Today I was taking my dog out for a walk and this other dog came out of no where from behind us. My dog turned around and lunged at her and did this teeth snapping thing twice. Eventually the owner came and got their dog while I was pulling to get my dog away from the other dog. I had to pick my dog up and walk away (She's big and heavy.) I just want to know what it means. She snapped twice at the air, and the poor dog that came from behind looked like she was really excited to see my dog.

Hope it is nothing serious! :) [ June's advice column | Ask June A Question ]
pinkpolkadots answered Saturday April 19 2014, 2:42 am: It was probably a warning bite. If she'd intended to actually bite the dog, she would have. However, she was probably not pleased that this other dog "came out of nowhere" as you say. She was probably just as surprised as you, and even if she otherwise enjoyed the company of other dogs, it can be off-putting to have someone sneak up on you when you are not expecting it. The snapping was her way of saying, 'hey, I'm not going to tolerate this type of meeting. back off.'
Don't feel bad for the other dog. Dogs are social creatures and they learn through these interactions what is and isn't okay in terms of dog culture. If that dog sneaks up on enough other dogs and gets snapped at, he's going to think twice before doing it again. [ pinkpolkadots's advice column | Ask pinkpolkadots A Question ]
musicmaniac94 answered Friday April 18 2014, 7:40 am: It sounds like a territorial thing. Your dog probably felt the presence of another dog was alarming and she wanted to stand her ground and "protect" you. That's what it sounds like to me. Imperfectionist answered Tuesday April 15 2014, 4:35 pm: Well I mean it really depends on your dog. Your dog might have been worried about your safety or just wasn't a fan of that dog in particular. Because I don't know your dog that could be how your dog plays. But also keep in mind some dogs just don't like other dogs or get along with them. So that is also a possibility. oneway answered Monday April 14 2014, 11:35 pm: Well there are many reasons for this... if the dogs were of the same sex it may not like the idea of being friends.....the dog could of gotten scared.......or even jealous , my dog hates when I touch any animal or one is too close to me..snapping at the air could mean that your dog didnt want to hurt the other , rather it was just warning it .. jaredntina answered Sunday April 13 2014, 1:48 pm: I would say you'r dog was being protective of you and warning the dog to not come any closer. That's the only thing I can think of as to why a dog would do that. [ jaredntina's advice column | Ask jaredntina A Question ]
