I had just gotten a kitten for my birthday and I was wondering if there was a way I could get it to slowly stop meowing as much. It also doesn't really like being touched but I think that's because the lady that owned it had his litter outdoors. I'm trying my best to handle him and get him used to being around people but he meows every few minutes. So any ideas on how to calm him down?
I'm guessing you just got him, right? He is probably going to be meowing like that for a while. He misses his brothers and sisters, and is in a new house where everything is really big and towers over him.
Cat's need to be socialized in the first 12 weeks of their lives. This is the period when they basically learn everything that needs to be known about their personality. If he is left outside for those entire 12 weeks, then he will be quite wild for most of his life.
That's the general idea of cats.
If you really want him to stop meowing, then try not to pet him while he meows. Pick him up and set him on your lap so that he doesn't feel scared. If you pick him up and are standing up, then he might think that he will be dropped. If you are sitting down, and he's on your lap, then he will have more protection underneath him and will feel more secure.
While he's on your lap, pet him gently, and talk soothingly to him. Maybe even give him some treats. But, once he cries, stop petting him, only to start again once he stops crying.
This will take a long time at first, since he cries every few minutes. But as time goes on, he will cry less and less, and you won't have to constantly stop petting him.
Also, if you really want to go all out, I've tried this with some pretty scary, wild, angry cats at the Vet's office, and they have calmed down. It might take a while, but, make sure he sees your eyes, and blink, very very slowly. Just keep blinking slowly.
When a cat blinks slowly, it is a calming signal, and means they're calm. Most cats do it when they are purring. If you do this to your kitten, he may start doing it back and feel calmer.
