SophieAldric answered Thursday January 31 2008, 8:21 pm: Spanish is America's second language.
French...is a language to learn just for the fun of it.
Latin is never used unless you want to be a scientist/historian/lawyer. [ SophieAldric's advice column | Ask SophieAldric A Question ]
uisforukelele answered Thursday January 31 2008, 7:22 pm: i'd say spanish, definitely. is your friend planning on doing something like being a history major, or getting a doctorate? if so, then latin would be useful too... however, she would use spanish way more in daily life since she lives in florida. i live where there are many spanish influences and learning spanish has really helped me. besides that, it's an easy language. Siren_Cytherea answered Thursday January 31 2008, 3:19 pm: All romance languages are interrelated in some ways. Latin is kind of the base language, but it doesn't really help with other languages.
I took 7 years of French (well, 8 now), and I love it - it sounds beautiful and it was easy for me.
Spanish, though, is a pretty useful language, since there are a lot of people in the US who speak it. It's good for getting jobs, too.
So overall, I'd recommend Spanish as the most useful.
I'd still pick French though. =D
Good luck!

theymos answered Thursday January 31 2008, 10:01 am: I took German, and I really regret it. If I could, I would choose Latin. It's much more interesting, since it includes history, and it allows you to read old documents. Scientific classification is also based on latin.
KristinaKinesthetic answered Thursday January 31 2008, 9:57 am: I'd also have to say Spanish. French isnt very practical unless she's planning on living somewhere in Europe. & a lot of employers these days are more likely to hire someone who can speak Spanish, rather than French, coz it is the 'unofficial second language of the US'
Latin I wouldn't reccommend, because it IS a dead language, and learning one language that you dont particularily like, just so its easier to learn another language is pretty much pointless. (and a lot more work!)
I hope she ends up taking something that she'll use later on- or is at least able to decide what to take before deadlines are up & she gets placed in some horrid thing like computer tech. (at least, that's how it goes over here) :] [ KristinaKinesthetic's advice column | Ask KristinaKinesthetic A Question ]
icey0990 answered Thursday January 31 2008, 2:22 am: i took French in high school but honestly i would recommend Spanish. A lot more people in the U.S speak the language and it can come in handy for jobs, etc. My personal opinion is that it will come in handy more. [ icey0990's advice column | Ask icey0990 A Question ]
