So I'm 15/f, 5'3" tall, and currently weigh 131 pounds. (I hate even typing that number.) Two years ago, I weighed about 140 and completely hated it, so I starved myself. For about a week, I ate barely anything, but I would never go more than a day without eating at least something, even if it was just one or two tortilla chips. It was more just for the feeling of eating, if you get what I mean. In that week, I lost about 16 pounds (so I was 124) and within the few weeks after that, I got down to 116. I haven't exactly starved myself since for that amount of time, but I do go without enough food some days. I don't want to say I've been comfortable with myself since then, but I've kind of learned to ignore it and pretend I am. But lately, I really can't stand it. I look at my stomach and my butt, and all I see is fat. My friends and sisters (who don't know about my body issues) tell my a lot how skinny I am, but that doesn't make a difference. It kind of makes me just want to starve myself more. I look in the mirror, and I absolutely HATE what I see. I look fat and wide and disgusting. I don't want to see myself like that. I hate not loving myself that way. I'm seriously considering starting to throw up after I eat, but I really don't want that. I can't think of any other way, though, besides just ridding myself of the food. I've tried exercise, but it just doesn't work. Any advice?? Please. I hate this so so so much. (Sorry this is so incredibly long.)
PS- I don't eat a lot of junk. I eat fairly well, with the occasional sugary treat.

You worry too much.
The average weight for 5'3 is anywhere from 115 - 135. So you're still in the healthy range. Maybe 124 would be an ideal weight if you felt like you HAD to loose weight.
Instead of starving yourself, or throwing up, have you considered going vegetarian? I don't mean to sound preachy, but I've always been on the heavy side and when I switched to veg. I've lost 10lbs and have managed to keep it off (and i still eat junk food ocasionally). Meat is high in calories and saturated fat. You might find it helpful if you cut some out for awhile.
Need a plan on what to it?

Breakfast- Quaker Oatmeal. Banana or Orange. Green Tea.
OR Peanut Butter Banana Wrap. Green Tea.
OR 1 unfrosted, choice of flavor poptart, 1 apple. Green Tea.

Snack - Clif or Luna Bar

Lunch - BBQ Tofu (shake n bake is vegetarian) with Lettuce, Veggies of your choice, in Whole Wheat Wrap.
OR Meatless "Meat"balls with Lettuce, and veggies on Whole Wheat Wrap.
Side of carrot sticks/celery sticks with hummus.

Snack - Handful of seeds/nuts.

Dinner - Veggie "Chickn" Strips on a Salad with Italian Dressing.
OR Veggie Burger. 1/4 plate sweet potato fries. 1/2 plate green vegetables.
Anything you want really.

(Drink Milk throughout the day. As well as Water.)

as I guess you can probably tell I have little tiny boobs! Wearing a 32 a cup while all the rest of my friends seem to be at least a C.

Is there anything I can do about this or am I just stuck with what I have? Don't worry you don't have to talk me out of getting surgery, I'm not that stupid ha ha however I would like to know if there are any pills or anything I can take.

Well, it would've helped if you gave your age. Breasts don't stop growing until you're about 17. If you're 13 or 14 posting this, give yourself a break!
16 or 17? I hear that birth control can sometimes make your breasts become larger.

So I weigh around 110 and I'm 5'5.

I'm not fat and I know that, but just my stomach bugs me. So I just want to be healthy and find someway to lose most of my stomach.

I know I should eat healthy. I just don't want to have to do the whole counting calorie stuff. What kinds of food should I stay by and what foods should I stay away from? Also, what snacks are better to eat? And exercises? Thanks!

It's great that you want to eat healthier - but you're terribly thin. 110lbs and 5'5. that's 15lbs underweight!
Eating healthier is pretty easy. Avoid soda, drink more water.
Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Chuck the junk food.

just remember, being healthy =skinny. unhealthy = well, fat.

foods you should eat: oatmeal, peanut butter, learn turkey and chicken, fish, flax seeds, olive oil, low fat or non fat dairy products, dark chocolate, any type of nuts, whole grain bread/pasta (no other type of bread), sweet potatoes (no other type of potatoes), fruits, and vegetables.

organize a menu plan for the week, planning is so much easier than just grabbing the first thing you see in the fridge! mix and match.

basic menu:
Breakfast - Oatmeal with ground flax seeds. Banana. Cup of Green Tea. Skim or Low Fat Milk.
Breakfast Snack - 1 Piece of Dark chocolate, 1 cup of strawberries.
Lunch - Turkey Whole Grain Wrap with Low Fat Swiss Cheese, Cucumbers, Lettuce/Spinach, Tomatoes, etc. 1 Apple. 1 cup of skim or low fat milk.
Afternoon Snack - Carrot Sticks and Hummus. Slice of whole grain bread.
Dinner - Baked Chicken, Steamed brown rice, 1/2 plate of vegetables. 1 cup of milk.

you can mix it up a bit as well - and you don't have to follow the exact plan. if you don't have access to this - work with what you have and ask yourself - is this really healthy? what is it going to do for me?

stay hydrated through the day. drink at least 2.2 liters of water.

also exercise. try walking around the block a few times for an easy workout!

I'm pretty fit, I just have a bit more weight to lose. What kind of exercise is kind to my knees but burns a ton of calories?

I would suggest the Elliptical. Start off small (level 3 or so) and work your way up. Pedaling backwards for a few minutes helps as well. It works out your glutes (back of your thighs) and burns an extra 7% calories.

I'm getting a treadmill in a few weeks, and I was just wondering, having never used one on a weekly basis, how much I should start of doing? And how much a week? Also, how long will I have to do before I see a change in my weight?

I normally do not like the treadmill. I feel that is a slow calorie - burner but I use it as a cool-down at the gym.

If you want to see a change in your weight, I suggest changing your pace every few minutes. Only about .5 for each change though.
EX. starting out at 3.0 for speed
speed up to 3.5 after two minutes
speed up to 4.0 after five minutes
slow down to 3.0 after five minutes
etc. etc.

I'm not sure if the treadmill you bought is similar to the one at the gym, but changing incline is helpful too.


The average person works out 5x a week.
And usually for about 30-40 minutes per workout.


You should start seeing results anywhere between 1 - 3 months.
That is, if you're just exercising and not changing your diet.

16/f. I am about 5'4", 150 lbs... My doctor told me I should be about 138. I would like to lose some weight on my arms and in my stomach and thighs..Are there any particular exercises that can help me with this? I have no access to a gym or weight lifting equipment. Cardio is the name of the game.
Like the first person said, any type of exercises are good. Especially riding your bike! Go to the library and check out some old Seventeen magazines. They have great workout routines for target areas and are step-by-step. So fairly easy.
Crunches are good too. But aren't necessary right now. Focus more on cardio and you should be good.

Another huge HUGE factor for loosing weight is what you eat. Or at least, that's what I find a problem for my goal.

First, you should find out your BMR. A basic calculator:
Women: 661 + (4.38 x weight in pounds) + (4.33 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age) = BMR
THEN, find out how active you are and follow this calculator:

Sedentary = BMR X 1.2 (little or no exercise, desk job)
Lightly active = BMR X 1.375 (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/wk)
Mod. active = BMR X 1.55 (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/wk)
Very active = BMR X 1.725 (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days/wk)
Extr. active = BMR X 1.9 (hard daily exercise/sports & physical job or 2X day training, i.e marathon, contest etc.)


Your goal is to eat 500 LESS than what your BMR is. So let's say it's 2000. In order to loose weight, you should eat about 1500.
Remember though: don't drop calories right away. You need to gradually trim them so you won't be overwhelmed. Example. Start by eating 1800. Then 1700. Then 1500. Do it week by week.

And now you want to know what to eat. That one is easy. Best things to eat for weight loss are:

Non Fat Yogurt
Tuna
Lean Chicken
Lean Turkey
Green Tea
Oatmeal
Low-Fat String Cheese
Granola Bars
Veggies
Fruits (apples,pears, and grapefruit are a big fat-burner)
Peanut Butter
Whole-Wheat Bread
1% Milk
Basically anything that is healthy.

What I also find helpful is keeping a log of everything you're eating. Starting from day one. Keep a record of measurements, your goals, etc. You can put anything in it, really.

okay so i get out of school this friday and i want to start an exercise routine to get in shape over the summer and lose weight before i have field hockey tryouts at the end of august.

i am overweight, but not terribly, and im rocking a lot of curves. im not self conscience with my body or anything but id like to loose weight to be even more happier with myself.

so what are some really good exercises that help you loose weight and build muscle in your: arms, stomach, legs/thighs, and butt? so pretty much just everywhere actually. also what are good ways to get in relllllly good shape running wise?

get a gym membership at planet fitness or curves or any gym near you. if your under 18 you may need your mom to come with you to sign up/
swimming is also a good excersise. its easy and its fun!
biking is good As well. if your overweight - you can mkst liky loose that just by doing 30 minutes a day.

the best excersise to do is 20 minutes cardio - running, walking, biking, etc. then about 60 crunches.
if your looking for good toning excersises - try seventeen magazine. try your public library for past issues.

for food:
breakfast- oatmeal, banana, orange juice.
snack- yogurt
lunch- turkey wrap, milk
snack- apples w. peanut butter
dinner- anything healthy really. try 1/2 the plage full of vegetables. 1/4 of carbs (rice, bread, potatoes) 1/4 of protein (chicken, turkey, fish)
snack- watermelon

thats just a sample of course.
eat anywhere from 1500 - 2000 calores per day.
depends on your bmi.

I am 13 years old and I'm everybody says I have kankles. They say wow why are you so skinny and then you just have kankles. Also they say my calfs don't fit my body because I'm skinny and then my calfs are fat. I don't know why I have kankles when I skateboard everyday for like 3 hours or more and I go to the gym every day and I play basketball for an hour a day. So I don't understand why I have kankles and the rest of my body is skinny. Mabey it's just like a trait from my parents and I can't fix it. Please help.

so i need to lose weight, i need to feel better. ive been so tired and im sick of it. i want to look and feel better.

a few questions:
-what kind of vitamins are good for me to take everyday?
-for breakfast, what could i eat besides cereal? is there anything fast to make? i was thinking about making one scrambled egg and a glass of juice and vitamins. would that be good enough?
-what is something really healthy that i can bring to lunch, besides salad. i dont really want to bring anything to school that can spoil in my locker, just something really light that wont make me too full. and not really sandwiches either, because i get sick of that too quick.
-what are some healthy snacks that i can eat, besides yogurt, veggies, and fruits?
-how much water should i drink in a day?
-is there any other drinks that are healthy besides water?
-should i completely cut out junk food, or have it once or twice a week?

i want to lose weight, but i want to be healthy. i dont wanna starve myself like i already am. im slowly stopping the pop drinking, and sticking with juice and water. ill have a pop once in a while. for dinner, i just eat what my mom makes me, but im gonna start eating in smaller portions.

I'm the same age as you. and in the same situation.
so i'll tell you what i'll be doing:


- Any kind of vitamins will pretty much cut it. I usually just grab a complete multivitamin.Try looking at some labels/googling what's best for you.
- Breakfast is actually my favorite part of day. And cereal isn't the only thing out there.
try non-fat vanilla yogurt w/ bananas
Toast w/ Peanut Butter along with an apple as a side
Whole-Grain waffle with no syrup.
Or even the egg/juice/vitamin is a good one!
- Lunch: if you don't want to bring a big lunch, you can always buy something at school. I don't know what your school system is like, but we have a deli section, salad section, and the main dish. Either that, or you could just Bring in a snack like a protein bar with a peice of fruit or vegetable.
- healthy snacks: non-fat fig newtons are good. but stick to the serving size when you eat them.
uhhm. sunchips are whole grain - which is good.
ricecakes ( they have flavors and are only 60 calories per serving)
fat-free pudding cups
pria bars (in the health food section. they're really good if you're having a sweet craving)
pretzals
tablespoon of peanut butter
popped popcorn with no butter/salt (you should get a seasoning called Molly McButter. It tastes like butter, but it's really low on calories)
really, there's a lot.
- Water: standard 8 glasses a day should cut it. when you go to the store, buy a big bottle, it'll help you drink more.
- Healthy drinks: plain tea, black coffee, diet soda (don't overdo it on this either), grape juice orange juice, apple juice, crystal light (powder you can put in your water to make it taste better), low-fat milk.
- Junk food: I think it's up to you. Personally, I don't have it becuase it really just makes me freak out and have more. Just stick to the serving size. And don't have it everyday. then you should be good.
- Smaller portions: best way to do that is to use a smaller plate. it tricks your mind into thinking you ate more than you did. (:


- Excersise: Bike is good! My brother bikes and he lost 30lbs one summer. And he's been skinny his whole life! Biking everday for around 20 minutes will deffinitly be benneficial. Same goes for tredmill. 20 minutes a day is excellent. Just remember to do some crunches/pushups/situps/weights too.


- As for the whole vegan thing: try boca burgers.

Well, there's a few ways to get out of your 'plateau'
you can:
a. Cut back on calories. If you're eating 1600 calories per day, make it 1500 or 1400.
b. Increase your excersise time. 15 minutes to 25 minutes, etc.
c. Cut back on something else you eat a lot. Like replace some snacks with fruit or vegetables. Or if you drink a lot of juices drink water instead.

depending on the diet you use - you can loose around 5 to 10lbs.

all you really need to do is eat healthy. around 1400 calroies per day.
work out a half hour every other day. and do situps.

im almost 16, (less than a month) and i am 5'5" and weigh 160lbs. i really hate the way i look and i just want to lose a lot of weight. im even considering anorexia. this has been an ongoing problem in my life. i hate being fat. any advice would help.

well, i used to be slightly bigger than you in january. but i went on a new years resolution and started to eat healthy. i lost 20lbs in two and a half months by doing that.
all you really need to do:
- start eating more vegetables
- eat an apple every morning (it helps burn fat)
- drink 8 glasses of water per day
- keep a food diary and write down everything you eat.
- work out at least 3x per week
- get a job or join a club to get you out of the house and not surrounded by food.
- stay away from soda and any other kind of sugary food.
- eat at least 1400 calories per day. any less than that would be considered anorexia and you DO NOT repeat DO NOT want to do that. sure you WILL loose the weight, but you will gain it all back as soon as you start eating again. if you start eating again at all, it could turn into a serious matter and a matter that will have to be treated.

I am changing my food habits, because I want to start eating more healthily.
For breakfast I usually have muesli(sp?) with fruit and yogurt.
I usually miss out lunch as I have things going on...and in school I eat a sandwich( usually tuna :) )
For dinner, I have salads, soups, meat, fish, vegetables..etc.

Is this a healthy choice or should I change something?

it sounds pretty healthy.
soups have a lot of sodium though. which holds water. just don't eat it everyday and you should be fine.
don't skip lunch. you should really eat something. if you're in that big of a rush, pack some crackers and peanutt butter or something the night before so you can just brign it with you when you go somewhere.

don't forget to excersise 3x per week as well!
