Does anybody know why Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was released in the United States as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone?

From what was said at the time it was because the US were more familiar with the term sorcerer than philosopher. Also that sorcerer had more to do with magic than philosopher.
