Question Posted Saturday February 17 2007, 7:40 pm
So my cat won't eat her wetfood. She eats her dry food perfectly fine, and I have tried every suggestion my Vet told me, but nothing worked. Yet I heard (from a friend) that if cats don't eat their wetfood they'll die or something? I do find it somewhat ridiculous but it worries me. Is that true? If so, what can I do? If not, any suggestions to help my cat eat her food?
Additional info, added Saturday February 17 2007, 7:43 pm: My vet recommended starving my cat for a day, then mixing the food with dry food, and I tried using the paste-like food, but none of those worked. I tried EVERY single brand of food, but she just licks it and kicks her bowl around. Sorry to not mention this but hopefully you can still help me!. turn-n-burn answered Wednesday March 14 2007, 1:23 pm: Well she may just prefer the dry food. She may not like wet food. I have one cat that refuses to eat it so there is no need to force her too. Its like us loving potatoe chips but hating spinache for say. But I have seen several cats that just like dry food! [ turn-n-burn's advice column | Ask turn-n-burn A Question ]
brokenheart456 answered Monday February 26 2007, 4:29 pm: THERE IS NO WAY A CAT CAN DIE FROM NOT EATING WET FOOD. as long as your cat has plenty of clean, fresh water available all the time it should be fine. my friend's cat hardly ever gets wet food....only as a treat....and as far as i know its perfectly happy (and attacks everyoen but my friend's mom!) so don't worry about that!
of course...if your vet says its important that it eats wet food....ahve you tried each flavor of each brand? sometimes cats like, for example, plain tuna flavor but not tuna and salmon flavor. (yes i know weird, but it is true)
so if your cat absolutely refuses to eat anything but dry food, it still should lead a good healthy life if he/she was in good health to begin with. [ brokenheart456's advice column | Ask brokenheart456 A Question ]

basketcase_x08 answered Tuesday February 20 2007, 8:12 pm: Ok. either your friend is Psycho or extremely gullible. Wet food is not essential to your cat's diet. Usually wet food is just something extra, something different tasting, like a treat almost.
Its possible that your pet just doesn't like the texture of the food. Judging by the fact that your cat eats dry food fine, then I'd say that She just doesn't like the texture of the food. I wouldn't worry about it. Cats are by nature extremely picky eaters.
orphans answered Tuesday February 20 2007, 12:12 pm: sounds like your cat just doesnt like the taste of we food, like how we dont like some food. maybe you could mix wet and dry food together. gradually put more and more wet food in and it might start to like it. hope i helped, and good luck with 'em [ orphans's advice column | Ask orphans A Question ]
mmm_Candy123 answered Sunday February 18 2007, 12:26 am: no it doesnt mean your cat is dying. One of my cats doesnt eat wet food either and she's fine. Have you tried maybe mixing in and the slowly putting less dry food in the wet food so the cat might get used to the texture and feel and eat it? im pretty sure that could help. Sabine answered Saturday February 17 2007, 9:49 pm: Did your vet say your cat needed wet food? Usually they say not to give cats wet food. There are two reasons. The first is that it's high in fat and the second is that it sticks in their teeth and causes decay and tartar build-up. My cats have all eaten only dry food because it's alledgedly better for them. I've been a cat owner for over 20 years and never have I had a vet tell me that a cat needs canned food.
If you think she needs wet food, here's an idea. Soak the dry food with some water or canned broth. It will puff up. Then you can mash it with a fork. That's what I've done with kittens.
Honestly, though, I think I'd listen to the cat on this one.
vomski10 answered Saturday February 17 2007, 9:30 pm: k well your cat won't die. some just don't like it. but yes the mixing of wet and dry usually does work and you have to do it for a while then just seperate the dry and wet. also, it could be the flavor of the food. my cat will only eat Whiska's wet food that doesn't have fish in it. so that may be it. but if she doesn't eat it, she will be fine, just make sure she drinks lots of water =) [ vomski10's advice column | Ask vomski10 A Question ]
karenR answered Saturday February 17 2007, 9:27 pm: None of the cats I know will eat canned cat food. They all eat dry food just fine and are all perfectly happy. So I don't really know why you want it to eat wet food, but it isn't going to die if it
doesn't. :) [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]
