oral sex, and I know in the beginning many women aren’t so you might want to find another alternative to that as well... and remember be safe and set up boundaries to stay comfortable...

Welcome to the world of enzymes and your GI tract.
No. As has been stated, ingestion will not lead to pregnancy. Sperm die pretty quickly as it is (female sperm can last up to 4 days in-utero, but the male sperm don't last long at all). Your stomach is filled with hydrochloric acid. Think about that for a minute.
As has again been stated by others, indirect contact in the pubic region is not "safe". There ARE reported instances of pregnancy caused by semen (being a liquid) permeating clothing and going right on inside. Note that when both partners are aroused, those regions begin to produce fluids. Those fluids are designed for 2 things: natural lubrication and to act as a travelling medium for sperm to reach the egg. [ MFS's advice column | Ask MFS A Question ]
sylverwolff answered Thursday December 11 2003, 12:13 pm: through oral sex not there is not chance, I believe, although I think it's horribly slim, there may be a chance if he ejaculates into the vaginal area because the area is warm causing sperm to stay alive, but I'm not sure, contact a counceller from your local health unit to know for sure, you could phone and stay annonoymous. Good for you for waiting till your ready. [ sylverwolff's advice column | Ask sylverwolff A Question ]
Joshua answered Thursday December 11 2003, 12:07 pm: As others have said, oral sex is safe as far as pregnancy goes, but you can get a variety of STDs if you are not using oral sex condoms. If he disapproves of the idea, let him know that he isn't the one putting a dick in his mouth. And, make a game of it, putting it on and everything to help increase the excitement and make it less of a problem. But, in this day and age, you should always always always practice safe sexual contact.
Kissing cannot lead to pregnancy. However, even though it is fairly unlikely, it is possible that if some semen soaks onto your underwear, you could become pregnant. It's not likely, but there IS a possibility. So be careful with that. Even if he does not ejaculate, but has some preejaculate, which he most likely will, then it can contain sperm also.
It's great that you are looking for alternatives. Just take things slow, and make sure you are careful to not let sexual excitement cloud your judgement. Have you considered taking the pill? If you are planning on being sexually active, it may be to consider that. [ Joshua's advice column | Ask Joshua A Question ]

zoe. answered Wednesday December 10 2003, 6:57 pm: you cannot get pregnant from performing oral sex on a man. you are still susceptible to STIs like HIV/AIDS, chlamydia, gonorrhea, etc. so make sure you use a condom even when performing oral. just because you dont actually swallow the semen doesnt mean you cant get an STI due to something called "pre-ejaculate."
if a couple is fooling around in their underwear and the penis is near the vagina, there is still a small chance that semen can soak through both peoples underwear and get in. its a safer activity than penetration, but still somewhat risky. so just be careful.
and congratulations for trying to find alternatives to intercourse and knowing youre not ready. youre a lot further ahead than most people. [ zoe.'s advice column | Ask zoe. A Question ]
