Why doesn't anybody believe in God anymore?

Question Posted Friday June 15 2007, 11:48 am

I'm friends with at least 6 Athiest people. I don't really want to change them. It's just why doesn't people believe in God? My one friend say me wearing a cross to school one day and told me to take it off. I asked her why. She said some very unkind things about God. Then she said, How can God be real if he doesn't save anybody from death? I couldn't answer that. SI asked around and found out she wasn't always Athiest. She used to believe in God until her grandparents were murdered. Since me and my friends live in a town with drug dealers, malesters, and murderers, it's common for people to get hurt, but i'm not scared of the people in my town, but my friend scares me saying too many rude things about God. What do I do?!

I'm an atheist, a strong onee... but I don't want to change you.
I just find it hard to believe in something that hasn't been proven, especially with all the terror going around in the world and all the unfairness. Like starving children in Mayalsia, and the racism in Darfur and those killings.
So what is God doing now?
Anyways thats the answer to the title "Why doesn't anybody believe in God anymore?"
But WEAR the cross if you want it. I actually want a tattoo of a cross on my ankle, even though I'm actually very anti-religion. I think its cool.
just like you said up there "I don't really want to change them" your friends shouldn't want to change you. So tell them that they will have to learn to accept your differences, and you can even say that your not trying to make them believe in god and jesus and all that crappp.
You should always think about the other person, just like she should have thought about you when she said take off the cross.
:]

I read and reread your question. The thing that kept coming to my mind is you are evidently a light for God in a very dark place. These people are angry at God and because His light shines through you, they seem to be thrashing out at you. What I suggest you do is fan the flame that's in you, so when these friends throw these questions at you, you are ready with an answer.

As far as the question "How can God be real if he doesn't save anybody from death?" One needs to understand where death came from in the first place. Death entered the world through a simple act of disobedience.

God gives each person a free choice. When Adam and Eve (the first people) were created, they were perfect. They lived in the Garden of Eden and could eat from every tree accept one, the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, because if they did eat from it, they would surely die. Eve chose to eat from the forbidden tree and then gave some to Adam who also chose to eat. When they disobeyed God, their relationship with God died, separating them from Him and the process of physical death began. They acquired knowledge of evil. Before that they knew only good. Now every person since then is born with a sinful nature, lives in a sinful world and physically dies. However, God loved the world so much that He sent Jesus. (John 3:16) Jesus is the doorway back to a relationship with God. Our bodies still die, but those who have Jesus are saved from spiritual death because those who have Jesus have the hope of heaven.

Read your Bible. Pray for understanding. And you may want to read the questions and answers on my column. I think you will get a lot of reading them. If these friends throw a question at you again that you can't answer, don't hesitate to ask me for help. [smile]

Because when people become baffled and confused they begin to doubt. The doubt manifests and they find a new belief.

As a Atheist I can tell you that I think that was really, really rude of your friend and she's making other atheists look bad.

I don't believe in God because if he exists, he's really, really cruel. Look at all the awful stuff that's happened and is happening in the world. Darfur, Sierra Leone, terrorists, child soldiers, racism...surely if God could do such miraculous things in the bible then he can at least help you with today's problems. I've tried but I simply cannot force myself to believe in god.

Your friend's logic is off, though. People have to die, even from non-natural causes. Otherwise the world would be even more overpopulated (it already is). This may just be a phase your friend is going through. She sounds very hurt and angry and talking about it would probably help her.

I'm an atheist, but it was a decision made by me after learning about religion, and deciding that I really didn't believe in it.

As an atheist, I'm going to tell you that your friend's conduct is wrong. Everyone has the right to their beliefs.

Next time she starts in on it, interrupt her, and let her know that you are not forcing your beliefs upon her, so she should respect your right to believe what you choose. Don't debate it with her, because often that comes across as pushing religion. Tell her that you have your own reasons for believing what you believe, just like she does.

It is too bad about your friend being mean to you about your beliefs in God. You have the right to believe what you want, in this country. We have FREEDOM of Religion. And she does not have the right to tell you to take off your cross. YOu must know that God has asked us to believe in him even when no one else does, even when bad things happen, and even when we have doubts. There is a good book out called When Bad Things Happen to Good People. It kind of explains why we should still believe in God even when something bad happens like your friends grandparents being murdered. I do believe that everything happens for a reason. We are all here on earth to learn lessons. The lessons of human emotions. until we are pure. So we need to learn to LOVE unconditionally, (ourselves and our fellow man) be charitable, be kind, have hope.
Not be selfish, and do not break God's or Man's laws. It is not unsuall for young people to think they are atheists when they learn about all of the bad things that happen in the world. But often, when the find true love and happiness, and marry, and then give birth, they realize the miracle of life. Often they pray to God that their child will be healthy. Remain Safe. etc, etc. You must give your friend time to find out these things for herself. You can be an example. Let her see how your love for God does not waver even when things go wrong for you. Good luck to you. It is nice of you to care about your friend in this way.

defend your beliefs... don't freak out at her but you have a right to wear a cross if you want to. tell her it's not God's fault that bad things happen to good people... God gave people free will & that's how there are murderers and dealers. just tell her taht you respect her beliefs and she should respect yours. <3

Everbody has diffrent beliefs. I don't know who she believes in , but not even them can save anybody from death. EVERYBODY DIES FOR A REASON. why dont you try telling her that. When god wants people to go , then he takes them. It was her grandparents time to go , bottom line. I think she's being a little stuck up to tell you the truth , and if you took your cross off thats where you were in the wrong. Just because you don't believe in the same thing she does , doesnt mean she should be acting like an idiot. Tell her how you feel , and stick up for what YOU believe in. She needs a reality checK:]
