hi.
yesterday my uncle was using our pc to download movies and put them on his harddrive. he was doing complex things, which i dont understand, like formatting his external hard drive etc.
so i switch the PC off, and then go on (it was slow) and i get the usually compaq picture at the begining. then in black and white, i get:
"disk I/0 error replace the disk and then press any key"
i dont know what it means, and so just press any key, and this is what comes up:
"DISK BOOT FAILURE INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER "
what is the problem. im a student and have lots of computer work to do. im currently using a public computer, and cannot keep doing this as i had important stuff on it. help anyone? whats the problem and how do i solve it? btw, its a compaq PC, with an 80gb and 5gb harddrives (i think!) help please? cheers.
Do you have a floppy in the computer? Floppies must not be inserted into a computer during startup, or you will get that error.
Remove any external drives or flash drives connected to your computer. Your computer might be trying to boot from them.
Go into BIOS (hold DEL during startup) and check the boot order. Check that your boot drive is the first drive in the order.
If your boot drive is definitely the first drive in the boot order, then the file system is probably damaged. Take the computer to a data recovery specialist. You might still be able to recover your data. Don't take it to a regular tech support place, they won't know what to do with it and will probably make your data unrecoverable by accident.

is there any way to get your files to move wherever you want and stay that like you can move your icons on your desktop wherever and not have them line up by name? hopefully this makes sense.
In the explorer (folder) window, deselect View -> Auto Arrange (in the File, Edit... top menu). If Auto Arrange is greyed out, select View -> Details. In either case, it should now remember where you drag your folders. However, Vista is especially prone to forgetting your placement, so don't rely on this too much.
Extra info:
Auto Arrange is greyed out in the "details" and "list" view. It will never remember your placement in "list" view, and it will always remember your placement in "details" view. List view is very similar to details, so you can just change it. In all the other view modes, Auto Arrange works like on the desktop.

Do you get vitamin D from sunlight through windows?
UVB radiation is required for the synthesis of vitamin D, but not much UVB radiation penetrates glass. Google says 95% of UVB is blocked.

I need a DVD decoder so that I can watch DVD's on my computer. I have a DVD drive, when I put it in nothing happens. I put it in the CD drive, it comes up, i go to play it and it says you do not have a compatible DVD decoder. I went to download.com to get one but i don't even know where to start. I would prefer a free download, but i will be willing to invest like 10-15 if I have to. If that's unrealistic then let me know. Thank you.
Download K-Lite Codec Pack Full:
http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm
To avoid problems, I recommend you close all of the programs you have running before installing the codec pack. Also, turn off your antivirus and antispyware if possible.
Run the installer you downloaded. Click next three times. On the fourth screen, choose "Profile 8: Lots of stuff (without player)" from the dropdown. Click next two times. On the sixth screen, I recommend you use these settings:
-Reset all settings to their defaults: checked
-Create file associates for: checked
-Windows Media player: selected
-Video formats: checked
-Audio formats: checked
-Make thumnail generation...: checked
-Hide systray icons: checked
-Speaker setup: change to your speaker setup
-[AC3Filter] Boost voice/dialog volume: UNchecked
-Check for codec...: UNchecked
Everything else I recommend you leave at the default values.
Click next once and install. Restart your computer once it's done, and WMP should play your DVDs.

How do i export my flash game? I finally got the basics of making the actual thing but anything beyond and i'm lost. so... i was wondering if anyone could tell me how to send a flash game i made to my friend and family (sort of like an e-card) without it being online.
cheers!
In Flash, go to file -> publish settings. Check ONLY "Windows projector (.exe) and click "publish". Flash will create a .exe file in the same folder your Flash project file is in. Send this to your family in an attachment. It will play on any Windows computer, even if they don't have Flash Player installed. If you have family who use Mac computers, also check "Macintosh projector" and send those people the .hqx file.
It would be easier for everyone if you just put the video online and sent them the URL. To do that, go to file -> export -> export movie in Flash. Save as something.swf. Create a free account here:
http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/
Upload the .swf file. Send your family the direct URL given to you by hotlinkfiles.

Hello, I asked this question before:
"Just bought an ipod and im not really sure how to add videos off my computer onto my ipod.
I tried adding a wmv file, a 3gp file and an avi file and none will work. Should I be converting them? How do I do it and what do I convert them to?
It wont do it automatically."
Thankyou for your answer, but is it possible to convert the file on a site such as Zamzar? And if so how do I do it?
Thanks.
Probably not. Zamzar only accepts files up to 100MB in size, which is about 10 minutes in length. If you have video smaller than that or if you obtain a Zamzar paid account, use "ipod" or "iphone" for Step 2.
Other online video conversion services have similar limits. And you also have to upload the entire 100MB, which could take hours. For video, you really have to convert it offline.

Install and run this:
http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/
Click "add video", and select your video. The video must be a video file, not a DVD. Search "dvd ripper" for software that will get a valid file off of a DVD, and ask me another question if you have trouble.
In the upper right of Any Video Converter, choose "Customized MP4 Movie". In the lower right, change Video Size to 640x480. Also, make sure that none of the values are higher than these:
Video Bitrate: 1500
Video Framerate: 30
Audio Bitrate: 160
Sample Rate: 48000
Click "Encode". Once it's finished, go to File -> open output folder. Move the output file to your iPod in the same way you move music.
Tell me if this doesn't work. I don't have an iPod to test it on.

i used to use limewire as my source for free reliable music downloads; however it proved unreliable cause i got a virus from it.
does a similar free reliable music download source exist, or should i just suck it up and use iTunes?
thank you.
You got a virus because you downloaded a virus, not because of a fault in Limewire. Anyone can upload anything they want to Limewire, and they can name it anything they want. All similar services operate the same way. You have to either learn to differentiate music from viruses or use legal methods like iTunes.
For information on how to identify viruses, read my guide here:
http://www.advicenators.com/talkaboutmetopic.php?t=645&userboard_id=38985
I recommend Shareaza instead of Limewire:

I list many programs similar to Limewire here:

hi Theymos!
I have big troubles with this computer and the drives it has! The drives suddenly stopped reading discs. it says insert disc even when there is a known good disk in there. I have checked the master/slave jumpers, replaced the cable, tried other drives, uninstalled the drivers and let them detect and install again all with the same problem!
the drives show up in my computer and there are no errors in hardware manager. I searched and found the registry thing where you delete the upper and lower filters and did it but still no drives work.
Can you help me?
I'm not sure. I would put my Windows XP or Vista Installation Disk in the CD drive and restart. If the phrase "Press any key to boot from CD..." appears on your screen, then you know it's a software problem. In that case, I would rule out application problems, then reinstall Windows if that doesn't work. If that text doesn't appear on screen, then it's probably a problem with your motherboard or BIOS.
In the second case, I would experiment with the BIOS settings (hold del during startup or follow the onscreen instructions). See if changing BIOS settings applicable to the CD-drive fixes it.
Optical drives (CD, DVD) are very fragile. It's possible that multiple drives you own are broken. Just to be sure, I would try them in a different computer.
If you still can't fix it, ask here:
http://protonic.com
They know more than me.

im trying to make a scroll box for my myspace about me section. I have words and pictures. i make the scroll box and only about two of my things get in the scroll box and the rest is just gone. Does anyone know what to do?
In the code you are using, look for "overflow:hidden". Change it to "overflow:auto".
Here is an example scroll box. Change the "height" and "width" for a different size box. Pixels (px) are small, so you should change size in increments of 20px or more. You can also use, for example, 4in or 10cm.

Heyy, i was wondering about lucid dreaming or conscious dreaming. (dreaming while being aware that you are in a dream and therefore can control what you do in the dream.)

I have this picture:
http://i33.tinypic.com/9k6red.png
Where the screen is, I want to put a scroll box with text (size 10 verdana if it matters) to put the artists on like on my myspace. How do I do this?
This will do it:
Your text here.
Remove the space after http://. I had to put that there so it wasn't automatically turned into a link.
The border in the first div is necessary for this to work properly on Gecko browsers. The color doesn't matter, there just needs to be a border. I don't know why; this is valid HTML and CSS.
The first URL is the URL of the picture.
The first set of dimensions are the dimensions of the picture.
Background-color is the color of the text box. Remove background-color:white to make it transparent.
The second set dimensions (in the second div) are the dimensions of the text box.
Margin-left is the area to the left of the text box, including the border. Same for margin-top.
I included Verdana, its proper fallback fonts, and the text size.
Change overflow:auto to overflow:scroll if you want there to always be a scroll bar, even when the contents of the box will fit within completely within the box.

Hello-
I can't seem to download iTunes onto my computer, it will go as far as the last step (i think), and then this message displays:
Error writing to file:C:\Program
Files\iTunes\iTunes.Resources\en.lprog\Apple TV
Help.chm. Verify that you have access to that directory.
Why does this keep happening?
I am the administrative user.
If this helps I have a Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop.
Also I tried calling the company and they can't do anything for me. Should I try just bringing it to a speacialist to fix this, and how much will that cost.
Your help is appreciated. Thank You.
You need to give yourself full permissions in C:. Go to "my computer". Right click C:\ and click "properties". In the new window, click the "security" tab. Click "edit". Click "Add". Enter your exact user name in the text box and click "ok". If you entered your user name correctly, it will now be listed under "group or user names". Click it. In the lower section of this window, check the "Allow" box next to "full control". Ok all windows. Restart. You should now be able to install iTunes.
If not, try disabling UAC (Google "disable uac").
If that still doesn't work, contact me. There are some things that I could try.

Is it true that each time you turn on your computer your electric bill goes up more. They say that its best to just put the computer on sleep instead of turning it off.
Computers use a lot of electricity when they are on. Turning on your computer, though, doesn't use any *extra* power. Sleep mode uses less power, as does turning off your monitor. Hibernation uses no power at all.

I'm considering a PSP gaming system for Christmas, since I travel a lot and need entertainment(The DS isn't for me :P)
I was wondering though,
Can you use the PSP to go to internet sites. For example advicenators or google or whatever? (Obviously if WiFi is available)
Thanks! :)
Yes. With no touchscreen or keyboard, though, don't be expecting to write much. Even just entering URLs are a pain.

I am about to fuck up my computer.
Something happened and everything started going wrong. Pop-ups are showing up. But I have a good pop-up blocker. These things are popping up without an internet browser, so whatever the fuck this is, it is on my hard drive now. My computer is getting slow and fucking up. I went to system restore and every restore date is gone except 15 minutes ago and that one says, "Last Known Good Configuration."
I'm scared to use it, because now I really think I will fuck up my computer. What is going on? Somebody help me. ASAP.
P.S. I am not signing into any e-mails or anything, until I get to the bottom of this.
Go to start, run (or press WinKey+R). Type:
msconfig
Go to the "startup" tab. Click "disable all". Go to the "services" tab. Check "Hide all Microsoft services", then click "disable all". Make sure you check "hide all Microsoft services"; if you don't, bad things will happen.
Click "ok" and restart. If you get an "access is denied" error, contact me.
When you restart, the popups should not appear, but some things will be broken. Follow these steps to remove the popups from your system:
-Install all of these antispyware programs, update them, scan your computer, and remove all of the spyware they find.
http://spybot.info/index2.html
http://tinyurl.com/6h5qev
http://www.superantispyware.com/
http://www.spywareterminator.com/
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
http://tinyurl.com/6bb67 (update not necessary)
-Restart your computer.
-Uninstall all of those antispyware programs. Especially superantispyware. The last one can not be uninstalled.
Go to start, run (or press WinKey+R). Type:
msconfig
In the "startup" tab, click "enable all". In the "services" tab, check "hide all microsoft services". Then click "enable all". Click ok and restart. The problem should be fixed. If not, contact me.
To prevent this problem in the future, regularly scan with any TWO of the antispyware programs listed above, except the last one (I recommend Spybot and Malwarebytes). Also, install any ONE of these antivirus programs (I recommend Avast):
http://avast.com
http://free-av.com/
http://antivirus.comodo.com/
http://avg.com

If you can't actually boot into your computer, hold down F8 while starting the computer and choose "safe mode". Then start from the beginning of this answer.

I really need money but no where hires people my age for jobs
How an I convince my parents to let me join that site?
Yes, I've made money there. You'll make at most $30 per week; it's not a lot of money.
Cashcrate pays you for signing up with *other* sites. These other sites, which are not controlled by Cashcrate, will spam, call, and mail you. You should therefore not give them your real phone number and address unless you want to follow through with the offer. I recommend you use a spamgourmet email:
http://www.spamgourmet.com/
You do need to give Cashcrate itself accurate information. They will not spam you, and they'll only call once to confirm your phone number.
I don't see why your parents would have a problem with the site. It's entirely safe if you don't give accurate information on the offers. A credit card is not required for most of them, and Cashcrate tells you when one is.
Consider using my referral link to sign up:

okay so i forgot my linksys router password and i need to log into it. ive tried putting in admin as the password and the username and both at the same time. i think i need to reset it, but i have 3 computers, and i need to make sure before i reset it that it will all be back to normal again! so if i reset it, what am i going to need to do to get things back to normal?
The default password is "admin". Leave the username blank.
To reset, hold down the reset button for 30 seconds.
If you have cable Internet and all three computers are connected directly to the router, then nothing further is required. If you have DSL, you'll probably need to set up PPPoE using the settings given to you by your ISP. If some of the computers are connected wirelessly, you'll need to set up wireless:
-Enable wireless
-Set security to WPA2 personal - AES
-Set a password

Apparently, some people are offended by Christmas trees in public areas because it is a Christian thing (or so they say). I heard some people talking about this in the WalMart here today. I'm really confused about why someone would be offended by Christmas trees, even if they weren't Christian.
Does the Bible even mention anything about Christmas trees relating to Christianity though?
I, personally, don't see Christmas trees as religious and I just can't understand why someone who doesn't celebrate Christmas would be offended by a Christmas tree. So, this now has me thinking about how the tradition of Christmas trees actually happened. Someone told me that Christmas trees aren't Christian at all and that they came from something called Pagan. What is true about Christmas trees?
Can someone shed some light on this, please?
Wikipedia covers this topic extensively:
