Question Posted Tuesday April 10 2007, 6:14 pm

Okay.. Please don't be like "HOLY COW SHES FAT" cause I know thatlol. I'm 14 years old and I weigh about 210lbs. I have a boyfriend who loves me and thinks im beautiful, and lots of friends, but im not comfortable with how I look. I really want to do this for ME. Does anyone have any good advice, diets, or good [low cal] snack foods that would help?? I'd REALLY appreicate it. I am going to try to get down to 120-130 over all [i know, alot]. But for now my goal is 160-170 by the end of July.. I'm pretty sure thats possible, but im going to need helplol. Also, its kinda hard cause I work in my school cafe and get a free lunch ever day.. Tips please?? THANKS!!

I'm in about the same position! I'm 19/F and about 210ish (I think). University has wreaked havoc on my weight, so I'm going to try to lose a bunch of it this summer.

First of all, make sure you're setting a reasonable goal. Just because they might SAY that a 5'1 girl should be 120-130 pounds doesn't mean she should, necessarily. Make sure that your build agrees with your goal.

I'm using a weight tracking website, and it's really awesome. You sign up for an account, and give them a weight goal. They have a food tracker, where you can enter everything you eat, and a whole bunch of stuff.

My goal weight is 170 lbs (because I used to train in the martial arts, and that's my 'fighting shape'), and they recommended that I try to lose it by September. You can't lose too much weight too fast, or it's not healthy.

My only diet advice is to not eliminate the foods you like. Are you a chocoholic (like me)? Try having a bowl of fruit with a small chocolate bar. Ice cream fanatic? Have a half cup of ice cream topped with tons of berries. A little of what you love usually cuts cravings and keeps you from overeating.

One of my favourite low-cal snacks is fat-free cottage cheese with tinned peach slices. It's really tasty! Trail mix is another hit.

If you want a diet buddy, message me, because I'm really set on this goal too. It always helps to have someone to work with.

Good luck!

Okay, first off, you need to know it's a lot of commitment and work, EVERYDAY. So, if I were to go about doing something like this, I would make a plan, a list of things that I would feel comfortable doing.

Let's start with food. While you may go for a bag of chips or even a piece of pizza, it's so easy to supplement these with healthy snacks. It's really a mindset. For example here is a list of replacement foods:

Trail mix (may sound gross, but I personally can't stop eating it)
Low fat yogurt (mixed with granola and fruits is great)
Frozen yogurt (instead of ice cream)
Grapefruit (as well as other fruits such as oranges, apples, mangos, passionfruit, avocado etc)
Muffins, whole grain crackers, rice cakes (peanut butter is great with rice cakes)
Baked tortilla chips, with salsa are great just like pretzels
Switch from regular white bread to whole wheat
Cancel out soda and stick to juices, milk, water

**Limit yourself, don't say oh just one piece of a chocolate bar and I'll put it away, because chances are, you won't. You will tell yourself, just this once, it's not like it will make a difference, and this will continue, before you know it you've gained more than you've lost.

As for exercising, running is the absolute best way to lose weight, and it's free. If you're not up to date with your endurance, consider walking for about two weeks about 5 km (3 miles), then start jogging progressively from 1.6 km (1 m) - 4 km (2.5 m). Try doing this everyday or every other day. Find a buddy to run or walk with you, this will motivate you much more.

If you find this too strenuous, try swimming. Again make this progressive, start out small at about 15-20 minutes everyday or every other day for about 30 minutes.

Indoor activities such as static stretches (stay in one spot) etc can be good in between every morning when you wake up type things. However, push ups, sit ups and pull ups do not help you lose weight, they simply add muscle which is heavier than fat, over your fat and make you look bigger.

I hope this helped ;)
Have fun, and good luck!

First off, congratulations & wanting to do this for YOU & no one else. It takes a lot to recognize it, and then do something about it. So good job on that.

DO's
- Eat healthy. Fruits, veggies & meats are essential.
- Drink 8 glasses of milk a day and eat yogurt [preferably Yoplait Light & Fit]. If you're lactose intolerant like me, then eat dairy sparingly so you don't get sick.
- Drink 4 glasses of water a day.
- Cut junk food out. No more desserts, no more munchies, no more candy, no more soda & no more fast food. If you're gonna eat it, make sure you eat only a small portion & make sure you don't go completely overboard with it.
- Run alot. I'm not saying to run a mile in a day, but work your way up to it. Once you can run a mile, trying going for 2, then when you conquer 2, try 3 and so on. Don't run fast though, because you'll get tired & give up. Pace yourself.
- Join a gym. They have machines that target certain areas of the body, and if you ask a trainer, they should be able to help you out. [And if you don't wanna go alone, invite a friend along, or bring your ipod & listen to music. It'll make the time go by faster.]

DONT's
- Don't eat or exercise before bed. If you eat before bed, it's gonna be really hard to digest while sleeping since basically your whole body shuts down, and you'll just gain weight. And if you exercise before bed, your muscles won't be relaxed, so you'll be antsy & it'll be hard to fall asleep.
- When you see results, DO NOT STOP. Keep going because if you stop right then, you'll just gain all your weight back. So once this healthy lifestyle starts to suit you, don't give it up at all. For the rest of your life, because if you do everything you've worked for will just have been a big waste of time.
- Don't be discouraged if you gain weight. Muscle weighs more than fat. =)

If none of that works for you, then ask Mike.

Have no fear!

1st- BE CONFIDENT; stop worrying about how you look; it's great you wanna loose weight but 1st you have to be really confident you can do it.

2nd- Eat fruit as much as possible, same with veggies. [ i like fruit a lot more plus it helps you feel good ]

3rd- Exercise. Do some cardio workouts 2-5 times a week. or everyday. but don't over do it!

4th- Instead of coming home and eating a candy bar or opening up chips eat a sandwhich with protien!

5th- While your watching tv or on the computer every 10-15 minutes get up and just run in place...

6th- walk every saturday. try the early morning walk, walk up and down your street for like 30 minutes. Come home and relax and eat an apple.

7th- try cutting down on the portion size. Don't starve yourself but eat 3 meals. Oatmeal [my like favorite breakfast food] , Cereal, Nutrition Bars for breakfast. Lunch have a nice ham, turkey, sandwhich [subway's a good idea you can pick it up a day or 2 earlier and keep it in the fridge (if it's deli) and eat that for lunch. For dinner have vegetables, fruit, noodles [some sort of pasta], meat, and water or milk!

Mainly just eat healthy cut down a little on the portion size, exercise as much as possible with out over doing it, and just trust that you can loose the weight!

hope this helped
-stephanie

In my opinion, you should ask MikeCFT if he doesn't answer you here. CFT stands for Certified Fitness Trainer, and he knows his stuff.
