Weed is illegal because its a weed that the government cant tax and the rest is pretty bad and it would seem stupid to band one drug and not them all so

Hey. Drugs are worse than alchahol(sp) becuase drugs can like mess up the whole inside of your body, what with your lungs and stuff. Also, there's some theory that like every cigarette you smoke takes 20 minutes off your life. And, alchahol can deffinatly make you addicted to it, but it takes a lot longer to die of alchahol than drugs, unless of course you get alchahol poisoning. And, just listen, I've seen people that don't think drugs are that bad, then they try it and get addicted. I know, I know, everyone tells everyone drugs are bad, but I've seen some pretty bad drug addicts before, and it's not..just no. Don't try them, I'm warning you, they're really really bad.

Alcohol isn't illegal because when they tried to ban it in the 1920's, drinking rates went up.

Marijuana and weed are the same thing. They make people act dumb. Eventually people don't want to do anything except smoke, they stop caring about school and things like that. The effects of weed and alcohol are very different. Weed kills brain cells and can give you cancer, and it also makes people screw up in high school, which makes it nearly impossible to go to college.

I'm not neccessarily against it, it's just not a great idea if you want a future.

The person who said that marijuana is better for you than tobacco has no idea what they are talking about. Smoking one joint is the equivalent of smoking 5 cigarettes. I thought I should correct that.

What a load of balloney in some of those answers. Alcohol destroys your brain cells, weed does not. Both the impaired reasoning ability and memory that is experience with weed returns once you have stopped smoking it. Alcohol on the other hand does real damage.

Cigarettes are more addictive than weed and very likely more dangerous to your health (EDIT in reference to the genius above me: and you smoke a hell of a lot more of them than you do weed... well beyond 5 to 1, even if one uses this very dubious statistic).

There is absolutely, no good reason as to why tobacco and alcohol are legal while weed isnt. In NO way am I saying that weed is harmless, it is not, but compared to these mainstream drugs it is not any worse.

You cannot generalise and talk of "drugs". They have so many different effects and risks that it is impossible to group them like this. Some are halucinogens, some just make you feel relaxed (like weed), some give you energy (like speed)... similarly if you OD, some will kill you, some may make you nuts, and some wont have much effect.

So while I can tell you with certainty that all these drugs (from alcohol to heroin) are bad for you in some way, each will expose you to a different set of risks.

What you can be sure of is that the risks associated with alcoholism are totally on par with the worst of the drug junkies. Alcohol plays a part in damaging virtually every organ in your body to a lesser or greater degree. It is associated with heart problems, liver problems, stomach problems, increased risk of some cancers, strokes etc. Someone wrote "drugs damage your liver" below. Alcohol is the great liver killer here make no mistake.

The fact of the matter is that laws do not always make sense. Popular opinion matters far more than facts in this case (as one could see when prohibition of alcohol was attempted in the early 20th century).

Whether or not all should be illegal, or all legal, or whether there should be some middle road is debateble. Personally I think drug legalisation would create a huge improvement to the current situation. But that is a whole different discussion.

However, to conclude, you are prefectly right in spotting an inconsistency in the law. There is no good reason why things are the way they are.

Drugs dont only make you high, they affect how your body works aswell. For Example if you were to take some coccain, you would get a "buzz"that would only last for about 4 hours then you would want some more to get that "buzz" again. The reason why you get that "buzz" is because of the way it effects your brain, it makes you feel relaxed and forget about all of your worries but there is a catch, Which is killing you off. The more of it you take, the more you get addicted to it, the more you get addicted to it, the more work it takes to get you unhooked and if you dont get unhooked quick enough it starts to damage your health, life and everything around you. Also, alchohol doesn't make you high, all it does if you drink too much is make you drunk which wares off after a while but gives you what you call a hangover the next morning but it can still damage your health a bit. I know this advice might seem a bit boring but it should explain your question :)

There is no difference. Marijuana is actually healthier than tobacco, and it's much less likely to cause cancer. The reason it is illegal in most countries is because it's thought to be a "gateway drug", leading to use of other illicit drugs that *are* harmful. There's evidence supporting the theory of it being a gateway drug, and there's evidence contradicting it. In my opinion the reason it's a gateway drug is because it's illegal, and so the same people that sell it sell other drugs. There has never been a death from using marijuana, and it's perfectly safe to use. Just avoid doing anything potentially dangerous, like driving.

I agree with the below user, drugs not only kill your brain, they kill your liver [the filtration of your blood.] and stuff like chewing tobacco gives you mouth and gum cancer. Cigarettes give you lung cancer.

check out this site: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

marijuana gives you a "cough, frequent respiratory infections; impaired memory and learning; increased heart rate, anxiety; panic attacks; tolerance, addiction"

PCP gives you a lack of appetite [and people wonder why/how nicole richie got so skinny?] and depression. Which, eventually, could lead to you dying of malnutrition or starving.

LSD gives you ian ncreased body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure; loss of appetite, sleeplessness, numbness, weakness, tremors

Marijuana destroies your brain. Alcohon when consumed responsibly doesn t. If someone drinks 10 bottles of whisky then of course he can say that alcohol is just as bad as weed.
Also most types of marijuana are chemically messed up, therefore various types of weed are not as innocent as they seem. They also happen to be highly addictive even though many people claime otherwise.
Weed smokers tend to forget all the time. Not when they are high but generally..forget about everything.
Weed smoking is commonly to come with lack of motivation, weed smokers dont set hight targets and goals in their life, they only care about making enough money to get high. No clubbing, no fun, no partying just videogames.
If someone likes to do drugs of course, he is not harming anyone but chances are he will affect other people too. Nowdays people smoke so much weed it is considered really common to do so, people talk freely about it, people light up one without asking wether someone has a problem...Well, it is not a normal thing to do.
Alcohol is nice to drink. A cocktail with some umbrellas on, people can enjoy a glass of wine with their food, or a beer with their stake. You dont consume alcohol to get drunk. When you smoke weed, you do it cause you wanna get high.
When the body becomes used to the substance, it needs more or a different type. Wich means that if you smoke weed, a time will come when smoking weed will have no effect unless you smoke more. And so on and so on so in the end if you wanna get high you end up with a needle full of crack in your eye.
Have the disciplence not to give in in the first place. You dont know how it feels like to be addicted to something, I dont know either but I am not going to find out.
Control yourself.
