i'm not sure how to word this properly. i'm 23/f and my entire life i've been curious as to whether or not i am as smart as someone my age should be. i don't feel like i'm quick witted and i never did well in school. i'm not sure how well i retain knowledge because i smoke weed, also. of course no one around me can answer this honestly because of fear that my feelings will get hurt. but i want to know. so i guess my question is what tests can i take or what can i do to find out this information?
Let me start by switching out the term smart which can be a relative term to something more appropriate - intelligence. Now, did you know that there is something out there called the theory of multiple intelligences? It was developed by Harvard University professor Howard Gardner. Basically, it means that people can be "smart" in different ways and I'm more than willing to bet you fall into at least one of his categories.
Work on your self esteem, try to kick the weed habit and don't worry about how smart you are as that we are all intelligent in different ways. [ Pittguy's advice column | Ask Pittguy A Question ]

Don't trust any of those online IQ tests. They're notoriously unreliable. A real, paper IQ test takes (I think) several hours to complete. You might find it interesting to take a real IQ test, though you have to pay for that. And I don't think that this is really necessary.
Lots of really smart people do poorly in school. Don't worry about that.
I think that a good way of evaluating yourself is to look at what you've created. Like maybe you've made some nice paintings, or you've written some useful computer programs, or you were an important contributor to a big project/proposal at work, or something like that. How have you added to "the collective works of Humanity"? And if you haven't created very much, you should try to change that. Even the *attempt* will make you smarter and better. Terrible in school, also smoke weed, etc. I've come to the conclusion that nothing really catches my interest long enough to want to learn about it or have an interest in it. But I don't think that means we are dumb. Just takes a lot to catch our interest. As far as tests I would recommend possibly an add/adhd test. This sometimes is a symptom of what you're feeling. There are intelligence tests you can take as well but in my opinion, tests don't amount to anything the human brain is actually capable of. A test should not be the deciding factor or "smartness". If you score anywhere around 100 than you are normal for a 20-something year old. I did one the other day and got 106. [ thedonwind's advice column | Ask thedonwind A Question ]
solidadvice4teens answered Wednesday October 21 2015, 11:44 pm: I doubt you are "dumb" or have any developmental issues or intellectual ones. If you were different from peers and unable to understand or progress at same rate your teachers would be all over it. They would have tested for learning and other difficulties with a psychologist or your doctor would have told your parents you weren't capable of doing what your peers could do at certain ages.
I think you are fine but doubt yourself. Youdon't have to be quick witted to be smart. I think your problem is what you hit on earlier drug usage and it clouding your ability to think straight and to recall anything. If you quit doing weed you may find you fare better mentally and psychically. [ solidadvice4teens's advice column | Ask solidadvice4teens A Question ]

Some peoples minds work faster than others and some are able to come up with more creative ideas than others. I consider myself fairly average in intelligence. Met my 2nd husband over 6 yrs ago and from what he wrote me and how he talked, I believed that he was way above me in intelligence. He'd done some psychology and study of human behavior and personalities and also has a gifting for being able to figure out people from just meeting them. When I told him I told my intelligence was far beneath his, he told me that from all our initial conversations, he'd come to know that I was just as intelligent as others and even more so in life experience and the kinds of stuff that books, classes and tests can't show you and he began to list those qualities I have. I have to agree with him. It makes sense. It is more about believing in oneself than having lots of degrees and initials behind ones name. Unless you smoke put 24/7 your mind should be clear at times to be able to think. I use it for insomnia at night and it doesn't affect my ability to be smart. In fact, I have often found that I know more in common sense, and logic and life experience than some people who only know what they know from a book, relying on only what the book says. If its not in the book, they dont believe in it, that it exists, that there is another way or path, they can't accept another view and adamantly will state til their dying breath that its only correct their way. History has shown many with that kind of view point and supposed smarts to be entirely wrong. And who showed them to be wrong, those like you are me who dared to look at things at different way. Once upon a time, everyone believed the world was flat just because some scholars of importance said so and believed so.
