My friends and I sometimes make ourselves

Question Posted Tuesday October 14 2003, 11:05 pm

My friends and I sometimes make ourselves throw up like if we eat a really big meal and don't want to get fat from it. It's not bad, we're not anorexic or anything, and I know a ton of people who do it. But this one girl at our school found out and is like freaking out about it... how do we let her know it's okay?

It's not okay. And, duh, you are not anorexic, because anorexia is starving yourself, bullemia is forcing yourself to throw up. Things like this can turn to habit and obsession about being thin. I'd take your friend's advice and see a doctor about it. And a ton of people at my school think I worship satan, because I dress differently from them, but that doesn't make that true.

You don't let her know it is okay, because it is not okay. Throwing up after eating is not anorexia, it is called Bulemia. Constantly making yourself throw up (or even after just "big" meals) can cause serious health problems later in life (and sometimes sooner), including esophogeal hernia, stomach polyps, colon polyps, stomach problems, ulcers, acid reflux, etc.. etc..

Also, trust me, those "big" meals, keep getting smaller and smaller (you'll start considering smaller and smaller meals "big").

Even a HUGE meal (till you're so full your stomach hurts) every once in a while will not make you fat. Repeated eating of very high sugar, very high carbohydrates, very high fat content may cause you to gain weight... but it's not how much you eat in one sitting, it's WHAT you eat.

Eat a fairly balanced diet and you should be fine. Remember, your weight WILL go up and down as you grow, that's NORMAL. It'll get to it's more normal weight as you get to be around 20 or so. At that point, if you feel you need to loose a few pounds, concentrate on normal diets, rather than making yourself throw up.

Don't cause yourself health problems later on... because trust me, the ones from making yourself throw up can be much worse than having a few extra pounds.

news flash- IT'S NOT OKAY! making yourself throw up lowers your potassium level in your body. without this, you can get seriously ill and die. if you're concerned about your weight- eat light foods! putting your health at risk is NOT okay. think it's no big deal? think again. so think about it... are you doing this so you can look good at your viewing when everyone looks upon your body in the casket wish shame to have known you and your friends???

Okay if you are young around 10-19 area and you do that that is not really good for your Health But if you are in that age range you still have a fast matabilizim.Which is when you eat it all diagest it.It all goes away a dosn't make you Fat. I think the only reason that girl is freaking is because she care Bout u and she dont want you tto ruin your health it is not kool to make yourself throw up because you lose all sorts of Body Fluids and if you do that you can lose alot and get sick

The only part you got right is that it's not anorexia.
Did you know a ton is 2000 lbs? Do you know 2000 lbs worth of people who think puking for fun and profit is a good idea?
Dude, I don't. The majority is not always right, but they often have a point. I think all that needs to be said has been, by the nice folk down there who also commented.
You know, there used to be a little religious group who had an affinity for doom and koolaid, who told people, It's not bad, a ton of people are doing it. But some people freaked out. Then everyone in the cult killed themselves.
Does history repeat itself or what?

Wait what? haven't you ever heard of Bulimia? That's just as bad...you can die and I'm not trying to scare you but its a deadly disease where you eat and make yourself throw up....its an eating disorder, just like anorexia....and the girl was freaking out because she knows the same thing I do... that it can kill you.....so stop now before this disease digs you down deeper.....and trust me, it can.

She'll never think it's okay. And the more you try and convince her, the more she'll think you have an eating disorder.

I think there is a big difference between people who make themselves throw up and bulimics, mainly why and how often you make yourself throw up. You sound like you're doing it mostly because your friends are, which isn't terrible but it's still not the greatest reason to do things. my friends and I used to carve boys' names into our skin to prove our love for them, which is probably equally as dumb as making yourself throw up, so I'm in no place to judge.

The thing about doing stuff like cutting up your arms or making yourself throw up is that they can easily become something you need to do instead of something you just do sometimes. And it can be hard to tell when you've crossed that line. So I can understand why the girl is freaking out. And I don't think there's any way to explain it to her that will make her think what you and your friends are doing is okay.

I also think you should stop throwing up, because doing it regularly is bad for your digestion and your teeth. You can be fat and pretty, or skinny and pretty, but rotten yellow teeth is never, ever attractive.

Not only is it a terrible thing that really is quite serious with many serious consequences, but... well... it's not a really good way to go about weight loss either. Yes, you'll be depriving your body of nutrients, but by the time you are able to actually throw up a good deal of the sugars and carbohydrates and such will have been absorbed into your body. You'll just be hurting yourself and depriving your body of what it actually needs.

You should seriously seek help if you don't think you'll be able to stop on your own. If it really isn't a big deal then ask a professional about it. Surely they'll tell you that you're not at all bulemic and it's ok because other people do it.

it's really not ok. You're ruining your body by doing this. It could turn into bullemia, which is extremely serious.

Turc answered Wednesday October 15 2003, 9:13 pm:
You can't, because it's NOT okay.

You're hurting yourself! Can't you see that?

Do you know the damages throwing up on purpose can cause? It stains and eats away at your teeth, gives you halitosis, and your stomach acid burns your esophogus and mouth. Plus, you are depriving your body of essential nutrients that it needs to survive. Have you been restless or run down lately, with low energy levels? That'd be why. Purging is generally not a good idea.

"I know a ton of people who do it..." If a ton of people jumped off a bridge, would you?

If I were this chick, I'd be freaking out too. You're in a lose-lose situation. You need to seek help and stop ASAP.

Girlwithamansname answered Wednesday October 15 2003, 7:43 am:
Well-it really ISN'T ok to throw up purposefully.

You may not think of yourselves as anorexic but what you are is bulimic as you appear to throw up quite regularly.

It's a genuine illness and very damaging for your bodies.I'm not suprised that the girl is 'freaking out about it'. Try telling a responsible adult, maybe a parent or your school nurse and ask for help.

Did you seriously just say that? No, making yourself throw up to lose weight is never okay. Just like driving drunk, and boyfriends who hit you, there are some things that you don't touch with a ten foot poll. It's NEVER okay, got it? You and your friends need to get help before you really hurt yourselves... you are starving your bodies, for one thing, which will only make it try to store more calories. Please get help right away.
