DVD Decoder for Windwos Media Player for Windows XP

Question Posted Tuesday December 2 2008, 3:49 pm

I need a DVD decoder so that I can watch DVD's on my computer. I have a DVD drive, when I put it in nothing happens. I put it in the CD drive, it comes up, i go to play it and it says you do not have a compatible DVD decoder. I went to download.com to get one but i don't even know where to start. I would prefer a free download, but i will be willing to invest like 10-15 if I have to. If that's unrealistic then let me know. Thank you.

Your problem is simple. A DVD will not work in a cd drive.

The reason nothing happens when you place it in your DVD drive is because it is an incompatible type(most likely dvd-R).

If this is not your case, I would check DVD copy world. www.dvdcopyworld.com

Download K-Lite Codec Pack Full:
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

To avoid problems, I recommend you close all of the programs you have running before installing the codec pack. Also, turn off your antivirus and antispyware if possible.

Run the installer you downloaded. Click next three times. On the fourth screen, choose "Profile 8: Lots of stuff (without player)" from the dropdown. Click next two times. On the sixth screen, I recommend you use these settings:
-Reset all settings to their defaults: checked
-Create file associates for: checked
-Windows Media player: selected
-Video formats: checked
-Audio formats: checked
-Make thumnail generation...: checked
-Hide systray icons: checked
-Speaker setup: change to your speaker setup
-[AC3Filter] Boost voice/dialog volume: UNchecked
-Check for codec...: UNchecked
Everything else I recommend you leave at the default values.

Click next once and install. Restart your computer once it's done, and WMP should play your DVDs.
