Yes it can. I grew up sleeping on a somewhat firm mattress since I was little. It's what makes me feel comfortable.. so every time i sleep over at my friend's house.. her whole family has soft beds and honestly, i never sleep. i stay up all night because of it. my back is stiff and i always have to make my boyfriend give me a back rub :x

You have to find a mattress that conforms to your pressure points and supports the natural curves of your spine. So nothing too soft that you see a mold of your body and nothing too hard to make you feel stiff.

A bed should fully support you whilst you are moving around in your sleep. If it does not do this by being too soft, it is entirely possible it could give you back problems. If you are not able to replace the bed or the mattress, you could try putting a plank or two of wood under the mattress to give you the support you need. It's not ideal and not possible with all beds but it may help until you can get a replacement.
