Yes, yes it does. But how many and at what rate really depends on what you're singing (and how you sing it).

I'm an Operatic Soprano, and let me tell you...

This stuff isn't for kids, Lol.

Classical singing especially the rehearsal portion of it, can leave you pretty winded. Because it's all in the breath and muscle control, right?

Of course, the same applies to all kinds of singing. As long as you are using proper technique (and you'll know, because you'll feel it) you will burn some calories. Of course, not that many or anything. If you really want to bump it up, get that body moving while you sing.

Now THAT stuff will get you into shape. ( I do a lot of musical theatre as well...can you tell?)

And PS, I don't know if this will help you or anyone out there, but I've done the math, and one hour of intense rehearsal can get you 2 points in the weight watchers program. This is around the same caliber as an hour of walking briskly. But as I said, it has to be the kind of singing that leaves you slightly winded. Don't try it out on your own if you haven't received some training in it, I don't want anyone here hurting themselves!!

Yes you do! It is really interesting. Another way to lose a lot of calories is just by laughing. If you laugh for I think 3 minutes straight, it is the equvilant to running a mile!

Hope i helped, and this is a cool question! =]

as weird as this sounds, you actually can!
by contracting and pulling in your stomach muscles and expecially those high notes, burns fat! crazy, i know, but it workes.

Everything you do burns calories.
Hell, Breathing burns them. How many calories singing burns depends on how loud you sing, how fast, your pitch range, and if your really into it.
for example, if you sing "Mary had a little lamb" at a normal pitch range, somewhat quietly, and moderately slow while just sitting on a stool, its obviously not going to do MUCH.
but if you were to do something like AC/DC and be all into it, singing fast, moving around and loudly, you'll burn a lot more.

but like I said, It really won't have a significant effect on any kind of dieting or fitness scale.

Ehh... singing isn't really an exercise but you can burn a couple of calories doin' it. Not many to make a HUGE difference but it contributes to results. It depends how long you were singing for... I would guess maybe 30-60 calories for a couple of hours? Depends if you're dancing too. An hour of dancing with it would maybe burn 250-350; so if you're looking to lose weight by singing alone... good luck. You may not be so successful. But dancing will help!
