offensive?

Question Posted Thursday January 10 2008, 9:15 pm

"God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve."

Would people take that as really offensive? I read it on the internet and we're making a poster on social justice and I was wondering if I should put that sentence in it somewhere.

If you support gay marriage, why not just put this sentence on your poster instead? "Make room for Adam and Steve, not just Adam and Eve!"

"Social Justice
The belief that every individual and group is entitled to fair and equal rights and participation in social, educational, and economic opportunities. The agenda for increasing understanding of oppression and inequality and taking action to overcome them."

From link:

That statement does not represent social justice, considering gay people are included in those entitled to fair and equal rights, etc.

I have nothing against anyone for their sexual preferences. Gay people are fine with me.
I, personally, don't find the statement offensive, because I believe in my American rights and freedoms granted to me by the great Constitution of the United States.

You have the right to believe that is a good statement.
I have the right to believe it shows lack of intelligence.

This line is a slogan against homosexuality, so obviously it would offend people who are gay or believe in gay rights. The use of God as a justification for homophobia might also offend some religious people.

I would not recommend the quotation for your poster.

Most importantly, how it is relevant to your poster on social justice? If you want to include it, at least make sure it is right for the topic of your poster.

WittyUsernameHere answered Friday January 11 2008, 3:19 am:
You should not use that sentance.

Its based in irrational religious hatred of homosexuality. If you are making a poster for social justice then that sentance could be described as the exact opposite sentiment of "social justice" and you should disregard it.

some people could be offended... it just depends. regardless of my sexuality, i support gay relationships, but i would not take offense to that because it is an uneducated statement. here's the thing: america is based on free speech, freedom of religion, etc. so if somebody who does not believe in your god reads that, it will not mean anything to them. that's why i don't ever use religion when i'm discussing politics with somebody. regardless of my own religion, i don't force my beliefs on other people and i don't think it's right to be subjected to that. anyway, this has been a weird tangent, but i would find another phrase because that one is kind of old anyway.

Well anyone who believed gay marriage is perfectly just and acceptable could certainly take offence, but I imagine most supporters of gay marriage would simply see it as amazingly naive and inane.

That, and it's a rather old saying, practically a cliche. Make sure you wont get in trouble for plagiarism from your teacher... It certainly is far from original.

If you goal is to persuade someone, it's also not the least bit effective.

Personally, I think it's hilarious, but let me tell you something. I joined a group on facebook that said exactly that, and one of my friends was looking at my groups and saw it. She was completely offended, even though she wasn't gay herself, just had a lot of gay friends. After thinking about it, I left the group. One of my best friends is gay, and it doesn't make me think any less of him. My advice to you is to not put that on your poster. Some people would definitely find it funny, but most probably won't, and I wouldn't take that risk. Hope that helped. :]

i think its GREAT! ahem i am totally against gay marriage and think its truly wrong. i am not mean to pple because they are gay but will freely say i dont agree at all and i think its funny and witty and you should use it! lifes offensive-deal with it hahaha. im sure they have heard critisism before and if you think its wrong and think that is a good way of cleverly making your point there is NOTHING wrong with it. let pple disagree it only means i have stated my view clearly and well. and i dont think its offensive because if they are gay they 1 dont believe in God anyway or 2 think God accepts them as gay which isnt true because its going against God. he may still love them but he knows its wrong and that they are sinning so i find nothing wrong with it at all
hope i helped :]

It could be offensive if the person reading it is gay, or sympathizes with gay rights.

I think it is a bit funny, but after the initial humor of it, it just sounds mean and evangelistic.

Why would you put that on a poster for social justice? just wondering.
