about

I've been away for a while due to a serious illness and subsequent health issues.

Favourite quotes of the moment:

The children of Israel wandered the desert for 40 years - Even in biblical times men wouldn't ask for directions!

Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. whatever we do to the thread, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect. - Chief Seattle.

We spend the first 12 months of a child's life teaching them to walk and talk. We spend the next 12 years telling them to sit down and shut up!

As you slide down the bannisters of life, may the splinters never be pointing the wrong way.

May you be in Heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.

I've been very happily married since August 1980 to a wonderful man and have beautiful twin girls, now aged 31. Both are married to wonderful young men and one of our girls has recently made us grandparents to a beautiful, smart and feisty granddaughter. I studied geology with the Open University. I am retired from being a manager in a large UK based insurance company which I actually quite enjoyed. (How sad is that?). I love anything to do with the environment and wildlife and try to do my bit for preservation and conservation. I would like there to be a decent world for our grandchildren to inherit. I also have CFS so find life a bit of a challenge at times but always hope for better health in the future.

I have a deep interest in the spiritual and the paranormal worlds, having experienced several incidents myself, and have been involved in meditation groups and groups that (safely) explore the paranormal. There is more to this life than we would normally credit, so an open mind is always the best option. You're not so likely to get caught by surprise!

I have a deep fascination for anything to do with Ancient Egypt, as you can probably tell by my name. I have statues and paintings all around the house. As my hubby has a similar interest in Native Americans, we tend to have a lot of unusual wall decorations, like a tomahawk.

I love cars, especially vintage ones, but my all time favourite has to be the Bugatti Chiron, what a car!

I have had a lot to do with animals over the years. I have fostered many, helped to set up a wildlife charitable hospital and raised a diverse range of young animals from bats to fox cubs and different species of birds, even a baby deer! I have had great pleasure in sharing my life and home with a number of animals over the years, most of them rescues. I am currently sponsoring an Amur Tiger, they are such beautiful cats and desperately need help, there are so few of them left. I was lucky enough a couple of years ago to meet some Aye-Aye's and Livingstone's Bats, a truly wonderful experience. We now have three cats, Oliver and Mollie, a brother and sister, he's a ginger and she's a tortoiseshell and a black and white called Daisy. She arrived in a taxi and was left on our doorstep in a cat carrier with the message that 'they knew we loved cats and would be good to her'. She has settled down well and gets on wonderfully with the other two.

If you have a pet that is showing ANY signs of illness or distress, please, please, please take it to a vet! Even if finance is an issue, work that out later. It is cruel to leave an animal suffering for any reason. Most animals do not show signs of illness until they have been ill for some time, basic instinct tells them it is a display of vulnerability, and certain death in the wild. Their instincts have not caught up with domesticity.

I do feel that we should all treat others as we would wish to be treated. Bad karma comes back to haunt us.

does my period last my whole life or what

Your period is not a life long event. Generally, the menopause arrives around the age of 50, give or take a year or two. It can be a lot earlier in some cases though, but these tend to be rare and either genetically early or due to a medical problem. There will be usually be a gentle lead up to it that will give clues to what is about to happen. The menopause itself can last ten years, sometimes more. There are hormone tablets that can help to relieve the symptoms.

I've included a link to give you more information.

if i feel a lump thats not tender are sensitive in one chord of my testical, is that a sign of cancer. is it normal?

No one here is going to be able to give you a diagnosis. You really need to go to a doctor to get this checked out. The sooner the better as if it's not cancer it'll put your mind at ease. If it is, the sooner it's treated the more chance you have of recovery.

I have a condo, it has a small patio area that was upgraded before I bought it into a wooden deck. So the wooden deck is not original. I needed a lawn for my dog on it so my boyfriend and I cut out a small section of the wood and planted sod. The wood is rotting on it and I will probably end up replacing all the wood anyway. When I cut out the section and put grass there did it bring the value of my condo down?

I would have thought a decent lawn would be better than rotting decking.

You could try asking your local estate agents as they're the ones who would have a good idea on selling points in your area. If decking is better you could go ahead and replace it sometime.

Does anybody know why Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was released in the United States as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone?

From what was said at the time it was because the US were more familiar with the term sorcerer than philosopher. Also that sorcerer had more to do with magic than philosopher.

I have a persian kitten [verry fluffy and full of fur] of course every animal has fleas but we never rally had a problem with ours. Well Lacey, the cat, has them horribly bad and we have given her baths over and over again. got the flea collar. the flea comb. the flea killer stuff to put on her neck. but none of them have been working bc she is still FULL of them! We even gave her a haircut amd she looks like a rat. shes bleeding because of the fleas and everyoen in the family at our household has flea bites. Any help on a HUGE flea problem???

Fleas don't live on the animal, they just use them for transport and food. They are living in your soft furnishings, carpets etc and breed prolifically.

You need to tackle both problems at the same time. Get a really good flea killer, if you can, Skoosh is brilliant, non toxic and safe around animals. You should treat your kitten at the same time with a good flea killer. Check with your vet if you've used a variety of flea killers on her as too many could have a nasty effect at her age.

As fleas can hibernate in your soft furnishings for some months, you should keep this two pronged attack on them going. Even in winter now, with central heating, fleas can be a problem.

Once your house and the kitten are free from fleas, keep the house clear and the kitten should be a lot better. If you use something like Frontline on her once a month, you should never see a flea on her again.

ok so like a week and a half ago my vagina itched but then after a couple days it went away so i thought i was fine. but now i have this horrible pain in my stomach and its really sore and sometimes feels like cramps but usually is just this terrible pain. ive had this pain for over 3 days now!! last night i used some medicine that cures yeast infections and i kno it wouldnt completely sure it the first night but it should have made the pain feel at least a little better but it still hurts really bad and now my back hurts too. i feel really sick and im so annoyed i cant figure out what this is. i looked online and i think it might be a urinary track infection but im not sure. can anyone tell me what it sounds like because it hurts a lot. i know i should go see a doctor but i just moved here a couple days ago and we are trying to unpack my house and we dont know any doctors here yet. its not like a stomach ache like i'm gonna be sick its just like its really sore and hurts A LOT and sometimes the pain makes me feel nauseous. thank you soooo much!!!

Find a doctor, don't wait any longer. If it's an infection, it needs to be treated - now!

If you've been in pain that long it's highly unlikely to get better without medication.

It sounds like it could be a kidney infection, if it is, they are painful and, left untreated, can cause permanent damage. Even if it is not this, you still need to examined by a doctor asap.

Go and find a doctor.

My brother has come to live with us for a bit then he's moving to the other side of the country. But he has a dog and she's staying with us because he can't take her. But the problem is, she only listens to and obeys him. She'll behave around him and then when he's not around she'll become aggressive. Now, she has bitten my brother twice before but that was only when she was around food. But she's so unpredictable. She was in the garage and my cat walked by and the dog walked up, sniffed him, then tried biting him. I was so afraid she was going to hurt him. So how do I get her to STOP being aggressive towards people, animals, and to stop being food aggressive?

She has been around other dogs before, so she's pretty social. Even with cats. Oh yeah, and another question is, how do I get her to listen to me, too? She only listens to my brother and when he's around she wouldn't try to bite my cat. So..yeah. :/

If you are able to buy clickers where you live, you could try one. They work on the theory of rewarding good behaviour and ignoring the bad.

If the dog does something good, you use the clicker, then give it a special treat, like a piece of sausage. Ignore any bad behaviour as though the dog were not there. (You may want to keep the cat out of the way whilst starting this training). The dog will soon understand that the clicking noise relates to a treat and what she was doing at the time. She should then start to become more co-operative and obedient.

A dog's relationship with food is rather intense, and in the wild, other than the Alpha dog, they will generally have to fight for their share. If you feed her dry food, try feeding her by hand initially, as this will let her understand that you are connected with the giving of food and not the removal of it. Never tease her with it and as she gradually learns to trust you around her food, you could let the dog and cat eat their own food in the same room at the same time, supervised of course. She should then learn that the cat is not a threat or competition either.

At the moment she responds to your brother as the Alpha dog in her pack and she needs to learn that in his absence she is not the one who is going to take over. Again, this is instinct, as with the fighting for food. In a pack, there are usually quite vicious fights to establish the pecking order. Obviously you cannot do this, but with the reward system, you should gently be able to encourage her into thinking your way.

You may need to muzzle her in public for a while if you are taking her for a walk, as if she is aggressive outside, you could lose her.

Don't expect to be able to retrain her instantly. Depending on how old she is, she has had a long time to get used to being the way she is.

You will need to bond with her, so don't shout at her or hit her, as this will only make her afraid of you and more defensive. You need to win her trust that as the new Alpha dog, you will protect her if she feels there is a need.

Dogs are quite complex animals and we are only just beginning to realise how emotional they are. She's probably feeling a little disorientated by the move and she's more than likely picking up that something is going on but doesn't know what. So she's become defensive. She needs lots of reassurance, love, walks, treats and training. With patience you should have a valuable new member of the family.

to be happy? i know a person cant make you happy, or at least keep you happy. so where do you find it?

No one person can make you happy, it's something that has to come from within. You need to learn to be happy with who and what you are. Accepting yourself and others for themselves can bring peace.

Accept that if you always try your best, you can do no more and leave it at that. Enjoy every day, finding something special in each one, as though it will be your last. It could be as simple as the song of a bird, or doing someone a good turn.

Learn not to regret but to take each mistake as a learning curve not to do the same thing again, or do it in a different way.

Find your true purpose in life and embrace it. Enjoy what you can do and forget what you cannot do.

Everyone is flawed in some way, that is what makes us human. I'm not particularly religious but this is a prayer I really like as it embraces what we should keep in mind every day. I hope it helps you.

The Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

I was watching this video of Bon Jovi singing Bed of Roses. It was when it first came out. He said that the song was sort of like a confession. What does he mean by that? Did he really cheat on his wife? Please somebody explain.

He says that he wrote in a hotel bedroom following a hangover. I've included a link for more information.

but I have too. For reasons of my own, I have to stop giving advice to the general public if you will. It is nothing here on the site, I have enjoyed helping those I could help. I will, however, pop in once a day to see if anyone has sent me a personal message and answer them, but I will not be reading the general questions any more. So if you need something, or you know someone who needs something, send them to my column.

Everyone, please be well and treat everyone with respect.

Just to fill the need for a question, who sang these lyrics, "I wish you peace when the cold wind blows, a light to guide you through the dark".

I bought this dwarf hamster that has been at my house for about a week now, and she bites EVERYONE. She never did this before. My older sister has known her since she was born in her biology class, and she never bit anyone. Why does she do this, and how can I stop it?

She also doesn't get along with this other hamster we bought two days ago. We put the two hamsters face-to-face to introduce them to each other, and when nothing happened, we put them in the same cage and the one that's been here for a week went nuts. It was like a hamster smack-down... What can I do to stop this, too?

Hamsters are solitary animals and territorial, they don't like to share their space. If you keep them together, things are likely to get a lot worse. You could end up losing one of them. The only time hamsters will be fine sharing a cage is when they are very young or have a mother with babies. Even a male and female hamster don't want to live together.

Adults should have their own cages and be handled every day to prevent them from getting nippy.

hi iam a 24 mum of two who has been struggling to find any easy answers i am still in love with my first love who is in another state, but i have children to another man do i stay for my kids or do i follow my heart and go home?

If you mean taking your children with you, then if you feel that you would be happier with your first love, then follow your heart. If you try to stay with someone you don't love for the sake of not splitting up a family, however noble that may sound, it will make you and subsequently everyone else, miserable. That is not a good atmosphere in which to bring up a family.

You do however, need to ensure you have thought long and hard about what you are intending to do. It is not a decision to take lightly as there is little chance of going back if you find you have made a mistake. Just be sure that it isn't a case of the grass being greener with your first love.

Can an extremely soft bed give you back problems?

A bed should fully support you whilst you are moving around in your sleep. If it does not do this by being too soft, it is entirely possible it could give you back problems. If you are not able to replace the bed or the mattress, you could try putting a plank or two of wood under the mattress to give you the support you need. It's not ideal and not possible with all beds but it may help until you can get a replacement.

im only 16, and i have gray hair. My mom told me i could have "straightened the color right out of my hair" because it doesnt look like normal gray hair. its totally white. she told me it doesnt look normal. has this happened to anyone else?

Colour comes from thr root of the hair and so cannot be 'straightened out'. Losing the colour in the hair is very complicated and is called canities but is basically caused by a lack of pigmentation. There are various causes for premature greying, (depending on your colouring and ethnicity your hair can go white instead of grey).

I have included a web site that gives many reasons for this occurance, some serious, some genetic.

how do you find your real power color?
i don't want some quiz online, really because i took like five and they all gave me different answers
so does anyone know how to find your real one?

thanks :D

I can give you a brief description but it's much more involved than this.

Your full birth date gives you your life path colour, or 'power colour'. Add your date together like this DD + MM + YYYY =. If you get a double number add it together again until you get one number.

1 is red, 2 is orange, 3 is yellow, 4 is green, 5 is light blue, 6 is indigo, 7 is violet, 8 is rose and 9 is gold.

They all have different meanings so if you're interested and want to know what your colour means, or just more information, you can drop a line in my inbox.

Basically what I want to do is to start making different little things, and sell them at craft fairs.. A couple of things i was thinking to make were: painted rocks, clay objects (like buttons, beads, necklaces, frames, bowls, lightswitch covers, puzzles, little things like food, frogs etc.), friendship bracelets, the box bracelet thigns..

my question is are those good ideas, and will they sell? or should i just forget all about it? or are there any other things i could make that sell really well?

also, how do you sign up for a booth at local craft fairs? is there a website?

I do a lot of craft fairs and can tell you how it works in the UK. There's a good chance it's not so different for wherever you are.

You need to be aware that although people like to buy handmade crafts, they're not so keen on the paying the prices for the effort it has taken to make them. If you are not sure what to make, go to a few fairs and look at the type of things that are selling well and see if they are the sort of things you have in mind. There's no point in paying money for the materials if they are not going to sell. If you're looking at selling food, there's always the chance that you would need a Food Hygiene Certificate, so you would need to check this out before starting anything. You need to know your market, all the ideas you have come up with may work better in some areas than others. Do some research and see what people are interested in buying where you live.

If you do find something, work out how much each item costs to make, double the price and then add another third. If this makes it too expensive for people to buy, again, it's not worth making it as you will not be generating enough of a profit to keep going. (If you had a shop and had to pay for premises, you would need to triple the cost.)

You need to factor in other expenses, like the table, energy (heat etc), travelling, and possibly instructions and advertising (like leaflets).

Most craft fairs either belong to a circuit or are staged by a local charity or fund raiser. Every time you see a fair, you will need to find the telephone number or email of the organiser and contact them yourself. Once you have done one fair with each organiser, they will probably keep you on their books and contact you the following year to see if you want to book another table.

My dad is the most hnest peroson i know. But hes been lying to me:: He prommimsed me he doesnt smoke, when i see him do it! When hes going to bed, ill hear the slider door open to the porch, and look out the window.....and there he is smoking. Thats not the first time either. I catch him sometimes really eraly in th morning too sometimes, because i get up really early. Why is he lying?

There could be a number of reasons why he is lying. He may not want to quit or he could be trying to protect you from it in case it affects your health and well being. He quite possibly feels really bad about not being able to stop that he's too ashamed to admit it and does not want to appear weak to his daughter. This may be totally misplaced guilt, but an understandable parent thing, on his part as it is so hard to quit.

He sounds as though he needs your support and understanding with this problem. There are various products available now to assist him and maybe you could talk to him about it. Be careful to not sound accusatory as this may make him defensive and more difficult to help.

Let him know you're worried about him and his health and how badly it would affect the family if anything happened to him. Support goes a long way in helping anyone kick a habit.
