Q: Are there any other sites like 4shared.com on the net where you can download free books and stuff??
Any help would be greatly appreciated as 4shared doesn't have the books i'm currently after.
What books are you looking for in particular?

Esnips: (good for other files too, a lot of like 4shared)
http://esnips.com/

Scribd: (really good for academics)
http://www.scribd.com/

What is especially resource is Livejournal communities because you can both share and request a specific book, but you have to join:

^ from there I found "Freakanomics, "Dan Brown's "Lost Symbol", "The Princess Bride", "Memoirs of a Geisha", "I Am Legend", Anne Rice's vampire novel series, etc..
