about

I've been away for a while due to a serious illness and subsequent health issues.

Favourite quotes of the moment:

The children of Israel wandered the desert for 40 years - Even in biblical times men wouldn't ask for directions!

Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. whatever we do to the thread, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect. - Chief Seattle.

We spend the first 12 months of a child's life teaching them to walk and talk. We spend the next 12 years telling them to sit down and shut up!

As you slide down the bannisters of life, may the splinters never be pointing the wrong way.

May you be in Heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.

I've been very happily married since August 1980 to a wonderful man and have beautiful twin girls, now aged 31. Both are married to wonderful young men and one of our girls has recently made us grandparents to a beautiful, smart and feisty granddaughter. I studied geology with the Open University. I am retired from being a manager in a large UK based insurance company which I actually quite enjoyed. (How sad is that?). I love anything to do with the environment and wildlife and try to do my bit for preservation and conservation. I would like there to be a decent world for our grandchildren to inherit. I also have CFS so find life a bit of a challenge at times but always hope for better health in the future.

I have a deep interest in the spiritual and the paranormal worlds, having experienced several incidents myself, and have been involved in meditation groups and groups that (safely) explore the paranormal. There is more to this life than we would normally credit, so an open mind is always the best option. You're not so likely to get caught by surprise!

I have a deep fascination for anything to do with Ancient Egypt, as you can probably tell by my name. I have statues and paintings all around the house. As my hubby has a similar interest in Native Americans, we tend to have a lot of unusual wall decorations, like a tomahawk.

I love cars, especially vintage ones, but my all time favourite has to be the Bugatti Chiron, what a car!

I have had a lot to do with animals over the years. I have fostered many, helped to set up a wildlife charitable hospital and raised a diverse range of young animals from bats to fox cubs and different species of birds, even a baby deer! I have had great pleasure in sharing my life and home with a number of animals over the years, most of them rescues. I am currently sponsoring an Amur Tiger, they are such beautiful cats and desperately need help, there are so few of them left. I was lucky enough a couple of years ago to meet some Aye-Aye's and Livingstone's Bats, a truly wonderful experience. We now have three cats, Oliver and Mollie, a brother and sister, he's a ginger and she's a tortoiseshell and a black and white called Daisy. She arrived in a taxi and was left on our doorstep in a cat carrier with the message that 'they knew we loved cats and would be good to her'. She has settled down well and gets on wonderfully with the other two.

If you have a pet that is showing ANY signs of illness or distress, please, please, please take it to a vet! Even if finance is an issue, work that out later. It is cruel to leave an animal suffering for any reason. Most animals do not show signs of illness until they have been ill for some time, basic instinct tells them it is a display of vulnerability, and certain death in the wild. Their instincts have not caught up with domesticity.

I do feel that we should all treat others as we would wish to be treated. Bad karma comes back to haunt us.

Everybody Hurts - REM, it's sad but inspiring at the same time. It also has the great point of holding on.

I want to know if a yeast infection is really dangerous and if it can kill you. I have had a yeast infection for the last seven years.
It goes away w/ my menstrual and then comes back. I do not take birth control and I am not a diabetic. I have tried all the creams and diflucan also. Nothing worked. And right now I don't have med. insurance. Will the local hospital treat me? I don't want the infection to spread to my intestines. I am 28 years old and I am afraid of this.

As Razhie says, you do need to see a doctor about this. It's not dangerous so much as debilitating in the long run.

In the meantime, try avoiding sugar, spicy foods, coffee, tea and onions. You can also try acidophilus and aloe vera tablets or juice, all of which you can get from a health shop. These introduce healthy bacteria back into the system, stabalises the levels and helps to counteract the yeast overgrowth.

It is a sign of an inbalance so you do need to look at the causes and any underlying health issues. Dealing with those should help to rid your body of the yeast infection. It is very unlikely to go away without help.

I understand that medical insurance can be an issue in the US, but this is something that you really need to try to resolve, for your own sake.

What does a £ translate into for $? I want to shop online but it has the price in £ and not $. Thanks!

That symbol is for British pounds sterling, at the moment it's roughly 1 British pound = 2.0627 U.S. dollars. The euro symbol looks like this €. If that's what you meant the conversion at the moment is around 1 Euro = 1.38200 U.S. dollars.

I have acanthosis nigricans, and ive been taking a kind of medicine that's saposed to help it. There really is no cure, and its not deadly. It's jus a sigh that if I get diabetes, it's a death sentance so yeahh im trying to lose weight and the medicine im using is saposed to get rid of the discoloration. I tried everything before i knew what if was.. and everything hurt ALOT. Well i started using this cream and it showeda diffrence immediatly. It was awsome it was clearing up and now i have blisters on the back of my neck and my moms telling me to stop using it until the doctor figure out why its doing that. But i dont wasnt to I mean it jus started goinf away and its gross looking and everyone at my school thinks I dont shower except a couple people AND I Do its not as easy as soap and water it grows up and out of my skin.. and that cream was my last hope and now i cant use it and i dont wanna be made fun of anymore. So at the moment im crying, lil depressed because I want chocolate and I cant eat it because ill gaina nother 100 pounds and be even fatter and it'll become more black and this SUCKS! I dont wanna tell anyone because i donno what they think and my parents my family no one understand why i feel so hopeless at the moment because its not going away anymore and its gunna get worse and my neck hurts and I just wanna go to bed because im fat, stupid cuz i got my hopes up and they came crashing down and I want chocolate god dammit!

I am so sorry, that must be an awful thing to deal with. Especially if people think it's just dirt. I've had a look at a website and it suggests treatments to just improve the appearance includes Retin-A, 20% urea, alpha hydroxyacids, and lactic or salicylic acid prescriptions. Has the doctor given you anything like this? You could also ask about taking fish oil supplements. It also says that this condition often fades if the underlying cause can be found and treated. So there is hope to hold on to.

If the cream you are using is causing blisters, you really do need to stop using it for now. At least until the doctor has investigated it. The blisters could cause even more problems and you have enough to deal with at the moment.

As for the chocolate, that's a tough one, but if keeping off it for a while helps you to lose weight, you may be able to try a little in a few months. Also, although it will be of little comfort at the moment, usually the longer you go without chocolate the less you crave it. If it's better for your health and wellbeing to diet, go for it. Don't be afraid to let people know you have a health problem, it should help them to understand, and if you try a diet as well, your friends could support you.

Try writing down how you are feeling, pouring everything out in a letter, then either show your parents how badly this has affected you, or burn the letter for release. It may sound strange but it works.

Just try to stay strong, you WILL get through this, just make sure you do everything you can to help yourself and make sure the doctor keeps on top of it as well.

under my armpit are these lumps.. how do i get rid of them? they when i touch them. its not like fat

Get them checked out by your doctor. They may be cysts or something more serious. No one here is going to be able to tell you the answer. The sooner you go to the doctors the sooner you'll know if you can stop worrying about them.

ohkay i always wondered if you go on a website like anything at all and then you delet the history and cookies will it be able to be found again? like on your hardrive. jw

Any decent computer technician can also find deleted items on a hard drive. I have a friend who does this job, and he said that it all just stays in the background and can be retrieved fairly easily.

What era is the movies like Sense and Sensibility or Pride and Prejudice supposed to be from? Is it the 16th century?

All of Jane Austins books are from the early 1800's,(the 19th century). Although Pride and Prejudice was originally written in the late 1700's, it was rewritten 1811-12 and published 1813. The other 5 books were also written between 1811-1817, the last being Persuasion, which was published after her death in 1817 at the age of 41. This time was known as the Regency Era.

Why do some people sleepwalk? My mother has said
I do this now and then.

Should I be concerned? I usually just look out the kitchen window for a few minutes and go back to bed.
Its only happened a couple of times.

There are a variety of reasons why some people sleep walk, and research shows it quite often runs in families. It is more common in children however, and is usually due to anxiety, sleep loss or fatigue.

You shouldn't need to be concerned unless you are prone to hurting yourself during your travels, by bumping into things. Then you would need to look at making your route safer before going to bed. Very few people do anything other than just wander around for a while and then go back to bed.

I have included a website with more information.

Hi. I am new at this. But I think that my friend is Baleemic... I havent talked to her about it yet realy... I just told her she needed to go to the doctor. And she refuses... She is mexican and Im not all that sure she knows what can happen if she keeps doing this to herself. And it scares me. She lost like 40 pounds. And she is ALWAYS... everytime I talk to her... throwing up. Im realy realy scared for her. She is my Best Friend. What can I do? Please help.

Love,
help_a_friend_14

If your friend is suffering from Bulimia she is unlikely to listen to reason. She needs professional help and quickly.

You need to speak to her parents, school counsellor, anyone who will listen and take this seriously. The sooner she gets help the better her chances are of recovery. She will probably be very upset with you for telling anyone, but you must ignore that. Bulimics do try to keep their disorder quiet. She should come round when she recovers and hopefully thank you for caring enough to act.

I have included a website giving the symptoms etc so that you can check to see if you may be correct.

I think I have that cause I had a nasty odor and I douched to get rid of it
Its mostly gone right now but I read something about if you have BV not to douche right after I did and it said it can give you stronger odors and maybe even more infection.
I want to know if this is true cause I'm very scared about it I really don't want anything worse to happen

BV usually has a fishy smell to it and will need antibiotics to clear it up completely. It's quite a common thing for women to get, mostly if they are sexually active.

Douching is generally not a good idea as it disturbs the natural cleansing bacterial system that nature put in place. It is particularly not recommended to do this if you already have BV.

I have included a website with more information, but if you have this, please go to your doctors as left untreated, it could have serious consequences for your health.

Upon waking in the morning, my feet are swollen and extremely painful. Then when I attempt to get out of bed the pain is so much that I can almost not walk or move. However if I do get up and start moving despite the pain I feel better. If it helps, I am 28 and a mother of two...and also having extreme fatigue, but I've tested not positive for another pregnancy.

This also happens if I sit still for any length of time, ie watching a movie, reading a book...anything that keeps me stationary.

Any ideas what this could be?
Help much appreciate!
Celeste

You are unlikely to get an accurate diagnosis on this site, but that should not be happening. You really need to see a doctor. Make a list of all the symptoms as you experience them to ensure you do not forget any.

Then go to the doctors as soon as you can. It may be nothing or it could be serious, only a professional will be able to tell you.

I have this terrible ringing in my ears.
It just came on really suddenly and it wont stop!
I haven't gone to any concerts lately, and I don't play my iPod loud.
It's weird because I cant really hear.
Anybody know what this is or how to stop it?

It sounds like Tinitus, not a nice thing to have and can be difficult to get rid of. You need to see your doctor for a proper diagnosis, but I've included a website to give you more information.

I have a 5-year old Yellow Lab, and I was wondering if I gave her a bath, would it be okay just to use "people" shampoo? We don't have any dog shampoo in the house, & my dad is too cheap to go out and buy any.

Would she be okay?

You shouldn't use human shampoo on any animal as the PH is totally wrong for it. Each one will be formulated particularly for that type of animal.

You can usually get relatively cheap doggie shampoos at a pet shop or superstore.

I've been on pointe for 6 months now, and I have to say that it is the most painful thing ever. We're mostly only doing stuff at the barre right now, but whenever we do anything my circulation is cut off starting at my toes. And I usually get to a point where I feel like my big toe is literally bleeding.

No one else in my class seems to be experiencing any pain.

I'm in russian pointes with regular ouch pouches (used to use plain lambs wool then switched in the same pair of shoes)

should i give up now or endure it?

i really hate ballet, it's just so torturous. but whenever i'm not taking dance classes i miss it really badly. so i don't know how i feel about it after all.

advice appreciated.

I used to soak my toes in Surgical Spirits to toughen the skin and, the same as you, pad my pointes with lambs wool. It did hurt, but my ballet mistress used to say, 'No pain, no gain'. Which didn't really help much, so sympathies on that.

Try the Surgical Spirits if you can get it or the nearest equivalent, it really did help. You also need to check your technique, just to ensure you are doing everything correctly, and that she is not driving you all too fast too soon, as that can cause long term problems.

my nipples are like in. i don't know how to explain it. like they dont stick out. so i dont have any nipples it looks like. but when i touch them they come out a little but then go right back in. can anyone tell me if this is normal?
15/f

If they have always been inverted, it's probably normal to you. It can be caused by having a short milk duct system running from the chest wall.

If it's something that has recently occurred, particularly if you also have any 'puckering' of the skin, you should see a doctor.

i dont remeber if i posted this thing bfore, but its really starting to annoy me. i have a twin sister who i am very jealouse of. she is smarter then me, and she is prettier then me and everything she does is just better then me. even her grades and our parents are alll happy over her and my mom always ends up getting mad at me and telling me to try harder whenever i get my report card. i mean and shes skinner then me and idk what to do about it...like im totally jelouse and ive had a million breakdowns about hating the way i am. idk wat to do anymore. i can't handel being second best. i just need advice. what really gets me is that when we move to Gerogia soon, everything depends on your grades and i dont think im good enough bc shes going to do sooo much better then me. i feel like when we move im just going to be a freak with no life while my sister gets all these friends. im 15/f.

I have twin daughters and trust me, twins are not the same, even if they are identical, and should never be compared with each other. You are different people who have your own personalities and abilities. You say she is smarter than you? Maybe she is, but you will have your own talents, all you have to do is look for and develop them.

The hardest thing is stopping comparing yourself with her. It sounds as though other family members are making the same mistake, which is doing nothing for your self confidence. You need to start acknowledging that you are far from being second best, you're just as good as your sister and everyone else.

Academic ability does not make you great, it's who you are as a person that counts. There is more to life than just being clever. There's compassion, understanding, the ability to make people feel good about themselves, laughter and so many more.

Being thin and attractive also doesn't mean you're a great person, there are plenty of supermodels who can prove that point!

Try to learn to be you, not a poor reflection of your sister, because you're not. Your parents need to learn this fact as well. If you can, you will have a happier life and you will find you are making true friends who don't care about shallow things like what you look like or what your IQ is.

There are lots of people who have changed the world for the better but who would never have been considered brainy. You could be one of them, just give yourself a chance. Look on the move as a fresh start, giving you the chance to find out who you really are, and making friends that will value your individuality.

As long as you are trying your hardest at school, no one can reasonably ask for more. Carry on putting the effort in, but for your sake, no one else's. It's your life and you have to live it, remember your twin is just a sister that was born at the same time. She's not you and you're not her, you're your own person and it's time to start being you.

How do i get my cat to walk on a leash?

If it's necessary for you to walk your cat on a leash, you may find using a harness is easier than a collar. You would need to just leave the harness on the cat without the leash until he/she was used to it.

After the harness has been accepted, attach the leash, but don't try to make your cat follow you, follow it instead, preferably just around the house to start with.

When your cat becomes used to having you following it around, you could try to gently guide it. However, cats do not generally take to leashes so well as dogs, and you may find you have a power struggle on your hands.

does anyone know what bumps growing on skull and cause headaches might be? They grow slowly and are becoming more painful. they are round pea and dime size. When I press on them they hurt and put pressure on my head, sometimes on other side of head. Hair is thining too.

You need to see a doctor about this. It could anything from folliculitis, which can be unpleasant, to something much more serious. No one here is going to be able to diagnose you accurately, you need a medical check up.
Please see someone as soon as you can.
