Q: Okay, so I haven't started my period, I'm 13 and I've tried putting a tampon in, it hurts so bad and I am afraid that I am way too small down there, and when I do get it out, it HURTS. I have tried fingering and it hurts so bad and it doesn't feel good at all. Is this unusual?

(Alison, Mississippi)
Gah! Of COURSE it'll hurt if you're not actually on your period!

What makes it easy for things to go in and out of you is the fluid that your body creates. Without proper lubrication, inserting and removing things can be really painful.

Tampons are made to, well, absorb fluid. When you put one in without being on your period, it will very quickly absorb the fluid that is in you and stick to the walls of your vagina. That hurts like crazy when you try to take it out. Same goes for if you use a tampon that's too high absorbency for your flow.

Also, keep in mind that you're young, and that your body still has some growing to do. And some women are rather narrow in general. We're all made with the ability to deliver babies, though, so don't worry: when the time comes, you will be able to fit whatever you need to down there. You just might need a little extra lubrication.

Thanks that really helped!

My Personal Forum

My name is Amanda and I'm 26 years old. I'm currently studying electrical engineering. Armed with a fairly odd sense of humour and a sunny outlook on life, I'll take on just about anything. I'm also cussedly stubborn, which has its ups and downs. Things get tough sometimes, and I've never been one to run from it.

In my last 8 years with Advicenators, I've gone from honours student to failing out of university (and getting back on top again!), from single to married, from tenant to homeowner.

Until lately, I have been struggling with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and OCD, which had basically ruined my life and taken just about everything from me. I'm thankful every day for every experience I've had because of this ordeal, because it's helped to make me who I am today. Things like that really make you appreciate what you do have. Now that I'm back in work and school and starting to become myself again, I couldn't be happier. I credit Advicenators with saving my life back when I was a teenager, which is a big part of why I'm still here.

I won't necessarily give you the answers you want to hear, but I'll always be honest and do my best to help.
